2 About ETNO The ETNO (European Telecommunication Network Operator) represents the principal policy group for Europe s leading networks and services providers The association (established in 1992) currently accounts: 40 member companies in 35 countries a total turnover of more than 600 billion a year employees 70% of total sector investment 2

3 ETNO member companies towards sustainability ETNO member products&solutions (e.g. smart services, videoconferencing, teleworking) enable energy savings for citizens and businesses In 2012 ETNO has launched its Corporate Responsibility Charter: a voluntary commitment in TLC sector, open to all players on the market natural evolution of the former Environmental Charter launched in 1996 and Sustainability Charter launched in 2004 ETNO Sustainability Report (click here for 2012 version) Note: In 2010 Charter signatories used ~14TWh of electrical energy in their home Country Overall amount of CO 2 emissions out of electricity consumption Total turnover Overall amount of CO 2 emissions for vehicle fuel Total turnover 3

4 The ETNO CORE Energy Task Force (1/2) Created since 2004 by the signatories of the ETNO Sustainability Charter Currently under the ETNO COrporate REsponsibilty WG Focused on the following goals: 1. decrease further the energy consumption of the ICT branch 2. motivate society to make use of the existing potential of Green ICT 3. develop new solutions to increase the energy saving impact of ICT 4

5 The ETNO CORE Energy Task Force (2/2) The Group mainly develops benchmark activities and shares knowledge/best practices among its participants The Group has recently officially published its 2012 Energy Report, containing the most important outcomes Such Report is divided into two main parts 1. a first part dealing with the main activities and initiatives jointly performed by the Group participants 2. A second part highlighting the main energy saving projects carried on by single Companies 5

7 Benchmark on power consumption of STB and HG Goal: to provide a snapshot of current state of the art in energy efficiency of 38 Set Top Box (STB) and 21 Home Gateways (HG) Best in Class for both configurations are the most recent devices Basically results show an improvement trend for both equipment types in all the specific power modes supported However a quite big discrepancy appears between best in class and the worst case. 7

8 Benchmarking on Energy monitoring Goal: to have an overview of the implementation level of energy monitoring among different ETNO members Benchmark of remote monitoring and control (both passive and active) of Central Offices, Data Centres, Radio Base Stations and offices The level of implementation of the above mentioned 8 item is quite different depending on the various Operators The two items more widely implemented are respectively the passive remote monitoring of Central Offices and Data Centre. Note: Magyar Telecom belongs to Deutsche Telekom Group 8 Level 1: monitoring planned Level 2: monitoring under trial Level 3: monitoring widely adopted

9 Benchmarking on Fuel Cells Goal: to investigate the use of Fuel Cells among ETF members Most used: H2 cylinders, power ranges 1 5kW The technology has still a limited diffusion (due to high costs) 9 Note: Magyar Telecom belongs to Deutsche Telekom Group

10 Benchmark on Fresh Air Cooling solutions Goal: to provide a snapshot of current efficiency of different Fresh Air Cooling solutions adopted by ETF members Referenz: air conditioning with 100% compressor cooling and 0% free cooling (source: PASM) Energy consumption per 1kW cooling load The total cost include yearly plant depreciation charge The test results show a wide range of efficiency values (but different room T and different geographical areas ) 10 Note: PASM is part of Deutsche Telekom Group

11 Benchmark on GHG Reporting Goal: to better understand what sort of emissions are reported by ETF members All companies report systematically on Scope 1 In Scope 3 only 50% (most often reported category: business travel) 11

13 Examples of projects from single Companies (1/3) Hybrid Cooling with Natural Wind Power Reduction of operating hours of air conditioning to 23% Savings electric power: ¾ of power consumption/year Kyoto Data Center Power consumption for cooling reduced by 60% with yearly saving of 5GWh or Ton CO 2 Videoservices reducing travelling Replacing travel with video conf in 2012 has had the greatest impact, leading to emission savings of 17,395 tonnes KPN Portal: Energy saving by ICT KPN realized a portal where customers and other individuals or organizations can find out their own saving opportunities 13

14 Examples of projects from single Companies (2/3) Fresh Air Cooling solution for Data Centers reconstruct the existing air condition systems of the engine rooms, and adapt the fresh air cooling system on it (savings for ~7GWh/year) Environmental labeling of mobile and fixed devices The label covers 3 indicators: Carbon footprint (CO 2 limitation); Amount of CO 2 produced during product life cycle; Resources preservation Smart subgrid project Study aiming to reduce power peaks in the grid, store and use of renewable energy and stabilize the public grid. Lead batteries are used. Networked with a central control station via a controller GREEN P&T/EDITUS building in Kayl Construction of a new building with renewable sources and fresh air cooling (62% energy saving compared to a traditional new building) 14 Note: Magyar Telecom and Power & Air Solutions belong to Deutsche Telekom Group

15 Examples of projects from single Companies (3/3) Fresh Air Cooling Datacenter A pilot has been carried successfully over a period of 1 year. Steps towards a first implementation are ongoing (expected savings: 20GWh/a) LED for Telephone Booths Replacing fluorescent lamps with high efficiency LED in booths; the lamps can be powered from the usual remote power supply of the phones; it also uses a sensor of presence. Energy savings for 7GWh/year Energy saving in CO Upgrade and extend the surface of an existing switch site with use of free cooling Savings of ~ 600MWh/year CO2 emissions reduction ~ 274 tons CO2 / year In-row with cold isle cooling design Separated cold-hot isle containment design with integrated inrow cooling of equipment racks. This offers possibility to separately control T within equipment racks and surrounding space Savings of ~ 1,4GWh/year 15
