Fostering the Digital Continuity in railway infrastructure Life Cycle Standardization in Railway Network modeling and data exchange Alain Jeanmaire SNCF Réseau RTM-railML Work Group
Railway business is facing a challenge, - in terms of competition with other means of transportation Powered by IMs and Manufacturers Shuttle-to-Train transfer Hyperloop Hydrogen Hydrail Powered by COMPETITORS Powered by CUSTOMERS - and with its global efficiency, first of all in the domain of network infrastructure
The transformation in railways infrastructure will come from technologies, but also and mainly from our capacity to organize an efficient collaboration along the whole value chain. Construction Operation Design Catenary Civil Eng. Project Mngr Client Operator Signaling Track Economist GIS Geologist Maintainer Requirements Maintenance One major leverage for efficiency in collaboration, is to implement Digital continuity all along the infrastructure life cycle and operation. (Common information shared by all contributors to a process)
Digital continuity for Infrastructure Life Cycle and Operation One significant initiative for such continuity in Business Processes is certainly the BIM Level3 ambition. The BIM Maturity Model by Mark Bew and Mervyn Richards adapted to reflect BLM s relationship to Level 3 A fully integrated and collaborative process enabled by «web services» and compliant with emerging Industry Foundation Class (IFC) standards? This level of BIM will utilize 4D construction sequencing, 5D cost information and 6D project lifecycle management information; (source /bim\glossary/level \of\maturity)
Railway system is complex Infrastructure lifecycle and operation involve heterogeneous technologies, cultures and languages Railway infrastructure combines two major value chains: Development (Design and Construction) and Exploitation (Operation and Maintenance), two different worlds, each with its own specificities. Railway Infrastructure has a major complexity: territorial network, i.e. wide interlinked infrastructures The result of those specificities can be imaged by historical differences between two main operational chains of IMs : Traffic Management and Network Maintenance. One same network and one shared objective: availability, but two different languages Traffic Management Maintenance Routes & Capacity Works Technologies & Assets Network topology Remarkable Points, Schematic, Installations, Linear referencing, Geography, A major key success factor for collaboration in railway is about sharing a common language between all partners along the whole life cycle
A common language for railway life cycle and operation Implementing Digital Continuity in railway infrastructure requires a shared language covering multiple technologies and dimensions: Functional design, topology, geometry, geography, linear referencing, physical assets, project phases and time One solution to this complex requirement is being provided from two separate initiatives for standardization IFC rail A standard model and exchange format for design and construction A standard model and exchange format for functional description and operation
Enable Digital continuity for Rail Operation RailTopoModel : a railway project, powered by UIC and supported by 15+ IMs and Manufacturers. A standard model to share a common functional description of railway system, and support operational processes between partners. RailTopoModel is a UML object model, independent of any specific usage, designed to be the foundation for the virtualization of a railway system, its design, life cycle, and operation. RTM foundation includes structuring specificities for railway : network multilevel topology (track, line, ), localization and referencing (linear, geography, ), punctual, linear and aerial objects and properties, time an events dimensions, Selection of Members from Railways (IM/RU)
Enable Digital continuity for Rail Operation railml : an XML-based exchange format for railway railml (Railway Markup Language) uses XML systematic for the description of rail-specific data and includes other standard XML-schemes, such as MathML and GML, when relevant railml is driven by the demand of whole railway sector (IM, RU, Authorities, Industry) railml is developed within a partnership of independent companies and organizations (railways, universities, industries,..) railml is mainly used for the projects of railway companies and manufacturers, software and consulting firms Currently the following sub schemes are available (railml version 2.3): Infrastructure, for the description of tracks Rolling stock, for the description of vehicles Timetable, for the description of timetables Interlocking, for the description of signaling and routes (version 3) railml version 3.1, based on RailTopoModel, will be published as beta by Summer 2017 Infrastructure Rolling Stock Timetable Interlocking*
Some use cases (not exhaustive) railvivid : Generic viewer for railml files Open source (EUPL) software to check file quality and view data (network geography, objects and properties; Timetable charts; Rolling stock description and properties, ) RINF: Register of Infrastructure for all EU member states (+ Switzerland & Norway) XML data Format to support all data required by RINF and provides the translator to feed the RINF specific format ETCS: Network description for balise setup XML data format to provide accurate topology, geometry and signalling information as required to determine ETCS balise positions Signalling: data preparation for signalling Modelling and file format for signalling-interlocking projects Software vendors: First (known) project from a software editor to develop a solution based on RTM (Network resources and data management) Academics: Several studies/theses based on RailTopoModel (e.g. TU Dresden: Concept comparison IFC Rail/RTM; IFSTTAR: RailTopoModel for automated safety analysis: a first application to train route protection)
