1 Thai-German Technology Symposium Energy Efficient Solutions for the Iron and Steel Sector in Thailand Bangkok, Oct 1, 2014 The Thai Government aims to reduce energy intensity in 2030 by 25% compared to 2010, which is equivalent to a reduction of final energy consumption by 23.5% or about 38,200 tons of crude oil equivalent (ktoe) in An important sector for realising energy efficiency potentials in Thailand is the industry sector; especially the energy intensive industry sector can benefit from energy savings. Through a comparison with international best practices, and considering the current technology and production process in Thailand, the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand (ISIT) estimates a potential of 10 to 33% for energy conservation in this sector. In the framework of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) Project Development Programme (PDP) Energy Efficiency in South-East Asia, a sector analysis and needs assessment has been conducted, in order to identify most effective energy efficient technologies in the iron and steel sector, and to see where potential business partnerships between German and local companies in the iron and steel sector in Thailand can be promoted. Based on the results of the assessment and the wish of ISIT for more support when it comes to technology transfer, the Project Development Programme is aiming to initiate close cooperation with the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). VDMA represents over 3,100 mainly small/medium size member companies in the engineering industry in Germany, making it one of the largest and most important industrial associations in Europe. ISIT could greatly benefit from a close cooperation in regard to VDMA s institutional knowledge, as well as their members expertise. In addition to ISIT, the Federation of Thai Industries which is the overarching Thai industry association, is closely involved in the cooperation. For this reason the Project Development Programme is organizing a symposium for both associations and their members to initiate more institutionalized cooperation. On the basis of the technologies identified in the needs assessment the symposium aims at exploring concrete cooperation potential for the respective member companies.

3 ISIT background The Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand (ISIT) is an independence organization established by the Ministry of Industry in November 2000 under the Foundation for Industrial Development. The Institute represents the united intention of the state and the private sector to see effective co-ordination of their efforts in enhancing the strength of the iron and steel industry development in Thailand. 4 FTI Background The Federation of Thai industries (FTI) was established on 13 November, FTI is the private sector administrative juristic person to serve as the core organization and also as the centre for all Thai industries in the kingdom. It is a non-profit organization with the main duties of promoting and supporting the industry focusing on both developing sustainable growth for all industrial operations in the country. F.T.I. is the core centre in the following four areas: Centre of industrial co-operation among and with private sector and government sector in Thailand and abroad Service centre for all industrial developments Activities centre for all industrial operators. Problem-solving centre for all industrial enterprises in the kingdom, both member and non-members regardless of sizes and types. Under F.T.I. Act, 1987 it is empowered to perform the duty of representing private sector in the industrial sector of Thailand. The steel industry is one of big group under the FTI umbrella, currently including around 110 steel companies. Dr. Songwut Kraipatsapong of Toyo Millenium Co., Ltd is the president of FTI s steel group. The group has several departments i.e. energy and environment, standards, international market and administration. Regular working group meetings happen on a monthly basis. Roles and function of FTI 1. To participate in the formulation of policy and in the government s plan for the national economic development and on the matters related to the country s industries; 2. To serve as a delegate of the Thai private sector in addressing the government on data, information and industrial issues through the voice of the Federation of Thai Industries in the Joint Standing Committee of Commerce, Industry and Banking(JSCCIB); 3. To participate in various activities contributing to the country s industrial economic development; 4. To create, promote and develop various activities based on the initiatives of F.T.I. members, Board of Directors, Industry Clubs and provincial Chapters; 5. To offer to the government agencies the F.T.I. s recommendations on the development and solution for industrial problems and issues related to the economy; 6. To protect the right and due regard of members justice and other general industrialists in the country; 7. To foster a linkage with countries of ASEAN, Europe, America and Australia in the channels of government sector, private sector and international organizations; 8. To participate in the formulation of the country s industrial standards to ensure that compliances to the said standard can be compiled by industrialists; 9. To act as a central forum where exchanging of ideas among members of F.T.I. can take place ; and 10. To provide services for members on various aspects including dissemination of news, the offer of data, business advices and consultancy.

5 VDMA Profile The VDMA represents over 3,100 mainly small/medium size member companies in the engineering industry, making it one of the largest and most important industrial associations in Europe. The foundation for the VDMA was laid in Mechanical engineering is a key technology and a powerful engine driving the economy. 6 German company profiles ABP Induction ABP Induction Systems GmbH, headquartered in Dortmund, develops and manufactures induction melting furnaces and induction heating plants for the foundry, steel and forging industries including suitable automation solutions. These induction systems are used for melting, holding, pouring and heating metals and are used in the manufacture of components for the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, energy industry (particularly wind power) or the construction industry (e. g. pipes, valves or pumps). In the field of high-performance induction systems, ABP Induction sees itself as a technology leader. In Germany, the company is also the market leader. The induction furnace systems are produced in Dortmund, Germany, in Vadodara, India and in Shanghai, China. 65% of the induction furnace systems made in Dortmund are exported; worldwide sales and service are handled by a total of eleven branches of ABP in all major markets also by sales and service center in Bangkok, Thailand. ABP Induction has its roots in two companies: the Swedish ASEA and BBC from Switzerland. The Dortmund site was founded by BBC in 1922 and the first industrial furnaces were built here from In 1988, the two companies merged to form ABB. The induction division was separated from ABB in ABP Induction Systems was born. Today the company is owned by the US financial investor CM Acquisition. Since the invention and installation of the first functional channel-type induction furnace by the former company ASEA in the Swedish town of Gysinge in 1903, the company has continued to advance induction technology. A total of 30 patents have been filed. The most important ones include the TWIN-POWER technology in which two furnaces operate with a single power supply, a crucible push-out device and transverse-field heating. As a manufacturer of plants for particularly energy-intensive industries, ABP Induction is also involved in the EU project NIWE, exploring efficient processes associated with induction technology. ABP invest year by year in research and development, which is carried out exclusively in Dortmund. The company is managed by Dr. Wolfgang Andree, Bernd Bartelheimer and Paul Decker.
