3 TUESDAY SESSIONS WEDNESDAY SESSIONS (continued) GWAC FOUNDATIONAL SESSION The TE Roadmap Members of the GridWise Architecture Council will present the developing framework and other tools for the roadmap on the future of transactive energy. The roadmap considers drivers of change, triggers for transactive energy system deployment, and required infrastructure for deployment at scale. Gaps in technology and infrastructure that may require investment are identified. Moderator: David Forfia, Director, Enterprise Architecture & IT Transformation, ERCOT Paul De Martini, Managing Director, Newport Consulting Group LLC Farrokh Rahimi, Senior Vice President, Open Access Technology International, Inc. Ron Ambrosio, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder, Utopus Insights, Inc. REAL WORLD TECHNOLOGY, DESIGN & POLICY CHALLENGES PANEL This session will have submitted paper presentations highlighting the real challenges on designing a TE energy system and the changes necessary in policy landscape to accommodate progress. Over the last few years, transactive energy systems have moved from a topic of academic discussion to full-blown panel sessions at most energy conferences. We are seeing growing interest from regulators, utilities and third parties. Questions that people most often pose include: how does this impact me? What problems can this help address? I can see a use for this approach, but when should I start preparing to use it? This track will focus on real-world changes and challenges to the electric infrastructure, and will set the context for the conference by focusing on relevant problems that need to be addressed. Moderator: Gerald Gray, Sr. Program Manager, EPRI Jim Waight, Omnetric Ed Cazalet, CEO, TeMIX, Inc. Thomas McDermott, Chief Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Steve Widergren, Principal Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory David Boundy, Intel TUESDAY, 3:30pm - 5:30pm WEDNESDAY, 11:00am - 12:00pm WEDNESDAY SESSIONS NIST TE CHALLENGE OVERVIEW AND INVITATION An overview of the NIST TE Challenge competition and opportunities for additional participation. David Holmberg will describe how the NIST TE Challenge is working to advance modeling and simulation for Transactive Energy, while working with industry stakeholders to better understand Transactive Energy and its implementation. There will be a TE Challenge Workshop after the day s conference activities have concluded. Conference attendees who are interested in participating in the NIST TE Challenge are encouraged to take part in this workshop. David Holmberg, Mechanical Engineer, WEDNESDAY, 1:30pm - 2:00pm KEYNOTE VENDOR TECHNOLOGY PANEL This year s this keynote will take a vendor perspective. The panel session will start with a keynote presentation by the panel moderator describing the challenges the electric power industry is facing due to proliferation of prosumer-side distributed energy resources (DERs). These will include both operational and business issues the utilities and system operators are increasingly facing. The vendor panelists will then each describe how their solutions address these emerging challenges, and how they intend to leverage (or are leveraging) the Transactive Energy System principles (possibly also leveraging DSO functionality) to augment their solutions. TRANSACTIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS IN PRACTICE PANEL This session will have submitted paper presentations on how TE is taking shape in practice in the marketplace. This track will offer practical perspectives from transactive energy systems that have been implemented already by explaining: What challenges the systems were created to address How Transactive Energy Systems were presented to and embraced by utilities, service providers, vendors, and customers What areas caused the most challenges Which issues (design, rules, financial, technology, etc.) could have been improved and made more effective had some form of standardization been in place Moderator: Farrokh Rahimi, Senior Vice President, Open Access Technology International, Inc. Paul Steffes, CEO, Steffes Corp. Michel Kohanim, CEO, Universal Devices, Inc. Takahiro Tsukishima, Hitachi Farrokh Albuyeh, OATI WEDNESDAY, 8:30am 9:30am Moderator: Ron Ambrosio, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder, Utopus Insights, Inc. Gerald Gray, Sr. Program Manager, EPRI Farrokh Rahimi, Senior Vice President, Open Access Technology International, Inc. Kenneth Wacks, President, Home, Building & Utility Systems Joshua Wong, CEO, Opus One Solutions Mark Yao, Utopus Insights EXPERIENCES FROM SMART CITIES A smart city is a vision to integrate multiple information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT) solutions in a secure fashion to manage a city's assets, just as smart grid is for the electricity infrastructure. As the grid considers the need to substantially scale the use of flexible distributed energy resources, and has devoted growing attention to the need to address not only the economics, but also the control system implications to ensure grid reliability, smart cities have similarly complex challenges. For smart cities the economics need to be optimized over multiple utilities, transportation, and other departments while making more efficient use of physical infrastructure through artificial intelligence and data analytics to support a strong and healthy economic, social, cultural development. This sounds a lot like transactive energy and this panel explores the similarities. REAL WORLD TECHNOLOGY, DESIGN & POLICY CHALLENGES WORKSHOP Part II of the discussion started earlier in the day. In this interactive workshop attendees will be able to be active participants in the discussion at the event, selecting between one of two topics to determine ways that TE can progress in the marketplace. TRANSACTIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS IN PRACTICE WORKSHOP Part II of the discussion started earlier in the day. In this interactive workshop attendees will be able to be active participants in the discussion at the event, selecting between one of two topics to determine ways that TE can progress in the marketplace. Moderator: Ron Bernstein, President, RBCG, LLC Tim Wolf, Director of Marketing for Electricity and Smart Grid Solutions, Itron Curt Kirkeby, Fellow Engineer, Avista Utilities Wilfred Pinfold, Concurrent Systems, LLC Ron Sege, Chairman & CEO, Echelon Corporation Erik Caldwell, City of San Diego Steph Stoppenhagen, Business Development Director, Smart Cities, Black & Veatch WEDNESDAY, 2:00pm 3:30pm WEDNESDAY, 4:00pm 5:30pm WEDNESDAY, 4:00pm 5:30pm MEZZANINE 5 WEDNESDAY, 9:30am 10:30am NIST TE CHALLENGE PHASE II SCENARIO WORKSHOP The NIST TE Challenge has the goals to advance common interoperable approaches to TE co-simulation, and to do this around a collaboratively developed scenario. This workshop will present this scenario in depth and allow team formation and discussion around how each team can advance TE simulations. This technical meeting is open to all considering participation. David Holmberg, Mechanical Engineer, WEDNESDAY, 5:30pm 7:00pm
4 THURSDAY SESSIONS NOTES STANDARDIZATION FOR TRANSACTIVE ENERGY PANEL This session will have submitted paper presentations covering key topics for standardization and interoperability of TE assets and systems. This panel will serve to provide a logical progression of the challenges currently facing the industry. Because temporary solutions and pilot systems often become long-term solutions, the objective is to identify areas of standardization where: Different approaches to Transactive Energy Systems can converge Existing standards can be adapted for Transactive Energy Systems There are common challenges amenable to common approaches and standards Vendor support and sharing of best practices could develop Moderator: Gordon Matthews, BPA Davis Holmberg, Mechanical Engineer, Rish Ghatikar, Technical Executive, Electric Power Research Institute Paul DeMartini, Managing Director, Newport Consulting Group LLC Kenneth Wacks, President, Home, Building & Utility Systems James Mater, General Manager, Smart Grid and Director, QualityLogic, Inc. THURSDAY, 9:30am 10:30am STANDARDIZATION FOR TRANSACTIVE ENERGY WORKSHOP Part II of the discussion started right before this discussion. In this interactive workshop attendees will be able to be active participants in the discussion at the event, to determine ways that TE can progress with standard technologies, approaches, and solutions. THURSDAY, 11:00am 12:00pm WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN S ROLE IN TRANACTIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS? Blockchains are an enabling component of secure, digital crypto-currencies, such as Bitcoin and Etherium. These currencies provide a medium for value exchange using cryptography to secure the transactions and to control the creation of additional units of the currency. All transactions are stored in cryptographically-immutable distributed ledgers called blockchains while trusted executable smart contracts implement transaction logic and other business process behaviors. This combination of components helps provide the transaction transparency and tamper-resistance needed for building and maintaining trust between transacting parties. This panel discusses the application of blockchains and cryptocurrencies to transactive energy and looks at the technology from technical, economic, and utility perspectives. Moderator: Dave Hardin, Chief Architect, Smart Electric Power Alliance Lawrence Orsini, LO3 Energy Joshua Wong, CEO, Opus One Solutions Shawn Chandler, Director, Navigant Consulting, Inc.
