DLR.de Folie 17 Project Schedule (5 stages) 1. initial preparation and setup 2. integration of the pilot activities and development and setup of the catalogue tools, including data discovery and QoS 3. consolidation and operationalisation of system and pilots 4. consolidation and operationalisation of the system pilots and evolution, with successive interactions between the system and users 5. wrap up and consolidation of the assessments on the system
DLR.de Folie 18 Open Data Policy GEO recognizes that the societal benefits arising from Earth observations can only be fully achieved through the sharing of data, information, knowledge, products and services. GEO now aims to implement the following GEOSS Data Sharing Principles: data, metadata and products will be shared as Open Data by default, by making them available as part of the GEOSS Data Collection of Open Resources for Everyone (Data-CORE) without charge or restrictions on reuse, subject to the conditions of registration and attribution when the data are reused; where international instruments, national policies or legislation preclude the sharing of data as Open Data, data should be made available with minimal restrictions on use and at no more than the cost of reproduction and distribution; and all shared data, products and metadata will be made available with minimum time delay. NextGEOSS focus: Promote Open Data Policy towards member countries of GEOSS as key aspect for success of GEOSS Promote GEOSS as initiative towards external communities Support better and large scale practical utilization of GEOSS Open data through practical exercise - Hackathons
DLR.de Folie 19 Public Outreach: Project Summit The main NextGEOSS public events will be the four project Summits (WMO, Geneva): 1 st Summit: Engagement of communities, such as data providers, other GEO projects, ongoing European projects (FP7, H2020, etc.) and relevant institutions. Speakers from these institutions will be invited to attend and speak at the event, and a Round Table will be devoted to identifying potential collaboration activities. 2 nd Summit will re-inforce the engagement of communities, and will also report on the status of the project s activities and collaborations with external projects and institutions. 3 rd Summit will be to assess and report publicly on the project developments, and showcasing a selection of the most advanced pilot activities as examples of the NextGEOSS system. 4 th Summit, will be the final NextGEOSS showcase, and will demonstrate the full system, including pilots and collaboration activities. A final open discussion will conclude the event, focussing on the project follow-up activities and sustainability issues, as well as promoting collaborations post-nextgeoss.
DLR.de Folie 20 Innovative + Business Research Pilots
DLR.de Folie 21 Innovative Research Pilots: Time Series Analysis for Agricultural Monitoring Precursors: OGC Web Services standards development + research activities (FP-7 GeoViQua, OGC TestBed-11, TestBed-12) Objectives of Research Pilot: Powerful tools to visualize large time series of global EO-data and derived vegetation products (bio-geophysical parameters) as derived from Copernicus Global Land Service + Tools to unlock and visualize heterogenous in-situ data. Use case does not only focus Web-based solutions but also machine-tomachine interfaces. SBA: Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture + Biodiversity and Ecosystems Sustainability
DLR.de Folie 22 Innovative Research Pilot: Biodiversity Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) are proposed as a layer between biodiversity observation and biodiversity indicators used in policy. There is a need for remote sensing for EBVs to fill the spatial and temporal gaps between in situ observation data in order to build up a global framework for monitoring biodiversity (Pettorelli, 2016). Next GEOSS aim: Integration of high resolution RS-EBVs will be demonstrated for forest and heathland habitats.
DLR.de Folie 23 Innovative Research Pilot: Space and Security Pilot will be built on the results of the activities currently performed by SatCen in the framework of two Horizon 2020 projects: BigDataEurope (Integrating Big Data, Software & Communities for Addressing Europe s Societal Challenges) and EVER-EST (European Virtual Environment for Research - Earth Science Themes). SatCen is a key institution linking Space and Security as well as the GEO Participating Organisation leading the GEO Space and Security Community Activity (CA-23). Next GEOSS aims: provide tools for detecting and characterizing changes explore methods for extracting information on changes at different scales foster extensive exploitation of GEOSS Data Hub
DLR.de Folie 24 Innovative Research Pilot: Cold Regions GEO Cold Regions coordinates global efforts to provide Earth Observation (EO) products and services to science, decision- and policy-makers with a vested interest in the cryosphere (in particular) and the environment (in general) of polar regions and mountain areas around the world. The NextGEOSS Cold Regions Pilot will focus on three areas: (1) the Arctic/Svalbard region, (2) Antarctica, and (3) the Himalayan glaciers, and will address the existing shortage in accessing in situ data in GEOSS. We will liaise with ongoing initiatives such as SIOS, GEO-CRI, WMO GCW, as well as national programs in Antarctica. Next GEOSS aims: The focus of the pilot will be on linking together data available in near-real-time (NRT, with up to 1 day delay from measurement, and a target of 1 hour delay) from the targeted regions, including the atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial domains, and make them available in the NextGEOSS Data Hub and the Global Cold Regions Community Portal.
DLR.de Folie 25 Innovative Research Pilot: Air Pollution, Urban Growth+Health Risks in Megacities Since 2007 for the first time in human history more people have lived in cities than in the countryside. According to the United Nations in 2050, around 75% of the worldwide population will be living in cities. The population density, traffic and infrastructure, environmental and energy problems, climate change, migration, demographic change, aspects of vulnerability and sustainability, new forms of mobility and sharing - unprecedented challenges and opportunities are continuously arising. Next GEOSS will apply a globally systematic multi-sensor approach combining atmosphere and land data to analyze air pollution variability in megacities and urban agglomerations linked to urban growth rates and population development. Development and impact of the megacities and urban agglomerations will be analyzed and classified according to the requirements of the Societal Benefit Areas Health and Urban Development. In cooperation with health experts spatio-temporal correlations between health data and air pollution will be discussed and a proposal for health risk indicators will be derived using the NextGEOSS infrastructure.
DLR.de Folie 26 Business Research Pilots High Resolution Mapping for Territorial Planning Crop Monitoring supporting Food Security Smart Cities: Cities need metrics to measure their performance. The ISO international standards organization is developing a series of standards to support sustainable development and resilience in cities. Energy: These following two use-cases contribute to the strategic objectives of GEO advocate, engage and deliver (as proposed in the GEO Strategic plan , Implementing GEOSS): Constructing gridded data for grid operators High Resolution Solar Mapping at Urban Scale
