3 Promoting Eco-innovation (2) MCM 2007, OECD Minister Amari, (former), METI, proposed the concept of Eco-Innovation. 4 2. Eco-Innovation Activities in Japan Promoting Eco-Innovation (3) <Our concept of Eco-Innovation> Eco-innovation is innovation aimed at improving the quality of life for mankind. It is sustainable through the development of a sound and environmentally-friendly economy that utilizes natural resources and the environment, effectively and efficiently. <Examples of Eco-innovation> Top Runner program (e.g. air-conditioners) LCA, Carbon Footprint, Green IT, etc 4

7 Eco Leaf Program LCAs for products are certified by a third party The EcoLeaf mark includes detailed information on the environmental impact of the product for the consumer The program began in 2002 and as of December 2007 a total of 639 have been registered No.XXX-XX-XXX 7

11 Green IT Project (1) Development of advanced energy-saving technologies, such as semiconductors and display technologies, has been successfully supported by a collaborative effort that includes industry, academia, and government. In addition to existing programs, the Green IT Project will be initiated to develop innovative information technologies based on medium and long-term perspectives (draft budget for fiscal 2008: 3 billion yen). 11
