Graphic Communication DTP Knowledge, understanding, recognition and interpretation of generic desktop publishing terms and techniques Higher Theory
Terminology Handles The small rectangles, or other icons, which surround a selected frame. Handles allow the frame to be resized, moved, or rotated independently of the other items on the DTP page. Colour Picking Selecting a colour that has already been used in the document. Usually associated with the icon: Textured fills Fills a selected area with a preset pattern, giving the effect of texture. Gradient Fills A colour fill that gradually changes from one colour to another across the surface of the shape. Alignment Positions of text lines on a page or column. Page/Paper Size
Drop Caps Drop caps are often seen at the beginning of novels, where the top of the first letter of the first word lines up with the top of the first sentence and drops down to the four or fifth sentence. Line-Spacing Line spacing is the space between each line in a paragraph. Cropping Cropping refers to the removal of the outer parts of an image. Usually associated with the icon: Text Wrap Text wrap is a feature that enables you to surround a picture or diagram with text. Flow Text Along a Path Text along a path allows you to create text which follows a predetermined or drawn line. Pull Quote A brief, attention-catching quotation taken from the main text of an article and used as a subheading or graphic feature.
Transparency A graphic image in which the background appears to be invisible Drop Shadow A drop shadow is a visual effect consisting of drawing that looks like the shadow of an object, giving the impression that the object is raised above the objects behind it. Creates depth. Justification Reverse A lighter typeface on a darker background is an example of knockout or reversed type. Crop Marks Crop marks, also known as trim marks, are lines printed in the corners of your publication's sheet or sheets of paper to show the printer where to trim the paper.
Page Layout It is important to get familiar with common terms and their respective layout features. The terms listed on the following examples are frequently used in DTP (desk top publishing).
