From 1917 Dutch Village has blossomed from the dreams of our grandfather, Harry Nelis, Sr. His early tulip farm grew into a Dutch Market to sell tulip bulbs along with some imported Dutch gifts and souvenirs. His market buildings were built in the style of 19th century Dutch architecture. Through the dreams and work of succeeding generations, the Dutch Market has grown into the Dutch Village, complete with houses, canals, farmhouse, barns, authentic Netherlands street organs, a carousel and many quaint shops. De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft) The beautiful Delftware shown in this catalog was produced by the De Porceleyne Fles (The Porcelain Jar) Company founded in Of the dozens of original 17th century pottery makers, the only Dutch delftware pottery still in continuous operation is De Porceleyne Fles. Early techniques involved firing brownish earthenware which was then covered with a white enamel, decorations were added, then a second firing sealed the finish. This produced an attractive, usable but somewhat brittle product. In the 19th century, new clay mixtures and techniques developed by De Porceleyne Fles improved delftware so that it was able to compete with the porcelain from new factories in Germany and England. It took decades to develop the best combination of body, color, glazes, kilns and firing methods. And most importantly, to form a team of highly skilled artists capable of making the special decorations under difficult conditions.
