1 Integrated Communications for Airports The solution for airport operators Airports face unique challenges heightened by safety and security needs in the effort to deliver real-time applications, support mobile users, manage obsolescence and improve return on investment. To meet these needs, Alcatel-Lucent the network integrator of choice has developed Integrated Communications for Airports, a customizable solution that enables airport operators to boost operational efficiency, enhance safety and security, generate new revenue and improve services for airport stakeholders.
2 The challenge With air travel in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) expected to grow 4.9% in the next 20 years, * airports worldwide are continually expanding, driving economic and community development. As hubs for transportation and change, airports face specific challenges intensified by the growing need for security in the effort to provide real-time applications, handle obsolescence, support mobile users and improve return on investment. * Source: The World Bank website: Air Transport. ENHANCING SAFETY AND SECURITY Security always a key concern for the airport industry has become even more critical since 9/11, driving considerable investment in video surveillance and access control. Most new video surveillance systems employ digital rather than analog technology, for improved monitoring and real-time, intelligent image interpretation. Video surveillance systems have to operate in a range of environments: in terminal buildings, along airport perimeters and in other airport facilities. A secure, resilient, multi-service IP communications network is key for an effective end-to-end security solution. BOOSTING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY A variety of stakeholders operate airport infrastructure, including government agencies, airlines, air traffi c control, business tenants, real-estate developers, and airport building and operations center management. These stakeholders require mission-critical, high-speed unifi ed communications to ensure reliable, secure and cost-effi cient operations throughout the airport facility. A robust network is essential to avoid business downtime and failure of airport operations, which could adversely impact airport and airline security. As a minimum, downtime could result in potential penalties from carriers and even loss of revenue. IMPROVING SERVICES FOR PASSENGERS AND TENANTS With the number of passengers rising constantly, there is growing demand for reliable communications to handle the fl ow of visitors and improve the comfort of the traveling public. Services with online capacities, including Wi-Fi Internet access and in-seat entertainment, are increasingly requested by travellers both on the ground and in the air. KEEPING COSTS DOWN In today s diffi cult economic environment, signifi cant reductions in operational expenses (OPEX) are essential, especially given the challenge airports face with disparate, obsolete networks they have acquired over the years that are increasingly diffi cult to maintain. These reductions can be achieved through application convergence on a multi-service network which, for example, implements sophisticated fault and asset management and remote site monitoring. A multi-service network can also ensure the growth and stability of communications platforms by increasing their capacity to support new applications and preparing to accommodate state-of-the-art airplanes such as the Airbus A380. GENERATING NEW REVENUES Airport operators can leverage their telecommunications infrastructure investments by offering airport tenants and passengers telecom services such as fi xed and wireless applications, as well as voice, data and video services. These services provide new, innovative ways of driving up profi t. The challenge for operators is to have a network that can deliver future services without needing continuous new investments. 02 Alcatel-Lucent Integrated Communications for Airports
3 Alcatel-Lucent s Solution To meet airport operators needs, Alcatel-Lucent acts as end-to-end network integrator, providing the turnkey design, delivery and operation of airport networks, through its solution: Integrated Communications for Airports. This solution, which combines hardware and software provided by Alcatel-Lucent and leading technology partners, enables airport stakeholders to optimize the management of information flows within the airport facility. Solution Building Blocks COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK A broadband multi-service communications network is the foundation for carrying and distributing a wide range of traffi c fl ows across the airport infrastructure, which may include IP networks, optical networks, WiMAX / TETRA and microwave. The network provides airport operators with real-time traffi c monitoring and control capabilities, while giving passengers real-time, accurate fl ight information. SECURITY AND CONTROL SYSTEMS Security systems are deployed to prevent, detect and react to security threats in real time. These systems include: CCTV (video surveillance) to detect suspicious behavior, locate abandoned luggage, track individuals and monitor passenger overfl ow at security checkpoints Airport access control (e.g., Radio Frequency Identifi cation (RFID), and fi ngerprint and iris recognition) Fire detection devices and alarm systems INFORMATION/ ENTERTAINMENT Wi-Fi Internet access Airport TV network Clocks Flight Information Display System (FIDS) Public address system Location-based services Voice systems/voip OPERATIONS CONTROL ROOM Operational Support Systems (OSS) Network management Security management Building management (electro-mechanical Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system) Remote crisis centers AIRPORT IT SYSTEMS Airport software systems serve passengers and airport management by providing vital information and ensuring operational effi ciency. Key applications include: Common User Terminal Equipment (CUTE) for airline check-in desks Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) for passengers automatic check-in stations Baggage reconciliation system Resource management Airport Operational Data Base (AODB) Alcatel-Lucent s Integrated Communications for Airports Solution Overview Data Network Voice Network Security Management Network Management Operations Control Room Building Management TENANTS Check-in: CUTE/CUSS WiMAX/Wi-Fi/TETRA Radio Wi-Fi Internet Access Clocks Communications Network Information/ Entertainment OPERATIONS MULTI-SERVICE TRANSPORT NETWORK PASSENGERS RFID Airport IT Systems Resource Management Baggage Reconciliation System AODB FIDS Airport TV Network Public Address Iris Recognition Fingerprint Recognition Airport Access Control Security & Control Systems CCTV Fire Detection Integrated Communications for Airports Alcatel-Lucent 03
