16 Working with China» UK reaches China via GÉANT (ORIENTplus, in addition to commercial links with China Telecom and China Unicom» Researchers are content with using the IP service for connectivity therefore minimal requests for point to point connectivity with Chinese Institutions» Total traffic Jisc exchange with CERNET and Chinese ISPs is ~3.5 Gbps, CERNET traffic is about one third» Concern from UK institutions about the potential impact of new Chinese government policy on VPNs in China e.g. access to content on VLE s hosted overseas for teaching and learning 08 November 2017 Jisc s global reach 16

17 Working with CERNET» Janet historic direct peering link with CERNET in late 1990 s. Link replaced by ORIENT and ORIENTplus since 2005» Jisc collaboration with CERNET to support TNE in China, mainly troubleshooting connectivity issues for users in China and the UK» A Strategic Alliance between CERNET and Jisc was established in 2013 initially to support TNE.
