2 Why am I making this presentation? To compare energy used and GHG emissions over lifecycle cle of hybrid satellite solutions with alternative e technologies: 30Mbits/s per user satellite plus low capacity terrestrial versus high capacity terrestrial alternatives To highlight aspects of satellite network design which could lead to better energy efficiency: Providing reasoned guidance to designers on best practice for energy saving. (Ideally) to show that satellite compares favourably with alternatives on energy efficiency and emissions when whole lifecycle is taken into account. 17 Conclusions From an energy efficiency perspective, hybrid satellite systems can deliver broadband services on a comparable basis with terrestrial (fixed or mobile) alternatives when use of low power modes for satellite modem and IUG are incorporated into design Further work is needed to integrate the user equipment to obtain this level of energy efficiency BATS Broadband Access via Integrated Terrestrial & Satellite Systems 17
