SANReN Current and Future Developments 28 March 2013 Presented by: Leon Staphorst Inputs from: Colin Wright, Christiaan Kuun
Overview 1. Introduction 2. Current Status 3. SANReN National Backbone 4. Metro Rings 5. Phase 2 Remote Site Connectivity 6. Additional Build Activities 7. TENET & NICI 8. Value Added Services 9. SAGrid: a SANReN Service & its achievements 10.SANReN and Science 11.Future Commitments 12.SANReN and WACS 13.Questions and Comments
Introduction (1) Original SANReN objectives: Establish a high bandwidth research network for the South African research community with international links to global research networks; Provide a platform for research in high speed networking; and Enable accelerated Human Capital Development through the network s use. Benefits to be delivered by SANReN: Maximum accessibility and bandwidth to research and higher educational institutions; Support national science projects; Global/International connectivity; Create platforms to enable SA researchers to participate in international collaborations; Other value added services.
Introduction (2) To date, 139 sites connected Operated by TENET When completed SANReN network will provide world-class connectivity to > users (students, academics and researchers) SANReN connects existing (.. and future..) computing and data infrastructure
Current PhaseStatus II Backbone Rollout
SANReN National Backbone
Metro Rings JHB Tshwane Ethekwini Cape Town
Phase II Remote Site Connectivity Province or general area SANReN links required between/among the following sites: Eastern Cape Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, Bisho, Alice, East London, Butterworth and Mthatha Free State Bloemfontein, Kimberly, Welkom and Potchefstroom Limpopo Pretoria, Polokwane, Makhado and Turfloop (Mankweng) Mpumalanga Pretoria, Emalahleni, Middleberg and Nelspruit North West Johannesburg, Vanderbijlpark and Potchefstroom North West (Mafikeng) Rustenburg, Mafikeng and Potchefstroom Pietermaritzberg Durban and Pietermaritzburg
Additional Build Activities Besides backbone extensions, additional sub-projects include: Dark fibre builds: ARC Onderstepoort, ARC Infruitec, ARC IAE; Council for Higher Education (CHE); South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Space Operations at Waterkloof air force base Wireless network to Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) Collaboration with Tshwane University of Technology to connect residences to Tshwane metro ring PoP establishment Makhado to terminate backbone extensions as well as future international cross-border network connections Normal site change requests (e.g. CPUT Thomas Patullo) Participation in DHET funded, HESA managed, RCCP project Implementation of these takes a significant amount of time, and substantial project management time & effort from the SANReN team.
TENET & NICI TENET Regular meetings with TENET to deliberate on operational issues, to carefully plan network deployment and for joint planning activities The SANReN team spends significant amounts of time ensuring that there is synergy between the teams, and that no duplication of work takes place Collaboration agreement: work in progress Present SANReN / TENET contract runs until end March 2013 TENET has to be able to sign long term service level contracts with institutions National Integrated Cyber-Infrastructure Working Group Ministerial NICI Working Group
Value Added Services SANReN Services eduroam perfsonar Federated Identity Management (urgent) SAGrid SANReN CSIRT Light Paths Hosting of AdobeConnect server TENET services Accounting and provisioning Call Centre Mirror sites: e.g. Sourceforge, Video conferencing server hosting
SAGrid as a SANReN Service International collaborations and projects: EGI, CHAIN, CHAIN-RED, EPIKH Computing on distributed devices Virtual Research Environments (Science Sensors Gateways) Network (e.g. SANReN) Grid (e.g. SAGrid) Devices Authentication: FID Communities University Infrastructure
SAGrid Achievements CERN LHC - CHPC Training o SAAO (Application porting) o EPIKH School (Stellenbosch) o Technical Tuesday (Monthly video conference) o EPIKH Exchange (UCT, Meraka, SAAO, SANReN) o Tunisia (training) Bioinformatics at UP and UCT Core Message: Continue to invest in integrated scientific infrastructure o Ensure that funding is allocated towards integration o University infrastructure is a fundamental part of this eco-system Part of the Muon-Muon analysis for ATLAS was done at UJ and Wits, and played a small part in yesterday s announcement
SANReN and Science SANReN (and SA-Grid) provides support to: o MeerKAT, SALT (Connectivity) o (MeerKAT + ) SKA (Connectivity, planning) o SANAE/SANAP (Connectivity, contracting) o HartRAO e-vlbi (2Gbps light path) o CERN / CHPC / Universities (SA-Grid assist) o Africa-VLBI (Planning, more when required)
Future Commitments (1) Complete installation, commissioning, refining of SANReN backbone & extensions Network extensions to pick up qualifying sites still not connected or reached via the backbone extensions: e.g. smaller-metro rings in East-London, Pietermaritzburg, and Port Elizabeth, connect sites e.g. TUT Garankuwa, Medunsa, HMO (Hermanus Magnetic Observatory) Feasibility study and potential procurement of national dark-fibre network Where feasible, assist Higher Education and Research Institutions with advice, guidance and oversight in the rollout of their self-funded WANs, e.g. UNISA mobile project Possible connectivity to Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges
Future Commitments (2) Continue service development: development of eduroam; implementation of national federated identity (FID) management framework; establish SANReN computer security incident response team (CSIRT); Science DMZs Procure and implement redundant international capacity (WACS) Achieve connectivity to SADC and the rest of Africa, working with international projects (e.g. AfricaConnect) Support special projects of national significance, e.g. SKA and MeerKAT sites, SALT telescope, evlbi experiments, high energy physics CERN project; Support development of NICI - Work together with the DST and various stakeholders in unifying the goals, objectives and structure of the SANReN/TENET relationship
SANReN and WACS Why do we need WACS? 1. HEIs, Science Councils, SAWS, etc. 10Gbps to 100 Gbps in 5 yrs 2. National Science Projects 10Gbps to 100 Gbps in 5 yrs 3. SKA National Science Projects will not succeed without WACS Light paths (dedicated end-to-end circuits) are required for science Sufficient capacity needed (SEACOM will run out), redundancy, upgrade path; operate WACS & SEACOM synergistically Present redundancy unsatisfactory & costly
