2 IT IN POWER Mission Power utilities are increasingly making use of IT for more informed decision-making and greater efficiency in operations. IT is also at the core of initiatives aimed at lowering network losses and automating energy monitoring processes. The achievements of the early adopters of IT are encouraging others to introduce similar systems in their operations. ERP and SCADA are among the popular IT-based systems being deployed for control and monitoring. Utilities with basic IT systems in place are in the process of setting up advanced systems such as DMS and OMS. Projects are also under way to introduce smart grid technologies such as WAMS in transmission and AMI in distribution. Meanwhile, generation companies are seeking IT solutions for plant diagnostics, project execution and asset management. There are lessons to be learnt from the recent IT implementation experience. Organisational transition is proving to be the critical success factor. There needs to be a right balance between in-house and outsourcing modes of deployment so that utilities can take advantage of both their own functional knowledge and vendors' IT competence. There is a high degree of customisation needed in IT applications, which can be costly and complex. Some utilities are taking advantage of open source architecture for flexibility in expansion and technology integration. With a growing need for real-time data, communication technologies are becoming more important. Experience shows that there is no single technology or solution for meeting all the communication needs of a utility. A mix and match approach is needed. The technology choice has to also address cyber security concerns in cases where network data is being accessed through shared public infrastructure. The mission of this conference is to highlight the emerging IT-related needs and requirements of power utilities and to discuss the appropriate strategies and solutions.
