5 Welcome The Alchemy PUBLISHER family of products is translation memory software for professional translators, project managers and content authors who are tasked with creating and translating documentation or Web-based content. These tools help you reduce translation time and costs, increase end-user productivity and satisfaction and provide a progressive path as your content development needs change. What is a PUBLISHER project file (PFF)? Alchemy PUBLISHER stores documents in an object-oriented database called a Publisher Project File (PPF). This is a highly optimized database capable of storing any translated object. Alchemy PUBLISHER can process over 100+ different document types, including Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, XML, SGML, Win32/Win64x Software Applications, Text files and Database files. A project is made up of segments; the fundamental building block of its database schema. A segment contains at least one source language string and its equivalent language translation. A PUBLISHER project is also a Translation Memory (TM) and its content can be re-used so you never have to translate anything more than once. Next Generation TM A Publisher project file (PPF) differs substantially from traditional TMs such as TRADOS Translator Workbench, as it can store segments containing text, and graphical images, help pages, web sites,.net language assemblies and many other translated objects. This is why Alchemy PUBLISHER is ideally suited to handling the complexities associated with the localization of web sites, online help systems and technical publications. What is Alchemy Language Exchange? Alchemy Language Exchange/Express is a object-oriented translation memory that comes as an integral part of Alchemy PUBLISHER. It provides a high performance translation memory on your desktop PC. Alchemy Language Exchange differs substantially from traditional TM solutions. While traditional text-based TM solutions, such as SDL TRADOS, only store translated text segments, Alchemy Language Exchange stores this and much more. It stores layout information, font and formatting details and a full range of graphical objects such as screen shots, bitmaps and vector graphics. This makes Alchemy Language Exchange ideal as a translation memory for technical publications, web content and design rich document types such as sales brochures and other marketing materials.

6 How Alchemy PUBLISHER works Alchemy PUBLISHER is an application you use to analyze, translate and validate your technical publications. Your translations are tracked in Alchemy Language Exchange EXPRESS, a high performance TM solution. This advanced TM solution is built using Microsoft SQL Server and this is the database platform that is used to store all your translations on your desktop PC. 9 Quick Start Guide Ready, Set, Go Alchemy PUBLISHER is designed so that you can set it up quickly and start using it right away. The Product CD contains all the software components necessary to install Alchemy PUBLISHER on your desktop PC. The product consists of three basic components; Alchemy PUBLISHER 2.0, Alchemy Language Exchange/EXPRESS Edition and Microsoft SQL Server Express. These components work together to provide you with the most sophisticated and advanced TM solution for technical publications, web content and software applications. Stage 1: Product Installation Insert your Product CD into your CD drive and launch the setup.exe application. This will start the Alchemy PUBLISHER Installation application. Click the Install Alchemy PUBLISHER 2.0 button to start installing this application onto your desktop PC. On the Destination Folder page use the Browse button to select an installation folder. Click Next to accept the default installation folder. On the Ready to Install page, click Install to finish installing Alchemy PUBLISHER. On the Setup Progress page, you can monitor installation progress as setup proceeds.

10 You can now start using Alchemy PUBLISHER and translate all your technical publications, web content and software applications. If you'd like to install an advanced TM and use this on your projects, please now proceed to the second stage of the installation process. Product Activation When you first launch Alchemy PUBLISHER, it will run in evaluation mode. This mode is restricted in several features and should not be used when working on a live translation project. To switch Alchemy PUBLISHER into a fully enabled product you need to activate it using the Activation Expert. You will be prompted to activate Alchemy PUBLISHER when you launch it for the first time. Stage 2: Advanced TM Installation Alchemy Language Exchange is an advanced TM solution for technical publications, web content and software applications. It offers scalability, robustness and ease of use and is designed using the very latest and most reliable database technology, Microsoft SQL Server Express. In order to configure your desktop PC for Alchemy Language Exchange you must install Microsoft SQL Server Express. Once this is installed and configured you can then proceed and install Alchemy Language Exchange/EXPRESS. 10

11 Quick Start Guide Advanced TM Installation The first step in installing Alchemy Language Exchange is to configure your desktop PC to run Microsoft SQL Server Express. This is a high performance relational database solution that provides a reliable and scalable storage solution for all your translated materials. Installing Microsoft SQL Server Express SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. Insert your Alchemy PUBLISHER product CD in your drive and launch the setup.exe application. Select Install Microsoft SQL Server Express from the options presented on the screen. The Microsoft installer will launch and display a license agreement on the screen. The SQL Server Component Update runs, installing the software required prior to installing SQL Server Express. For more information about component requirements, click the Help button at the bottom of the page. Click Next. Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 is not installed when SQL Server Component Update runs, but SQL Server Express Setup requires.net Framework 2.0 to be installed prior to running the sqlexpr.exe. The Welcome to the Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard page appears. Click Next. On the System Configuration Check page, the computer is scanned for potential installation problems. To interrupt the scan, click Stop. To proceed with setup after the scan completes, click Next. It's important that all checks are successful and if any error messages are displayed on the screen you should investigate and resolve them before continuing with this installation. On the Registration Information page, enter information in the Name and Company text boxes. Click Next. Because SQL Server Express is free, there is no Product Key text box on this page. To simplify the installation process, select Hide advanced configuration options check box. This bypasses the Service Account, Collation Settings, Instance Name, and User Instances pages. On the Feature selection page, select all program features. Expand a feature to view its sub-features by clicking the "+" symbol. Click Next.

12 On the Instance Name page, select the Default instance for your installation. If you select Default instance, an existing default instance will be upgraded. Click Next. On the Authentication Mode page, specify the security mode used to connect to your instance of SQL Server. Select Mixed Mode Authentication. Enter and confirm a strong sa (System Administrator) logon password. Click Next. On the Configuration Options page, select Enable User Instances and Add Users to the SQL Administrator role options. This maximizes the flexibility of your installation and makes it secure. On the Error and Usage Report Setting page, select whether to turn on error reporting and usage reporting for SQL Server and its components. By default, error reporting is turned on. Click Next. On the Ready to Install page, click Install to finish installing SQL Server. On the Setup Progress page, you can monitor installation progress as setup proceeds. Click Next. On the Completing the Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard page, you can view the setup summary log by clicking the link provided on this page. To complete the SQL Server Installation Wizard, click Finish. It's important that all components of MS SQL Server Express are installed and configured correctly on your desktop PC before continuing with the installation of Alchemy PUBLISHER. You can verify this by checking any errors messages displayed on the screen when the installation wizard finishes. 12

13 Quick Start Guide Installing Alchemy Language Exchange Alchemy Language Exchange/EXPRESS is a high performance translation memory solution. It supports over 200 different file formats ranging from software applications, web documents and technical publication file formats. It is built on Microsoft SQL Server which needs to be installed and configured on your machine prior to installation. Insert your Alchemy PUBLISHER product CD in your drive and launch the setup.exe application. Select Install Alchemy Language Exchange/EXPRESS from the options displayed on the screen. On the Database Server page enter the database server name on which MS SQL Server is installed on. The database server name is made up of the name of your desktop PC (e.g. tonyod05) and the instance name of the SQL Express server on your desktop PC. It's vital to specify the correct database server name as if you incorrectly specify it here, Alchemy PUBLISHER may not be able to locate your translation memories on your desktop PC. On the Ready to Install page, click Install to start installing Alchemy Language Exchange/EXPRESS. On the Select Installation Address page, accept all the defaults and click Next. On the Configuration Settings page, accept all the defaults and click Next. On the Setup Progress page, you can monitor installation progress as setup proceeds. Click Finish.

14 Using Experts Alchemy PUBLISHER comes with three powerful experts to help you automate many of the manual tasks associated with analyzing, pre-translating and publishing translated materials. Analysis Expert Use the Analysis Expert to determine the level of re-use from previous translations and to calculate the cost of translating your project. Translate Expert Use the Translate Expert to pre-translate your files using translation memories. You can use virtually any industry standard translation memory ensuring that you never translate a sentence more than once! Clean Up Expert Use the Clean Up Expert to create translated target files and update your translation memories with the latest and most up-to-date translations, 14
