Strategy Briefing: Success factors for managing hybrid IT MARCH 2017 COMMISSIONED BY

Executive Summary Enterprises are using multiple cloud and non-cloud environments for their applications and workloads. IT and business leaders are stepping up their efforts to find the optimal workload placement in an evolving hybrid IT environment. Hybrid IT is defined as the usage of multiple deployment models to deliver a single workload or application. The goal is getting applications and workloads to serve people across a heterogeneous environment. Hybrid IT can be deployed as a transition strategy to enable migration from one model to another with minimal disruption, or as a permanent architecture with individual elements of a solution residing in different venues. Given the highly dynamic nature of these environments, there is no one master playbook for hybrid IT. Decisions around deployment models will remain similarly dynamic and will initially involve trial and error based on individual application profiles and requirements. This report seeks to explore the current state of the market, as well as the key requirements and business drivers that are determining workload-placement decisions. METHODOLOGY The survey data used in this report was collected in January/February 2017 by 451 Research commissioned by Dimension Data using a combination of web- and phone-based surveys to query 1,503 large organisations in the US, Europe, Asia-Pacific (APAC) and South Africa, across a wide range of verticals, about the state of hybrid IT deployments including the use of cloud and non-cloud environments, customer preferences for managed and professional services, and the adoption of emerging technologies such as DevOps and SDN. 2

Key Findings End-user demands and constrained data centre space are two of the factors encouraging enterprises to shift workloads off-premises. Enterprises continue moving workloads to a variety of venues, such as public cloud, software as a service (SaaS) and hosted private cloud. Cloud models are seeing strong adoption across enterprises of all types, although enterprises will continue to have some workloads on-premises for at least the next two years. Most enterprises expect to use multiple clouds. That, along with the use of off-premises and on-premises non-clouds, adds complexity to infrastructure management. Cloud management is reported as one of the top three challenges in cloud deployment, and organisations use a variety of commercial and open source tools (e.g., performance management, automated resource balancing, DevOps) to deploy and manage a multi-cloud environment. Data migration is also a top challenge in cloud deployment, and nearly a quarter of respondents find application migration to be a manual, time-consuming process. Managed services have become a key component of service delivery across a range of infrastructure and application products. Service providers that can offer a comprehensive portfolio of managed services across the broadest set of infrastructure options are best positioned to meet the full set of enterprise cloud requirements. Cloud service providers are selected based on qualities such as (in descending order of importance) security capabilities, compliance with data security/privacy regulations, technical expertise and overall performance (with guaranteed SLAs). Enterprises are using innovative/emerging technologies such as containers, big-data solutions and software-defined networking (SDN) in production scenarios. Despite concerns about security, compliance and integration issues, organisations are embracing next-generation networking technologies such as SDN and network functions virtualisation (NFV) as part of their data centre and cloud strategies. 3

Hybrid IT is Becoming a Standard Enterprise Model Cloud (and cloud adoption) has been in the news for several years. However, cloud can refer to multiple things. Although there has been strong growth in the usage of public cloud services infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offered by firms such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, this public cloud service is one of several locations for enterprises to deploy workloads. Other options include using SaaS, hosted private cloud (similar to dedicated hosting) and on-premises private cloud, as well as traditional infrastructure ( non-cloud ) either in an enterprise-controlled data centre ( on-premises non-cloud ) or in a colocation facility ( off-premises noncloud ). 4

Why the interest in different approaches to infrastructure? We asked enterprise IT managers which events motivated them to consider using cloud. End-user demand for faster provisioning or new features was the most common event, with constrained data centre space, keeping up with peers and hardware refreshes also seen as key events (see Figure 1). The top events vary by country: Hong Kong, UK and US firms highlighted end-user demand most often, while respondents in France, Singapore and South Africa most often noted cost. Malaysian firms listed hiring challenges, and German firms mentioned limited data centre capacity as the most common motivating factors. Figure 1: Off-Premises Cloud Demand Drivers Q: What events would most motivate you to consider off-premises cloud (Hosted Private Cloud, Public Cloud/IaaS, SaaS) as a means of addressing the following issues? [select top three] (n=1503) End user demand for new features 43% End user demand for faster provisioning Data centre is out of capacity (space or power) 41% 43% To keep in step with industry peers/competitors Hardware refresh 36% 35% Application software upgrade project Requirement to reduce IT spending 30% 30% OS upgrade project 24% Hiring challenges/skills gaps 13% None of the above 1% These and other triggers have led to a steady movement of applications from on-premises non-cloud deployments to cloud. In our latest survey, respondents said they are running 24.4% of workloads on average in on-premises non-cloud environments today, but with the expectation that will decrease to 20.5% in two years (see Figure 2). On the other hand, cloud usage is widespread and growing on average, 62.8% of workloads are running in cloud today, and 67.5% of workloads are expected to run in cloud in two years. Figure 2: Application Distribution Current and In Two Years Q: Thinking of all the applications your organisation runs, approximately what percentage is running in each of the following cloud and non-cloud venues? And, what percentage do you expect to have in each venue in two years? (n=1503) 15.1% 14.5% 14.8% 18.4% 12.9% 24.4% 15.4% 15.3% 16.6% 20.2% 12.0% 20.5% Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)/Public Cloud Hosted Private Cloud On-Premises Private Cloud Off-Premises Non-Cloud On-Premises Non-Cloud Today In 2 Years 5

These rates differ by company size and by country. The use of non-cloud environments in South Africa is the highest. The use of SaaS, IaaS, hosted private cloud and on-premises private cloud are all expected to increase over the next two years. Only in South Africa is there a drop only for the use of hosted private cloud although this is offset by higher growth projections for on-premises private cloud and IaaS. Organisations in APAC are more inclined to use SaaS (18.1%) than those in other regions, but that is not expected to grow as much in APAC as the use of on-premises private cloud from 17% to 19.1% (see Figure 3). Figure 3: APAC Application Distribution Current and In Two Years Q: Thinking of all the applications your organisation runs, approximately what percentage is running in each of the following cloud and non-cloud venues? And, what percentage do you expect to have in each venue in two years? (n=500) 18.1% 18.3% 14.9% 15.5% 14.2% 16.0% 17.0% 19.1% 12.3% 11.0% 23.5% 20.0% Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)/Public Cloud Hosted Private Cloud On-Premises Private Cloud Off-Premises Non-Cloud On-Premises Non-Cloud Today In 2 Years The biggest change we saw overall is the reduction in the number of applications not running on any cloud (from 37.3% to 32.5%). Cloud models are seeing strong adoption across enterprises of all types (size/industry verticals) and countries in all regions, with enough deployment variability available in the market for individual firms to tailor their venue selections based on their own particular requirements. The deployment venue varies by application, with data analytics; web; and media as core workloads for IaaS (public cloud), while , unified collaboration and productivity; security; and networking as core workloads for on-premises private cloud. Hosted private cloud remains an alternative to public cloud for those wanting to be in full control of their cloud environments. 6

Figure 4: Individual Application Deployment Q: Describe your current usage of specific cloud types for the following workload categories using the following ratings: unchecked no usage, checked production usage. There are a variety of factors that inhibit the use of hosted infrastructure (see Figure 5), including security and compliance, cost of investment, and migration issues, with the most common issue varying by country. In South Africa, it is migration; in Australia, the UK and Hong Kong, it is a lack of skills. In Germany, India, Malaysia and the US, firms are still seeking the right partner. In France, the Netherlands and Belgium, there is a lack of demand, and in Singapore, complexity (management) is the most common inhibitor. These factors will likely keep certain workloads on-premises for at least the next several years, while others will be better suited to hosted private cloud or SaaS than IaaS. Thus, most enterprises are developing a hybrid approach to IT, where applications and workloads are deployed in different venues depending on requirements such as compliance with regulations, performance and proximity to the user. 7

Figure 5: Hosted IT Infrastructure Inhibitors Q: What is stopping you from using more hosted IT infrastructure? [Select top three] (n=1503) Security/compliance 55% Cost of investment 52% Migration issues Complexity of managing multiple IT environments 45% 50% Lack of skills 35% Governance/control 29% Lack of demand 26% Need to partner/ Can't find the right partner 7% Other 1% A hybrid approach today usually means having some applications or workloads off-premises and some on-premises or some in cloud and some not in cloud. However, eventually we believe hybrid will refer to a single business function that operates using multiple deployment venues, for example using data stored on-premises while calculations are carried out on a public cloud platform. This currently would require interoperable clouds and management capabilities. Most enterprises do not expect to use this approach in the next two years, with only 15.5% planning to use hybrid cloud. Another 29% plan to be able to migrate workloads or data between multiple clouds in two years, while 55.5% plan to either use a single cloud or multiple clouds that do not offer interoperability (Figure 6). Workload portability either is not considered a viable option for most enterprises, or they do not see the need for it. Hybrid cloud is complicated, and for many, the added complexity may, for now, outweigh its potential benefits. There is a challenge in execution even for organisations desiring the capability. However, cloud vendors and cloud brokers have been improving their hybrid capabilities, making it easier to use common toolsets across cloud and on-premises environments. Helping enterprises achieve and manage an optimal mix of resources and service types will be a key opportunity for service providers. Figure 6: Multiple Cloud Usage Expectations Q: Which of the following best describes how your organisation will use different on-premises & off-premises cloud environments over the next two years? (n=1503) We will have multiple cloud environments, but there will be little to no interoperability between the cloud environements 29.8% Multi-Cloud We will have multiple cloud environments to migrate workloads or data between different cloud environments 29.0% Multi-Cloud Plus We will focus primarily on a single cloud environment, not multiple cloud 25.7% Single Cloud We will have multiple cloud environments where the delivery of a single business function across the different cloud environments is seamless 15.5% Hybrid 8

Complexities of Hybrid IT Although there are benefits to putting applications in different venues, this can add complexity. It can be challenging to determine which option is the best for a particular workload and to migrate workloads to new locations. Managing the multiple cloud, SaaS, hosting, network and colocation vendors that result is complex and requires time, energy and, ideally, tools that enable IT staff to manage multiple infrastructure options from a single dashboard. We asked end users about the challenging aspects of cloud deployment, and cloud management was considered to be one of the top three challenges, along with cost management and data migration. Cost management Data migration Cloud management (patching OS, monitoring, backup) Automation of business processes Application integration and system retrofitting Determine the right migration approach System monitoring Cloud security Integrating cloud with non-cloud workloads and infrastructure Figure 7: Challenges of Cloud Deployment Q: What does your organisation consider to be the most challenging aspects of cloud deployment? (n=1503) 9

With data and processes shifting across multiple cloud and non-cloud environments, a new approach to management is called for. IT managers are under tremendous pressure to seek new ways to manage and secure multiple IT environments in an effective manner. Automation is important because it helps reduce the operating costs, as well as the pain caused by the growing complexity of business processes and management tasks. It is simply no longer appropriate or cost-effective for these tasks to be done manually. As shown in Figure 8, most organisations we surveyed (73%) said they use modified or off-the-shelf commercial or open source software for managing and automating their IT environments. Figure 8: Hybrid IT Management and Automation Tools Q: When deploying a hybrid IT model as described earlier, are the management and automation tools that you are using primarily (see options). (n=1503) Modified or off-the-shelf commercial software solutions 40% Modified or off-the-shelf open-source software solutions 33% Turnkey solutions provided by MSPs/ IT specialists 25% Don't know 1% We asked enterprises about the management tools that will be critical to their business over the next two years. Microsoft System Center, VMware Cloud Suite and in-house tools were among the top three picks, followed by OpenStack, HP s Eucalyptus and CloudStack (in order of priority). Data migration was the second most common cloud-deployment challenge. While 38% of enterprises we surveyed claimed that they use automation to accelerate application migration, 48% said that migration at their company is manual and labour-intensive or that they use in-house resources. Today s application and data migration remains complex and expensive for most organisations. Figure 9: Application Migration Q: When migrating applications, which of the following statements best describe your situation? (n=1503) We use automation to accelerate application migration 38% We do application migration with in-house resources 26% Application migration is manual and labour intensive 22% We use contractors or specialists for application migration 14% 10

Service Providers Can Help Reduce the Complexity of Hybrid IT For many enterprises, paying for services can reduce the complexity and difficulty of hybrid or multi-cloud options. Service providers can help determine cloud strategy and the best location for workloads, migrate the workloads, manage the infrastructure, or manage the applications themselves. If we take a closer look at the hosting and cloud services that organisations are buying, more than 60% are managed or bundled services, as indicated by our survey respondents. Figure 10: Managed vs. Unmanaged Services Q: Of your organisation s current spending on hosting and cloud services, what percentage is unmanaged versus managed services? [Please sum to 100%.] (n=1503) 11

Managed services have become a key component of service delivery across a range of infrastructure and application products. To start with, organisations are interested in a variety of cloud-enablement services, as shown in Figure 11. Figure 11: Cloud-Enablement Services Q: Which of the following professional services for cloud enablement did your organisation buy within the last 12 months from service providers? How about plans for the next 12 months? (n=1503) 67% 48% 42% 45% 39% 46% 41% 48% 36% 25% 7% 11% 16% 13% 15% Cloud Transformation Services (e.g., technology refresh/modernization, consulting) Cloud Assessment, Readiness and Enablement Services Purchased in last 12 months Cloud Migration Services Plan to purchase in next 12 months Training Have not purchased/ no plans to purchase Testing Security continues to top the list of IT pain points; therefore, enterprises are buying a wide range of security services, as shown in Figure 12. Top purchase priorities such as vulnerability assessment, antivirus and end-point security, as well as advanced anti-malware are centred around solutions that offer real-time threat management addressing evolving malware and hybrid IT vulnerabilities. 12

Figure 12: Security Services Q: Which of the following security services did your organisation purchase or consider purchasing? (n=1503) Anti-DDoS - Anti-Distributed Denial of Service 37% 42% 21% IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (IT GRC) Tools 43% 38% 19% Identity and Access Management (IAM) 41% 42% 18% Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and Logging/Event Management 44% 38% 16% Data Encryption/Encryption Services (including Key Management) 46% 39% 15% Data Loss Prevention (DLP) 51% 36% 14% Advanced Anti-Malware or Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) Protection 48% 39% 13% Antivirus/Endpoint Security 59% 29% 12% Web Application Firewall (WAF) 49% 37% 14% Application Security (including Patching and Firewall Management) 52% 32% 16% Security Configuration Management 55% 34% 10% Vulnerability Assessment 56% 31% 13% Purchased in last 12 months Plan to purchase in next 12 months Have not purchased/ no plans to purchase Managed security, end-to-end application management, disaster recovery as a service, and secure direct connection to cloud service providers are high on the priority list when it comes to delivering real business value to enterprises. In terms of support services, key customer requirements include having technical experts at their disposal, phone-based support and being able to chat online with a specialist (Figure 13). 13

Figure 13: Support Services Q: When working with a provider of managed services (e.g., security), what do you expect from their support organisation? According to our survey, 41% of organisations work with multiple vendors and manage them themselves, and another 37% work with a single vendor that can offer a broad range of products and services it builds and manages. The top IaaS providers at the global level are Microsoft (Azure), AWS, Google (Compute Engine) and IBM (SoftLayer). While these providers are market leaders in all regions, the market for local IaaS providers is highly fragmented. 11% 11% 16% 16% Figure 14: Cloud (IaaS) Providers Currently Used (Global) Q: Thinking about the use of IaaS cloud services in the country of your headquarters, tell us about your IaaS providers. 15 IT Seeks Agility from Emerging Technologies With the use of hybrid IT and multi-cloud models becoming widespread, the role of IT is more critical than ever. CIOs will need to embrace innovative technologies and work with line-of-business leaders to align their transformation strategies with changing business requirements while achieving sustainable growth. 15

Figure 15 shows a list of emerging technologies that organisations have either adopted or evaluated for production scenarios. Figure 15: Emerging Technologies Q: Which of the following technologies/solutions has your company evaluated or adopted for production scenarios? [Select all that apply] (n=1503) Internet of Things (IoT) 37% 45% 18% Virtualised Desktop Infrastructure (On-Premises) 45% 40% 15% Mobile Device Management 44% 43% 13% Software-Defined Networking 45% 42% 13% DevOps/Agile Development 40% 43% 17% Big-Data Solutions/Technologies 50% 35% 16% OpenStack for IaaS/Private Cloud 48% 42% 10% Containers 52% 32% 16% Adopted Evaluated Neither DevOps and Agile are Becoming Commonplace While there are more options for deployment venues and ways to consume IT resources, the way applications are developed are also changing. Agile development, DevOps, containers and microservices all promise to lower the costs and effort of deployment, and speed the time to value for applications of all types. Containers continue to be a driving force in DevOps 52% of enterprises we surveyed are already using container technology, and as usage of containers increases, this should make applications work more flexibly across heterogeneous infrastructure. In terms of current DevOps practices, companies have either set up distributed/specialised teams (34%) or a single team with centralised/specialised skills (32%). Figure 16: DevOps Practices Q: Which of the following best describes your DevOps practices/structures in your organisation? (n=1503) Distributed, specialised teams 34% Single team with centralised, specialised skills 32% Distributed resources working within project teams 19% Different approaches in differtent parts of the organisation 10% No team or practice exists 4% These development and operations teams use software tools from three sources commercial tools from specialised startups (41%), commercial tools from major vendors (30%) or open source tools (29%). In terms of software development, organisations have primarily implemented waterfall or agile methodologies. The use of agile is becoming commonplace. 16

Service providers are transitioning their network architectures with SDN and NFV. According to our survey, most organisations are embracing next-generation networking technologies such as SDN and NFV. They seem to have a good understanding of the benefits and are considering these technologies as an integral part of their data centre and cloud strategies. Survey respondents emphasized the primary benefits as including the ability to deploy more services with scale and speed, and test data requirements in new markets while lowering cost of deployment. Enterprises have moved or are considering moving a wide range of applications to third-party software-defined infrastructure application testing and development, for example. This is happening despite concerns about security (59%), compliance and regulation (46%), and integration with existing networks (39%). Figure 18: Applications Moving to Software-Defined Infrastructure Operated by Third-Party Service Provider Q: What type of applications have you moved/would you consider moving to software-defined infrastructure that is operated and managed by a third-party service provider? 18 Challenges Remain for IT New consumption models for IT, such as cloud and SDN, are bringing greater flexibility to infrastructure, which is welcomed by IT departments. However, they are also bringing added complexity because enterprises must manage deployments in various locations and venues, as well as multiple vendors. Firms are still planning on moving more applications into outsourced venues, but there is increasing demand for services to help with the planning, migration and management of infrastructure and applications. It is early in the journey to hybrid cloud, yet that seems to be the way firms are heading. 18

Recommendations For many enterprises, workloads that are easy to move to cloud have already moved (or were created as cloud-native). Other workloads, however, also may be worth moving to cloud to boost agility, provisioning time or features, even though preparing a business case and making the move itself are more complicated. It could be well worth the cost to pay for professional services around cloud strategy, readiness and migration for these next workloads. More than 70% of organisations we surveyed plan to use more than one cloud service provider over the next two years, while 42% noted that cloud management was one of the most challenging aspects of cloud deployment. IT managers are under tremendous pressure to seek new ways to gain visibility, and manage and secure multiple IT environments in an effective manner. We recommend that enterprises consider hiring service providers to manage multiple clouds or evaluate using automation and management software to reduce the burden of cloud management. When evaluating service providers, ask to speak with current customers, and ask detailed questions about the provider s methods of communication, level of support, availability and quality of technical staff (particularly security professionals). Our survey has shown that these are key requirements for enterprises but are not always covered in traditional RFP processes. Agile development, DevOps, containers and microservices all promise to lower the costs and effort of deployment, and speed the time to value for applications of all types. Enterprises should continue to move toward broad implementation of these approaches, especially driving a DevOps culture shift across the business. Enterprises should consider moving applications to third-party software-defined infrastructure in order to enhance scale and speed of deployment, more easily enter new markets, and lower costs.
