What type of availability do you need (or want) o Availability = Accessibility (can you reach the data) + Durability (copies and versions of data) o Accessibility = High-Availability (HA) along with Reliability Availability Service (RAS) o Durability = Consistent and Integrity of data with copies and versions in multiple places o As long as humans involved, any device, hardware, software, service as a SPOF ;) o However humans can design for resiliency using various techniques What are your environment and applications profiles? o Do you treat all applications and data the same? o Do you have different RTO/RPO for various applications? o How, when, where, why and with what do you protect data? o RAID / Erasure Codes / FEC and Replication by themselves are not a replacement for backup o Data Protection = RAID / Erasure Code / FEC / Replicate plus versions, snapshots or copies

What type of capacity do you need (or want) o As much capacity per dollar (or other currency) as possible o Raw, formatted, protected, non-protected, thick or thin provisioned o Dedicated or shared, temporary, long-term, very long-term such as archive o Low cost yet durable, good value with protection and durable, as cheap as possible What are your economic constraints or requirements? $ / capacity o Do you know what your costs are? $ / transaction o Spend as little as possible, protect existing investment IOPs per $ o Reduce capital purchases as much as possible $ / restore or to archive o Reduce operating and recurring expenses $ / activity per watt o Need to lease, rent or subscribe to stretch budget Cost per VM or database? o No barriers as long as it helps, you are a sales persons dream account ;)
