1 ITRS Capacity Planner Data Collector Database and Scheduler Instructions The collector will use the Microsoft Windows task scheduler to allow you to configure frequent data updates and ensure your model and capacity predictions are up to date. Although you can run this on your own machine, we d encourage the use of a dedicated VM Minimum Requirements: 2x2GHz, 4GB RAM.NET 4.5, Windows 7 1. Identify a server that the application will run on meeting the minimum requirements above 2. If you haven t already, download the data collector application 3. Log into server that will run the data collector and install 4. Once installed, launch the application. Enter your Capacity Planner account username and password to establish a secure connection To extract data from a VMWare environment: a. Add a new target vcenter server by selecting File -> new -> vcentre collection from the menu b. Enter vcentre administration credentials and test the connection to the vcentre server c. Enter the collection server Windows administration username and password to schedule a daily collection using windows job scheduling. d. Repeat steps (a) and (c) for each unique vcenter server. 2 Extract data from an ITRS Geneos database To extract data from an ITRS Geneos database, it is assumed that a database is available containing the metrics required for Capacity Planner. Please contact your ITRS representative if this is not in place. Install the ODBC Driver and Configure a DSN Install the ODBC driver and configure a DSN to connect to the Geneos database. 1. Download and install a 64-bit ODBC MS Windows driver and administrator tool ( 2. Open the 64-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator 3. On the User DSN tab, select Add 4. In the Create New Data Source dialog, select the MySQL ODBC 5.3 Unicode Driver, then click Finish Page 2 of 5

3 5. Complete the fields in the MySQL Connector dialog, then test the connection using the Test button, or click OK a. Data Source Name: the name of your Geneos db b. Description: free text field for you to use to add information about the db c. TCP/IP Server and Port: the IP address and port number of the database d. User: database username e. Password: database password f. Database: use this drop-down menu to select your database from the list (if you have filled in the other fields in this form correctly, your database should be listed Connect to the Geneos database: 1. Unzip and install the Capacity Planner Data Collector.msi file (contact your ITRS representative if you do not have this file) 2. Run the Capacity Planner Collection Manager 3. Select File > New > Geneos collection Page 3 of 5

4 4. In the Add New Geneos Database Collection dialog, complete all the fields a. ODBC DSN Name: the Data Source name entered in the ODBC Data Source Administrator (step 6, above) b. ODBC DSN UserId: the db username used in Step 6 (above) c. ODBC Password: the db password used in Step 6 (above) d. Database prefix: (optional) enter the prefix required to query tables in the database Important: the Schedule Collection fields relate to your local host username and password e. Username: your MS Windows username f. Password: your MS Windows password g. Run daily at: the time you want the database collection process to run 5. Click Save 6. In the Capacity Planner Collection Manager, click Run Selected to initiate the collection process Page 4 of 5

5 Note: this will take some time to complete, depending on the number of servers to collect. It is not unusual for the first 30-day collection from vcentre to take a number of hours. The Status column will give regular updates on progress To prevent the initial 30-day collection and perform an extraction only for a single day (recommended for environments >1000 servers) select Settings -> Always collect 24 hours. Once the collection is complete and data is transferred, you will receive an from Capacity Planner indicating that your data is being processed. After some time, you will receive a second from Capacity Planner informing you that your baseline is now available. Use the link in that to log into Capacity Planner. Page 5 of 5
