1 Workshop Summary Report Database Design Verification Workshop Report Prepared July Background A workshop held on May 12, 2011, organized by the American National Standards Institute () with the support of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Standards Wars: Myth or Reality? brought together a broad range of stakeholders to share their views and insights on standards development, coordination, and competition. During the workshop discussions, attendees uncovered instances where conflict and duplication in standards development unintentionally occurred due to lack of awareness of existing standardization efforts. Workshop attendees also discussed tools to identify potentially conflicting and duplicative standards projects as early as possible in their development including NSSN ( the search engine for standards, which is currently under redevelopment. A follow-up workshop to discuss the redevelopment and enhancement of NSSN as well as integrating standards development data was planned. This meeting, the Database Design Verification Workshop, was held on March 21, 2012, in Arlington, VA. members, especially standards developing organizations (SDOs) that produce American National Standards (ANS), were encouraged to participate. 2.0 Report Format and Acknowledgements Representatives from a range of interested stakeholder groups participated in the workshop; a list of in-person attendees is available in Attachment 1. A webinar was also held in conjunction with this meeting, and a list of its attendees is available in Attachment 2. Recognition and sincere appreciation are due to the following: NIST, for its support of this activity and its many contributions to advancing dialogue and solutions related to this topic, especially Mary Saunders and Gordon Gillerman Lane Hallenbeck, vice president, accreditation services, for his leadership and his introductory remarks 3.0 Opening Remarks Mr. Hallenbeck thanked the attendees for taking part in the meeting and expressed gratitude to NIST for providing support for the workshop and the overall project. The Database Design Verification Workshop was presented as a follow-up to last year s Standards Wars workshop, Database Verification Workshop Summary Report Page 1 of 6

2 which invited participants to engage in an informal discussion about standards-related data and identify specific contacts in organizations for potential future collaboration. The Database Design Verification Workshop, explained Mr. Hallenbeck, is intended to update participants about s plans to reveal more robust ANS development and approval data. members and the general public had previously requested better access to ANS data, and Mr. Hallenbeck reported that a plan is in place to make that a reality. He said that the meeting was intended to raise issues, summarize key points, and identify designated representatives capable of moving forward with the project. 4.0 NSSN Update Status Bob Hager, s senior director of production, led a discussion on the New NSSN. He stated that the project sought to improve ANS data retrieval and presentation, a goal that was seen as the highest priority of members and the general public. NSSN is expected to present richer ANS development data, providing access to more data elements through its improved search and filtering capabilities. Additionally, the new version of NSSN will have both a basic search tool with distinct document number and title/abstract options, and a robust advanced search that includes a dynamic filtering of results. This enhanced NSSN is designed to better assist users in identifying potentially conflicting and duplicative standards projects in the early stages of development. The redeveloped NSSN will be integrated with s new platform, which will include a consistent online presence across all sites and next-generation robust search tools. The participants engaged in a question-and-answer session with staff. Participant suggestions for NSSN improvements included: Inclusion of a key word search field Increasing NSSN s allowed character length from 500 to as high as 1,000 Allowing searches of Standards Action Addition of an emerging areas data field Initiation of marketing outreach intended to show SDOs the benefits of contributing data to NSSN Staff will take these proposed changes under advisement while redevelopment of NSSN continues. 5.0 Integrating Standards Development Data from ANS and Non-ANS Sources Mr. Hager and Mary Weldon, database administrator, led a discussion detailing the Phase 2 potential goal of incorporating non-ans development data into NSSN. Staff noted that the intent of this phase is to facilitate discovery of related standards development projects and to make potential coordination between standards developers easier. plans to incorporate a broader set of SDOs in this phase, and will look to the standards community for assistance in identifying these groups. 3 Another goal is to make the NSSN database and interface as extensible as possible to accommodate a range of data elements describing different development processes. The goal is to present conceptually similar stages of development to allow for easier comparison. For example, NSSN might display similar: development stages/codes project initiation dates approval dates However, preserving easy search and retrieval of unique ANS-related data remains a priority. 6.0 Outreach to Membership and Non-members for Data Because plans to include non-ans development data in NSSN, participation and cooperation from a broader set of SDOs will be required. Both the audience and the broader constituency were asked to identify the contacts within their organizations who could provide the data feeds necessary to populate NSSN with their development data. Participants were asked to provide that information to Ms. Weldon, the contact for this purpose. Additionally, the audience was asked to provide with contact information for any relevant organizations (non-ans developers, consortia, etc.) so that they may be contacted to provide development data. 7.0 Closing Remarks and Next Steps Mr. Hallenbeck closed the workshop by recapping some of the key points raised during the day s sessions, and noted that a workshop report would be produced. He thanked everyone for their contributions to the meeting and said he looked forward to continuing the process during the next workshop. 8.0 Next Steps One additional workshop will be held during the next six months.
