1 TechLines Technical Information Sheet November 30, 2017 Export to PDF from InDesign CS4 through CC Before you Export a PDF from InDesign, you will need to either download our PDF Export Preset and then load it into InDesign or create a PDF Export Preset by following the screenshots on the following pages. Download our setting by visiting: LOADING OUR PDF EXPORT PRESET To Load our Adobe PDF Preset, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets > Define... To Load our Adobe PDF Preset, choose: File > Adobe PDF Presets > Define... Once you have downloaded our PDF Preset, Open InDesign, then choose: File > Adobe PDF Presets > Define...Click on the Load... button and locate the PDF Preset Ripon Printers Export Settings.joboptions James Wamser x532 jamesw@riponprinters.com

2 CREATING A PDF EXPORT PRESET Open the Adobe PDF Presets dialog box (File > Adobe PDF Presets > Define...) Click on [PDF/X-4:2008], then click on the New... button. We base our setting on the PDF/X-4 standard, but modify it for our workflow. Click on [PDF/X-4:2008], then click on the New... button. Name your Profile. Typically, Spreads should not be checked, but this depends on your document and how it prints. If your document consists of multiple pages in a spread, (for example a brochure or gate-fold), then choose Spreads.

3 COMPRESSION Compression: None Crop Image Data to Frames By leaving this un-checked, we have the ability to make late-stage edits to your images, if needed. The one disadvantage is your PDF will most likely be significantly larger. Feel free to check this box to reduce file size - only if your document is built to final trim with 0.25 in bleed. Having.25 inch bleed, it gives us the option to adjust your page, if needed. For example, if type is too close to trim.

4 MARKS AND BLEED For Offset, enter.3125 in Bleed Be sure to include 0.25 in of bleed in your PDF. Having.25 inch bleed gives us the option to adjust your page, if needed. For example, if type is too close to trim. Note: If you do not build your page(s) to final trim size, we may need to reduce your pages. You will need to offset your registration marks even more and include more bleed. This is because as your page is reduced the registration marks could come into live copy area and the bleed will shrink along with the rest of the page

5 OUTPUT Color Conversion takes place when we process your PDF. If your entire job is going to print as CMYK, select All Spots to Process. If your job is going to print with a spot color, only include the colors your document requires in your swatches panel. This should prevent accidentally mapping a color incorrectly due to too many choices from the Ink Alias pull-down menu.

6 ADVANCED Enter 0% to allow for late-stage edits of text, if needed. This will increase your file size, so if you want to be responsible for making any type changes and then re-submitting new page(s), feel free to change it to100% Click OK to save the PDF Export Preset Click Done in the Adobe PDF Presets Dialog box To export a PDF using Ripon s PDF Preset, choose: File > Adobe PDF Presets > Ripon Printers Export Settings...

7 VIEWING YOUR PDF IN ACROBAT After Exporting your PDF, please take a moment and review it in Adobe Acrobat. In addition to making sure your document is built to final trim size, please check the following: Marks: Offset.3125 inches Bleed: We prefer.25 inches, with an min of.125 inches Live Area: Text must be at least.25 inches from trim Inks: Use the Output Preview Panel to verify you only have CMYK inks in your PDF, unless you are printing with one or more Spot Colors. The Output Preview Panel is located in the Print Production tools.
