Create eye-catching dimension. Multi-Pass applications of Metallic Dry Inks take the stunning visual effects to the next level. Operators can add up to two layers in an efficient workflow to create the look of a raised seal or enable an important element to pop right off the page. Create the look of a raised seal or enable an important element to pop right off the page. 11
Creating your files. 1 2 Setting up your Adobe InDesign file for printing with Metallic Dry Ink 1 In InDesign, add a new layer in the layers pallet for Metallic Dry Ink. a. Name the new layer Silver or Gold. 2 Add a new color in the swatches pallet and name it. We suggest using PMS 877C for Silver or PMS 871C for Gold. The name is case-sensitive and should be used exactly as shown here: Silver or Gold. a. Designate the Color Type as a CMYK Spot Color. 12
3a 3b 3c Creating masks for spot or flood effects in InDesign 3 Draw a shape or select text that will have the Metallic Dry Ink applied. Make sure all elements to print with metallic are situated on the metallic layer. a. Fill your shape with the new metallic color swatch. b. If the metallic element is sitting on top of a photograph or field of color and you want that background to show through (and potentially dull the appearance of your metallic ink), select Window > Output > Attributes > Overprint Fill. c. If you do not want the background to show through so the metallic appearance of your ink is maintained, select Window > Effects > Show Options > Knockout Group. 13
Creating your files. 1 3a 2 3b Creating graphics with Adobe Illustrator Vector graphics that are created in Illustrator can be placed into InDesign and designated to print with Metallic Dry Ink. 1 Add a new layer in the layers pallet for Metallic Dry Ink. 3 a. If the metallic element is sitting on top of a photograph or field of color and you want that background to show through (and potentially dull the appearance of your metallic ink), select Overprint Fill. b. If you do not want the background to show through so the metallic appearance of your ink is maintained, select Knockout Group. 14
2 3 Tinted effects in Adobe InDesign A tinted effect is created by layering two identical objects on top of each other. The objects on the top layer will print with Metallic Dry Ink allowing the color from the object below to show through. Follow the basic setup for the layer and Metallic Dry Ink swatch. 1 Place or create a vector graphic on the metallic layer. 2 Apply a color (Silver or Gold) to it. 3 To add a tint, select Window > Effects and adjust the opacity as desired. 4 Select Window > Output > Attributes > Overprint Fill. 15
Creating your files Creating raster effects with Adobe Photoshop There are several ways of creating masks with gradient fills, patterns, or soft faded edges in Photoshop. Using an existing image to highlight detailed areas 1 Open the photo you would like to enhance with Metallic Dry Ink. 2 Convert to grayscale > Image/Mode/Grayscale, and discard color information Convert to duotone > Image/ Mode/Duotone. a. Select Monotone. b. Click on Ink 1 and change the color to PMS 877C for Silver or PMS 871C for Gold. Note: It is important to use the same color you chose in your InDesign file for your metallic swatch. c. Name Ink 1 Silver or Gold. 4 Save as a new file and name it. Example: filename_metallic.psd. 5 Mask out any area you do not want to receive Metallic Dry Ink. 6 Now, resave your monotone Photoshop file as an EPS. Creating masks with soft or faded edges using the pen tool (Monotone option) 1 Open your image in Photoshop. 2 Using the pen tool, trace the image or draw a shape.
Select your path, feather the edge, use the eraser or gradient fill tool, etc. 4 Create a new layer and fill your shape with black. 5 Convert your file to Monotone, making sure to name Ink 1 the same as your metallic ink swatch in InDesign Silver (PMS 877C) or Gold (PMS 871C). 6 Delete your background layer. 7 Save your monotone file as an EPS. Creating a spot or alpha channel 1 Open the image to apply Metallic Dry Ink in Photoshop. 2 Create a new path or select a shape. 3 With your shape selected, add a New Spot Channel. a. Name the new spot channel the same name as your metallic ink swatch in InDesign Silver (PMS 877C) or Gold (PMS 871C). b. Select % value if desired. 4 Save as PSD or TIFF with spot color included. 5 Place into InDesign on the metallic layer. Note: This option may present a layering issue in InDesign since your base image and metallic area are part of the same image file. If you have additional design elements assigned to print with metallic inks on the same page, we recommend using the Monotone, EPS option verses the Spot Channel, PSD/TIFF option. To see your image in your PDF file, select Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview and click on Simulate Overprinting. 17
Creating your files Pulling it all together in Adobe InDesign Now that you have created your raster mask for metallic, you are ready to put it together. 1 Follow the set up instructions for InDesign on page Place your color image on a layer below your metallic layer. 3 Copy the image. 4 Paste in Place on the metallic layer Relink the file to your raster file filename_metallic.psd. 6 With your graphic still selected, go to Window > Effects and choose Multiply. This will enhance the metallic color you are highlighting. Exporting as a high-res PDF from InDesign It s important to choose the correct settings when saving a PDF for printing with Metallic Dry Inks. Follow the steps below to create a PDF preset for saving high-res PDFs right out of InDesign. 1 From the main menu, select: File > Adobe PDF Presets > Press Quality, and click Save. 2 Select General: Compatibility > and choose Acrobat 6. On the lower-right side, check: Create Acrobat Layers. 3 Select Compression: Color Images > Do Not Downsample. Compression > JPEG, Image Quality > Maximum. Choose the same for Grayscale Images. Monochrome Images > CCITT Group 4. 4 Set up Marks and Bleeds if desired.
Select Output: Color > No Color Conversion. Profile Inclusion Policy > Include All RGB and Tagged source CMYK Profiles. Click on Ink Manager and make sure the box for All Spots to Process is unchecked. 6 Click on Save Preset and name it. We suggest Xerox Digital Press Metallic. Checking your PDF 1 Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat Professional. 2 Select Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview. Check the selection for Simulate Overprinting. If your file is set up correctly, all areas designated in metallic should be visible and on a separate layer. If you mouse over metallic areas, the percentage should change. Designing for Multi-Pass application If you want to create the effect of dimension with Multi-Pass Metallic Dry Ink application, you ll create an additional PDF that isolates the desired metallic objects. 1 Duplicate the final InDesign file and save as filename_multipass. 2 In the duplicated file, remove all elements except for the objects to be printed using the Multi-Pass feature. You should have only Silver or Gold elements remaining, and they should be in the same position as the original file. 3 Create a high-res PDF of the Multi-Pass file. 4 Provide both the original high-res PDF and the Multi-Pass PDF for printing. 19
Digital Front End (DFE) and workflow. 1 The process for printing your file at each print server varies based on how the job was designed. Xerox FreeFlow Print Server When using Xerox FreeFlow Print Server, it is important that Metallic Dry Ink jobs are properly designed, prepped, and uploaded to the print server ready to print. Before printing any jobs, be sure that Specialty Dry Inks have been enabled. 1 At the Print Server, go to Set up, then System Preferences, and choose the Job Policy tab. 2 Under Colorants Supported, select the Specialty Dry Ink colors desired to have available. Once this is complete, the selected colorants will be available for every job. 20
3 2 1 Note: Only the enabled Specialty Dry Ink colors will appear in the Spot Colorant list. Note: Spot color mapping allows one file to be printed in any of the Specialty Dry Ink colors without altering the original file. Printing predefined files If the job has been designed such that it is predefined with a fifth color and named accurately (Silver or Gold, not case-sensitive), the process is brief. 1 Upload the file. 2 Set up the job s properties for stock and other variables. 3 On the Image Quality tab, choose the desired Specialty Dry Ink color from the Spot Colorant list. 4 Print the file. Mapping the fifth color If the file has been designed such that it is predefined with a fifth color but the naming is not already defined in the print server, you can add new names to the Look Up Table. 1 Upload the file. 2 In the Spot Color menu, click on Spot Color List, then choose the Color Mapping tab. 3 Add the name of the fifth color (case-sensitive) in the New Name Mapping window and choose the Specialty Dry Ink color in which it should print. This feature is useful for designing a file once with a generic spot color name, then printing the same file in any of the Specialty Dry Ink colors by mapping the spot color name to the desired color. 1 Jobs can be previewed in the Preview, Advanced Preview option (in the Job drop-down list) to see an accurate indication of the CMYK and Spot Colorant pixel value through the Eye Dropper. 21
Digital Front End (DFE) and workflow. 3 3 Note: When the file has been designed accurately, printing at the DFE is quick and easy. Note: Use this method to add Silver or Gold without changing the source file. Xerox EX-P 1000i Print Server Powered by Fiery When using the Xerox EX-P 1000i Print Server jobs, should be properly designed and prepped for maximum control. Some effects can be added at the print server. 22 Printing predefined files If the job has been designed such that it is predefined with a fifth color and named accurately (case-sensitive Silver or Gold), the process is brief. 1 Upload the file. 2 Go to Properties and set up the job. 3 Choose the Specialty Colors tab and select Apply for [ Silver or Gold ] spot color(s) and selected objects. Leave the boxes below unchecked. 4 Print the file. If the job is a CMYK file with no Specialty Colors defined, it is possible to add Metallic Dry Ink to all graphics, spot colors, or text. Note that full page flood and image options are disabled for Metallic Dry Inks. 1 Upload the file. 2 Go to Properties and set up the job. 3 Choose the Specialty Colors tab and select Apply for [ Silver or Gold ] spot color(s) and selected objects. Select the boxes below to indicate which elements will be treated with Specialty Dry Ink.
4 3 4 Note: Files designed to be printed with one Specialty Dry Ink can be treated with any Specialty Dry Ink by adding a new spot color. 4 Indicate whether the selection should be applied to all pages or a subset. 5 Print the file. Mapping the fifth color If the file has been designed such that it is predefined with a fifth color but the naming on the Specialty Color element(s) is unknown or not named exactly as Silver or Gold, begin with the Preflight option so you can determine the name used for the Specialty Color. 1 Right-click on the uploaded file and choose Preflight. 2 In the Preflight results, look under Spot Colors and note the name of the fifth color element(s). 3 Select Device Center back on the home screen and select the Specialty Color tab under Resources. Choose New on the Silver or Gold Look Up Table. 4 Add the name of the fifth color element exactly as it appeared in the Preflight results. 5 Go to Properties and set up the job. 6 Choose the Specialty Colors tab and select Apply for [ Silver or Gold ] spot color(s) and selected objects. Leave the boxes below unchecked. 7 Print the file. 23
Digital Front End (DFE) and workflow Note: Preview application of metallic tints and effects without changing the source file. Using the Fiery Image Enhance Visual Editor If the job contains photographs (raster images), it is possible to add metallic effects using Fiery Image Enhance Visual Editor (IEVE). 1 Right-click on the uploaded file and choose Image Enhance Visual Editor. 2 Scroll down to Special Effects Layer and turn the feature on. 3 You then need to select Type (for the type of Specialty Dry Ink you want to use (Clear, Silver, or Gold). 4 Make the desired adjustments under Style, Amplitude, Hue, Saturation, and Expand watching the impact of the changes on the preview image. 5 Close the IEVE window and save the Special Effects Layer and adjustments. 6 Go to Properties and set up the job. 7 Choose the Specialty Colors tab and select Apply for [ Silver or Gold ] spot color(s) and selected objects. Leave the boxes below unchecked. 8 Print the file. 24
3 Note: When designing for Multi-Pass, it is important that the isolated metallic objects align perfectly to the original file. 4 Multi-Pass application of Metallic Dry Inks For both print servers, Multi-Pass application of Metallic Dry Inks is a manual process. Preparing to print with Xerox FreeFlow Print Server As instructed in the design steps, start by creating an additional PDF that isolates the desired metallic objects. Preparing to print with Xerox EX-P 1000i Print Server Powered by Fiery Either create an additional PDF in the design phase, or isolate the specific separations containing Metallic Dry Inks using the Fiery ImageViewer. 1 Process and hold the file, then right click and duplicate the job. 2 Rename the duplicate job. 3 Right click the duplicate job and open ImageViewer. 4 Under Separations, uncheck the CMYK options so that only Silver or Gold is selected. 5 Save the changes and close the ImageViewer. 25
Digital Front End (DFE) and workflow. 3 Printing multiple layers of Metallic Dry Inks 1 Upload the original file and print. 2 Move the completed prints back to the appropriate feeding tray, paying careful attention to orientation. 3 Upload the additional file containing only the isolated metallic objects and print. The completed prints will have both files printed on one sheet, resulting in two layers of Metallic Dry Inks on the areas isolated by the design. 26
Troubleshooting and tips. Knockout FPO 35% Black 100% Silver 60% tint 40% tint Overprint Be careful with competing colors. Colors too close to Silver or Gold optically reduce the metallic look. The metallic layer needs to be perfectly aligned with the original image, so it is best to make both files the exact same height and width. Silver and Gold can act unpredictably when applied over CMYK, including dulling the flop index. Be sure to knock out CMYK elements below instead of putting Silver or Gold over CMYK. Applying Clear Dry Ink over Metallic Dry Inks is not recommended, as it reduces flop index, sparkle intensity, and sparkle area. For raster images imported from Photoshop, make sure the correct name has been assigned to the color in the Monotone menu. Names are case-sensitive and must match between all files. With raster files, creating multiple test images using different percentages for the metallic treatment allows you to generate a proof to determine which percentage gives you the desired results. Multi-Pass application is recommended with no more than two layers. Additional passes provide diminishing returns. Application to fine lines and small text is also not suggested because the increase in effect is minimal. If some areas print correctly but other parts have knocked out, make sure the metallic layer sits at the top of all other layers. Metallic Dry Ink elements placed on top of, or next to, light colors will have the most effect. The ink limit is 240% for CMYK and 260% for five colors, which is different than the standard four-color press. Keep this in mind when overprinting because the higher the build of CMYK, the less impact of the fifth color. 27
FAQs. Pewter (60% Silver multiply over 20C, 30M, 70Y, 15K) 100% Silver Can Metallic Dry Inks be used to achieve metallic effects other than Gold and Silver? Yes. By altering the color underneath the metallic layer, a variety of interesting metallic effects can be achieved, including pewter and bronze tones. Please note that with pewter and bronze tones, it is inadvisable to use <60% of silver or gold in these mixes. Are pages with Gold Dry Ink and Silver Dry Ink recyclable? Yes. Pages printed with Metallic Dry Inks are easily recycled. Which substrates can be used? The substrate capabilities are the same as your Xerox Color 800i/1000i Presses range. It is important to note that the surface texture and sheen of the paper affect the ink coverage. Smooth texture, matte, and dull coated papers tend to provide more impact and the best results. Please consult your print provider for more information. 28 Xerox_MetallicDryInksDesignGuide_4c_030915_SPG_FINAL.indd 28 3/9/15 11:55 AM
WHOLE BEANS What colors should I use to simulate Silver and Gold Metallic Dry Inks in CMYK process color? The Pantone targets for the Metallic Dry Inks are Pantone 877C for Silver and Pantone 871C for Gold. Do I need to adjust my speed or press settings for Metallic Dry Inks? No. The print server will automatically select the optimum press settings, while you continue to print at rated speeds. Metallic Dry Inks do not impact the impressive speed and performance of the Xerox Color 800i/1000i Presses. Can other software programs create metallic elements? Yes, as long as the program allows you to assign a named spot color to the metallic elements, Multiply that layer with color artwork on a layer below, and produce a layered, print resolution PDF. 29
Be more creative with Xerox Metallic Dry Inks. Metallic Dry Inks add creative effects that bring your prints to life and get your messages noticed.
