5 ISFOC Brief Company profile ISFOC (Institute for Concentration Photovoltaic Systems) aims to promote the development of CPV technologies. The Projects developed by ISFOC come from the collaboration with third Parties (companies and universities), as well as other activities promoted by itself. Its activities are focused on: - Plants acceptance and power rating. - Legal Assessment. - Solar Resource Evaluation. - Technological Evaluation. - Training. - Engineering and design of power plants - Software development for control and monitoring - Labs & Tests. Its facilities located in Ciudad Real (Spain), with an area of 2500 m², have the following services available: - Indoor laboratories and Solar Simulator for CPV and PV technologies. - Outdoor laboratory for CPV and PV testing. - Physicochemical lab (climatic & UV chambers, hail launcher, rain test) - Testing field for prototypes (tracking systems, PV and CPV modules). - Control and Monitoring Center. 5

8 R&D: Laboratory Laboratory: ISFOC has installed a climatic laboratory to carry out all the IEC tests for validation purpose 8

9 R&D: Laboratory Aralab FITOCLIMA 8000EDTU40 climatic chamber has been tuned up to allow heavy devices to be placed into it. Aralab UV chamber with wave lengths between 280 and 400 nm., 8000 litres capacity and adjustable temperature range between ambient temperature and 65ºC. 9

22 Computer Engineering Services ISFOC has developed a new software application called GOCPV, which enables the centralization of all the information and data related to Concentration Photovoltaic (CPV) plants or Photovoltaic (PV) plants in a single system, for its study and analysis. The vast majority of CPV or PV suppliers provide a monitoring software together with their plants; but those systems are not specifically designed for carrying out detailed studies of plant performance. With GOCPV it is possible to carry out studies and comparisons of all the information received from the plant components (energy-meters, inverters, trackers, weather stations, etc.), regardeless of the plant technology and its location. Consequently, as all the information is integrated in the same system user can focus on the data analysis starting from the reports generated by the application. This is GOCPV application. It is a Web application. You only need Internet connection, neither software nor any other component are needed. 22

28 Cases studies and references New applications for CPV: A fast way to improve reliability and technology progress. Project Description Scope of Consultancy Service Provided CPV demo plants North-Africa. Project and Key Challenges: Join the two owners of the most developed CPV Technologies so that, as leaders, they carried out a research together for finding new applications of the CPV systems. Assure the components reliability in new sites beyond Europe. Improve the members Isofotón and Concentrix- Technologies, by accelerating the training curve that the CPV must follow in order to be competitive in the current markets and, that way, dramatically reduce the costs in no longer than 3 to 4 years time. Raise the progress of CPV in harder weather conditions. ISFOC Approach: Creation of a database of worldwide CPV experience with the dissemination of the results. Results and Benefits: In the framework of this project ISFOC has developed its management and information system GOCPV : a central database for collecting all the monitoring information of all the CPV plants in which ISFOC collaborates. 28

Project Description Scope of Consultancy Service Provided CPV demo plants in MASDAR Project and Key Challenges: ISFOC main goal in MASDAR is to hold a viability study over the Concentration Photovoltaic technology at Masdar City, in Abu Dhabi. This viability study is focused on the evaluation of different CPV Technologies from different manufacturers under extreme weather conditions. This viability study will be concluded by issuing a report stating if CPV technology fulfils all the requirements to be considered competitive and reliable in Abu Dhabi and surrounding regions. ISFOC Approach: ISFOC selected different technologies through an International Call for Proposal. ISFOC has supervised the design and construction of the CPV plants in Masdar City. ISFOC will follow the process to accept the plants once they will be finished, starting a process of analysis of the data of the CPV Plants. Results and Benefits: 6 different companies are working together to install a total of 590 kw: Emcore, Soitec, Magpower, Everphoton, Isofotón and Solfocus. 29
