1 Guided exercise 1: Setting up your development environment Overview In this guided exercise you will set up the development environment for creating Data Object Services. The exercise steps take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You perform this exercise in your live version of OpenEdge. Follow the exercise instructions exactly. 2 Part 1 Creating and starting the database In this part, you will create a copy of the sports3000 database and start it. Step Task 1. Extract the files in db\sports3000_oe117.zip to C:\OpenEdge\WRK. 2. Select Start > Progress > OpenEdge > Proenv. A new window that is set up for a Progress OpenEdge session opens. By default, C:\OpenEdge\WRK is the OpenEdge working directory where the database files have been extracted. 3. Type the following command: proserve sports3000 -H localhost S The Database Server for this database will start. When the Database Server is started, a sports3000.lk file is created. It remains in the directory with the other database files as long as the Database Server runs. 4. Close the Proenv window. 3 Part 2 Creating a workspace In this part, you will create a workspace and connect to the database that you created in Part 1. Step Task 1. To create a workspace: a. Select Start > All Programs > Progress > OpenEdge 11.7 > Developer Studio. b. In the Workspace launcher, type C:\progress_education\openedge\PDO \workspace in the Workspace field and then click OK. c. Click Workbench. 2. To connect the database to the workspace: a. Click Window > Preferences. b. Expand Progress OpenEdge > Database Connections. c. Click New. The Add Connection Profile page appears. d. Enter sports as the Connection name. e. Enter C:\OpenEdge\WRK\sports3000.db as the Physical name. f. Enter localhost as the Host name. g. Enter in the Service/Port field. Note: This port number will be used to communicate with the database server and, therefore, must be the port on which the database, sports3000, is configured to run. h. Click Next. 4 i. On the Define a SQL connection page, ensure that you are adding a new SQL connection and then click Next. j. Retain the default settings on the Add SQL Connection Profile page and click Next. 4 Creating Progress OpenEdge Data Object Services

5 k. On the Define Database Server Configuration page, ensure that the Autostart database server option is selected and then click Finish. l. Click OK on the Preferences page. Creating Progress OpenEdge Data Object Services 5

6 Part 3 Setting up the PAS for OpenEdge instance In this part, you will add the servers view for the PAS for OpenEdge instance to the workspace. Then, you will configure the PAS for OpenEdge instance to work with the sports3000 database created and started in Part 1. Step Task 1. To open the Servers view: a. Select Window > Show View > Other. The Show View window appears. b. Expand Server and select Servers listed under it. c. Click OK. The Servers view is visible. 2. The list of servers is not displayed in the Servers view. To add the servers to the Servers view: a. Select Window > Preferences. 6 Creating Progress OpenEdge Data Object Services

7 b. Expand Progress OpenEdge > Server > OpenEdge Explorer Connections. The list of OpenEdge Explorer Connections appears. c. Double-click the OpenEdge Explorer connection that you want to use to open the Edit Connection Profile window. d. Ensure that you have specified the right credentials and parameters for OpenEdge Explorer and click Test Connection. After the test is successful, click Create Servers & Finish. e. On the Preferences page, click OK. The servers are listed in the Servers view. Creating Progress OpenEdge Data Object Services 7

8 3. To configure the oepas1 instance to work with the database: a. Double-click oepas1 in the Servers view. b. Click Open launch configuration. The Edit Configuration window appears. c. Select the Databases tab. d. Select the Show all button. e. Select sports connection that you created earlier. f. Click OK. 8 Creating Progress OpenEdge Data Object Services
