Installation & Activation There are two main steps to getting started with Revolution: Step 1 Installation: 1. Download all of the 5 Revolution RAR files from your account. Ensure all 5 RAR files are 100% downloaded before moving on to point 2 below. 2. Unpack the RAR files together using an unpacking program such as Winzip / WinRAR (if on PC) or The Unarchiver If on Mac. 3. After successfully unpacking the RAR files you will now see a single folder named Revolution, which contains five subfolders called Samples, Instruments, Library Data, Documentation, and Snapshots, as well as a Revoluton.nicnt file. Take note of where this folder is located because you will reference this location in the next step. It s very important that the file structure is maintained within the Revolution folder. Step 2- Activation: 1. Open Kontakt or Kontakt Free Player and Click the Browse button in the top left side of Kontakt s menu panel. Now navigate to the Libraries tab, and click the Add Library. Button 2. You will now be prompted to browse to the location in which the Revolution folder is located on your system. Navigate and choose the Revolution folder that you have previously unpacked (see Step 1 Installation above). It s important that you select the Revolution folder itself instead of any of the folders subfolders. 3. The final step is to activate Revolution using your product serial code. There is a small Activate button that will appear over Revolution in the Libraries tab within Kontakt. Clicking this button will bring up a new window that links to Service Center. Enter your serial number and address here. Your Revolution serial number will be sent to your address within 12 hours of purchasing Revolution. In the mean time you can use the instrument in 'Demo mode' You have now activated your serial code for Revolution and the instrument is ready to use! Now when you log into Service Center, you should see Revolution listed under your activated products Updating to Revolution 1.1 The Revolution 1.1 update requires the replacement of the following files Revolution.nkr - in the Samples folder Revolution.nkc - in the Samples folder The Instruments folder found in the main folder The Extras folder found in the main folder Batch Re-Save (recommended) Running a batch re-save is recommended for resolving any potential issues such as slow loading times or missing samples. 1. With Revolution loaded into Kontakt, click the Files menu at the top of Kontakt itself

Revolution Module A new instrument has been added to Revolution called Revolution Module. Revolution Module features the ability to select any drum voice or sound from Revolution Drums or Revolution Perc and play it individually. This is ideally suited for workflows that rely on playing individual drum sounds from a drum rack such as Ableton Live.* Revolution Module features the ability to learn the MIDI note triggering Revolution Module. Revolution Module features the ability to play the drum voice +/- 2 octaves *Revolution Module is an excellent instrument for adding the sound of Revolution to an already existing drum workflow. For many situations it is still advisable to use the full Revolution Drums and Revolution Perc Instruments as they will offer lower CPU and RAM usage than a full drum kit of Revolution Modules. Revolution LE A new instrument has been added to Revolution called Revolution LE. Revolution LE features the ability to play Revolution Drums in the simplest way possible for lower CPU and resource usage. Revolution LE is identical to Revolution Drums with the follow exceptions A smaller interface for compatibility with smaller screens and complex workflows. No master bus effects for less CPU load and a focused workflow towards multiple outputs. No sequencer for less CPU load and a focused workflow towards external sequencing.

Introduction Thank you for purchasing Revolution, the most authentic virtual drum machine ever created! Here you ll find documentation for everything you need to get started. Revolution features two main pages (Drum Page & Sequencer Page), along with graphically dynamic pages for Drum Modules FX and Pattern Browser. These pages are the backbone of Revolution s powerful interface - They host intuitive controls and functions for sculpting, editing and processing drum sounds and sequencer patterns. You ll find a detailed overview of each page below: 6

Drum Page The Drum Page allows for editing all 14 Drum Voices of Revolution. It features the following areas which we will discuss in detail below Instrument Header Drum Mixer Drum Sampler Controls Classic Drum Sequencer Drum Voice Controls Insert Effects Master Effects Send Effects 7

Instrument Header The Instrument Header section is one of two sections which are available on both the Drum and Sequencer page along with the Classic Drum Sequencer section. MIDI (MIDI Build) - This control triggers the MIDI Build Process which allows you to export a MIDI Sequence of the currently selected Sequence to your host or DAW. o o o (MIDI Drag and Drop) - After the MIDI Build Process has been engaged clicking and dragging from this area will export a MIDI sequence useful for sequencing in your host or DAW. Please note that any changes to the Sequencer will require the MIDI Build Process to be retriggered. Sequence Pattern - Displays a drop down menu for switching the currently selected Sequence Pattern. Alternatively sequences can be selected by sending MIDI notes between the range F2 to E3 to the instrument. Sequence Chase - When enabled the Classic Sequencer range will automatically change based on the current Sequence Step. Global Accent - This control increases the Volume of the Global Accent. When this control is at it's maximum value there will be a 6dB boost applied to Globally Accented Steps. When at it's minimum value no volume boost applied to the Globally Accented Steps. Sequence Step - Add or removes a Drum Note on the corresponding step. Yellow lights represent a velocity of 64 and Red lights represent a velocity of 127. Sequencer Rate - Sets the Synchronized Rate of the Sequencer between 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 notes. Sequencer Shuffle - This control increases the shuffle time of the Sequencer. Shuffle is based on dividing two steps by a triplet subdivisions rather than on dividing two steps perfectly in half. In practice this means increasing the Shuffle value delays every second Step to push it closer to the following one. Sequence Chase - When enabled the Classic Sequencer range will automatically change based on the current Sequence Step. Page 1 will be displayed for Steps 1-16 and Page 2 will be displayed for Steps Disabling this feature allows you to edit the selected Sequence range without automatically changing. The state of this control is displayed in the Instrument Header. Classic Sequencer Page - This control switches the Classic Sequencer from displaying Steps 1-16 or steps On screen this is displayed between A or B. 13

Drum Voice Controls Loading Drum Voices Each Drum Voice has a different collection of Drum Machine modes which are available. These depend on what drum sounds the original machines had available. By clicking on the name of the Drum Machine mode (ie: RV-909) you will be presented with a drop down menu which allows you to select the desired drum machine. Doing this will dynamically remove and load only the necessary samples for that drum voice into RAM. Alternatively you can also cycle through available Drum Machine modes by navigating with the left and right arrows directly to right of the Drum Machine name. The Drum Voice control section displays all of the controls sampled from the original drum machines. None of the sounds in this section are created through DSP but have been recorded from high quality recordings of the original machines. In total Revolution features over 41,000 unique samples to give the instrument a truly analog sound. Each Drum Voice has the ability to virtually load the sound of one of 14 Drum Machine styles modelled after highly sought after and rare Analog and Digital Drum machines. 14

Character The most powerful control in this section is the Character knob which is the last of the four controls in the centre of this section. This control transforms the sound of the drum machine to a virtual representation of the original machine in various different sound styles. Depending on the selected character the first three analog controls will change to controls found on the original controls. These sound styles include Analog - The original drum machine sound sampled through a high quality and direct signal path with random round robin (alternating) samples to preserve the unique character of the original instrument. Digital - The original drum machine sound sampled through a high quality and direct signal path. Since Digital Drum machines use static samples this mode does not feature round robin samples. Tape - The original drum machine resampled and recorded from a multitrack Studer A820 Tape Machine. The Tape mode is available in 1-3 levels with increasing levels of saturation. S A lofi digital resampled version of the sound. These samples have been sped up five semitones and lowered to 16-bit / 26.04KHz. The samples are then lowered back to their original pitch using the Kontakt S1200 sampling engine. SP1200* - The original drum machine resampled to a vintage SP1200 sampler and recorded back at all 16 pitch levels. This sampler is known for it s gritty and lofi ringing character. SP12* - The original drum machine resampled to a vintage SP12 sampler and recorded back at all 16 pitch levels. This sampler is a precursor to the know SP1200 and although lesser known is similar in sound character. S950* - The original drum machine resampled to a vintage S950 sampler and recorded back at all 16 pitch levels. This sampler is known for it s lofi and filtered character. Driven / Mastered - The original drum machine resampled through various highend and boutique hardware. Biscuit - The original drum machine resampled through a hardware effect processor which features 8-bit digital distortion processing and analog resonant filters. This character style is present in the RV-606 mode only. Crushed - The original drum machine resampled through tape and tube processors to get a heavily saturated form of analog distortion. This character style is present in the RV-606 mode only. * These character styles features a GRIT mode which compensates for the pitch changes in resampling by digitally resampling back in Kontakt. This allows for maintaining the pitch of the original sample while experimenting with the extreme aliasing and distortion present in resampling through vintage samplers. 15

Voice Controls Retrigger - When selected the voice will not overlap when playing back samples by automatically fading out all sounds on this voice. Choke Group - Allows you to select between 1 of 16 Choke Groups for the selected Drum Voice. Drum Voices which are assigned to the same Choke Group will automatically cancel the audio of all other Drums in the same Group. Voice Select - This is a drop down menu which appears as the name of the instrument in the top right hand corner. This varies per drum type and allows you to select different versions of the drum voice. This includes variations such as closed / open hihat or various percussion instruments. Not available for the Bass Drum and Snare Drum Voices. External Output - This control allows routing of the corresponding Drum Channel to an External Output or Master Output. See page 27 for more information on setting up Revolution for multi output. Multi Output - This is a square icon to the right of the External Output menu. When Selected all Drum Channels will automatically be routed to their own output. When deselected all Drum Channels will be routed to the Master Output. See page 27 for more information on setting up Revolution for multi output. 16

Convolution Reverb Unlike conventional digital reverbs which use an algorithms to create the sound Revolution uses Impulse Responses which are samples of real reverb. These were recorded in a wide variety of studios using some of the best rooms, analog and digital hardware reverbs available and processed with vintage Transistor and Tube EQs. This was achieved by specialized test tones into the room or reverb unit and recording the sound. This recording was then processed to create an Impulse Response, or IR file, which could be used to recreate the actual sound of the reverb within the instrument. There are a total 160 included Impulse responses. Below is a comprehensive list of all the Impulse Responses included with Revolution. # Reverb Source - Patch Name Length Channels 1 Studio A - P TL SDC 3.00s Stereo 2 Studio A - P Ribbon 3.00s Stereo 3 Studio A - P1 - C12 Tube 2.85s Mono 4 Studio A - P TL SDC 3.00s Stereo 5 Studio A - P Ribbon 3.00s Stereo 6 Studio A - P2 - C12 Tube 3.00s Mono 7 Studio A - P TL SDC 3.00s Stereo 8 Studio A - P Ribbon 3.00s Stereo 9 Studio A - P TL SDC 3.00s Stereo 20

Sequencer Page Almost all functions of Revolution can be accomplished from the Drum Page and with a MIDI controller however the instrument also features a Global Sequencer page for a simplified and modern workflow. Global Accent and Slop Sequence Accent - Displays the Global Accent state for corresponding step. This is displayed a rectangle light above the Sequence Step. When activated every drum on the corresponding step will be increased between no accent to 6.0dB. This value can be set with the Global Accent Value. This is a mirror of the Sequence Accent on the Classic Step Sequencer. Sequencer Slop - This randomizes the Global Slop value of each Sequence Step. This value can be offset on individual steps by using the Slop Step 1-32 Controls above the Sequence Lanes. Sequence Slop - This controls the Flam Time or 'Slop' for Step 1. Positive Values cause a delay between each step from Kick Drum 2 to Percussion 4. Negative Values cause a delay between each step from Percussion 4 to the Kick Drum 2. Kick Drum 1 is not effected by 26

this control. Global Sequencer Drum Select - This control selects the corresponding Drum Channel for editing. When Auto Play is enabled this control will trigger the sound of the Drum Voice. Mute - Mutes the Output of the corresponding Drum Channel. Solo - Solos the Output of the corresponding Drum Channel. Sequence Lane - This is a 32 Step Sequence Lane which allows for drawing per step velocity for the corresponding Sequence Pattern. Unlike the Classic Step Sequencer which has two values this lane allows fine tuning and drawing of all 127 velocity levels. By using key commands these lanes take on secondary functions. Command / Control - Clears the selected Sequence Lane. Option / Alt - Cycles through a collection of easy presets for the selected pattern. Shift + Option / Alt - Randomizes the selected Sequence Lane. Sequencer Options Sequence Copy - Copies the currently selected Sequence to memory. When enabled the current Sequence Pattern will be copied to memory and replace the next selected Sequence Pattern. Duplicate Sequence - When the Sequence Length is less than 32 Steps the current Sequence will be duplicated until it is double it's current length or there are no available steps remaining. Sequence Clear - When pressed once all Sequence Data for the currently selected Drum Channel will be deleted. When consecutively Pressed three times all Sequence Data will be erased Globally. Sequence Length When selected the Length of the Sequencer is set to 1 Step in Length. This is displayed as the number 1 through 32. While option/alt is held on the keyboard and one of these buttons is selected the sequence will be reordered so the selected step will become the first step of the sequence. This is a useful feature when used with Sequencer Record and you inadvertently start recording on a step other than step 1. Alternatively this can also be useful for creative experimentation along with the Sequence Lane key commands. 27

DAW Presets Revolution comes with easy starting point presets for Logic Pro X , Ableton Live and Maschine 2.5. All of these can be found in the Extras folder. Logic Pro X Integration with Logic Pro X includes a.patch file which can be used for opening Logic Pro X in a multi Output configuration with 14 aux tracks in a summing stack. To install this, move Revolution.patch file to anywhere inside the following folder ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches/Instruments After this has been placed here do the following 1. If you haven t done so first restart Logic 2. After opening Logic again create a new Software Instrument Track. 3. Open the browser by pressing the browser icon. 4. Navigate to User Patches and select Revolution from the location you placed it 28

Ableton Live Integration with Ableton Live 9 includes a.adg file with Revolution mapped inside of a single Drum Rack*. Installation is as simple as dragging and dropping the.adg file from Ableton Live 9 folder in the Extras folder of Revolution into your Ableton Project. For long term usage it is recommended to save this.adg file to a location within your Ableton Live User library. *Please not that some users may experience a bug between Kontakt and Ableton Live which requires you to set your default output setup as the multi output template included with Revolution. Please note this will not effect your ability to use other Kontakt instruments but will automatically use multiple outputs in any Kontakt instrument by default. You can do this by following the instructions listed on Page

Maschine Integration with Maschine 2 is included in the form of built in NKS integration and a group preset for routing to multi outputs. After installing Revolution it will appear in your browser under the category Drums & Percussion. Installation of Maschine and it s presets is completely automatic and native to Maschine. To install the Revolution Maschine group you can drag and drop the Revolution.mxgrp file from Revolution s extra folder into Maschine on an empty group. For long term use you can save this group preset to your user library for recall later. 30

Multi Output Routing Revolution can be configured for multi-output so Drum Voices can appear as tracks in your DAW. For users familiar with Kontakt this can be setup in the standard method used for creating multiple outputs. For users who are new to Kontakt we have created a simplified approach for getting started. Please note as well that using multiple outputs will bypass the master effects. 1. Navigate to the Revolution folder and go to the Output Config folder. 2. Here you can open the Kontakt Multi Output Config.nkm file 3. This will open Kontakt with 16 stereo outputs. From here go to File (The disk icon) and select Outputs 4. This will reveal the Output window and show the routing of the 16 channels available from loading this Multi-Output instrument. From here select Presets / Batch Configuration and Save output section preset as. A dialog will appear asking you where you would like to save the preset. You can give it a name and save it in the default location. 5. Each time you want to use Revolution with Multiple-Outputs you can now select this preset and you will have 16 stereo outputs available. Please note that in order to make Kontakt see these outputs after initially loading an instrument you must first restart the engine by clicking the exclamation logo in the top right hand corner. 6. If you would like to make this the default behaviour anytime you open a Kontakt instrument, wether it s Revolution or not, you can select Presets / Batch Configuration and then Save Current Output section state as default for -> All Formats. 31

NKS Integration Native Kontrol Standard (NKS) is Native Instruments extended plug-in format for all virtual instrument developers. NKS allows for intuitive and seamless interaction between plug-in instruments and KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE hardware. Revolution features a well thought and thorough integration for the NKS plug-in format. Key Ranges A. Classic Sequencer Range (C-1 - D#0) - These 16 keys display the sequence pattern for the currently selected Drum Voice. Depending on wether the Sequencer Page is set to Page A or B these keys will display steps 1-16 or Along with providing sequence display these keys can also be used to turn steps on and off with support for velocity sensitivity. The visual colour of these keys will change depending on the drum voice which is selected. In the above image this key range is cyan because the selected Drum Voice is Hihat 1. When the Sequence Pattern is less than 32 steps disabled steps will not be coloured. B. Sequencer Navigation Controls (E0 - G#0) - These 5 keys are used for adjusting the navigation controls of the Step Sequencer. E0 : Step Length - While this note is held pressing a key in the Step Sequencer Range (C-1 - D#0) will set that key to be the last step in the Sequence Pattern. F0 : Pattern Duplicate - When this key is pressed, and the Sequence Length is less than 32 Steps, the current Sequence will be duplicated until it is double it's current length or there are no available steps remaining. This has the same function as pressing the onscreen duplicate button. F#0 : Sequencer Page 1 - When this key is pressed the Classic Sequencer will display steps G0 : Sequencer Page 2 - When this key is pressed the Classic Sequencer will display steps G#0 : Sequencer Chase - When this key is pressed the Sequencer range will automatically change based on the current Sequence Step. Page 1 will be displayed for Steps 1-16 and Page 2 will be displayed for Steps Disabling this feature allows you to edit the selected Sequence range without automatically changing. This has the same function as pressing the onscreen Sequencer Chase button. 32

C. Play Note Range (C1 - E2) - This range of keys is used for playing back the Drum Voices of Revolution or for sequencing in your host. Bass Drum 1 : C1 = Red Bass Drum 2 : C2 = Red Snare Drum 1 : D1 = Warm Yellow Snare Drum 2 : E1 = Warm Yellow Tom 1 : F1 = Orange Tom 2 : G1 = Orange Tom 3 : A1 = Orange Hihat 1 : F#1 = Cyan Hihat 2 : G#1 = Cyan Hihat 3 : A#1 = Cyan Cymbal 1 : C#2 = Mint Green Cymbal 2 : D#2 = Mint Green Perc 1 : C#1 = Orange Perc 2 : D#1 = Orange Revolution Perc differs from Revolution Drums by assigning the 14 available Drum Voices chromatically from C1 to B1. Revolution Perc also uses an alternate colour scheme to differentiate the Percussion that is assigned to each voice. Off = Inactive Rim Shot = Red Cowbell = Orange Clave = Warm Yellow Hand Clap = Yellow Tambourine = Lime Shakers = Green Conga = Mint Bongo = Cyan Timbale = Turquoise Agogo = Blue Guiro = Plum Whistle = Purple Chimes = Fuchsia E2 : MIDI Select - When this key is pressed MIDI Select will be toggled on and off. When enabled playing a MIDI note will automatically selected the assigned Drum Channel. 33

D. Pattern Select Range (F2 - E3) - These 12 keys are used for selecting Sequence Patterns 1 through 12. The currently select pattern will be set to the note on position. E. Sequencer Options Range (F3 - B3) - These 7 keys are used to control the following sequencer functions G3 : Sequencer Record - This key toggles the Sequencer Record button. When enabled live MIDI input will be recorded to the currently selected Sequence. Visual feedback is provided and this key will blink to let you know Sequencer Record has been enabled. G#3 : Sequencer Reverse - When pressed this key momentarily reverses the sequencer position. When released the Sequence Step returns to it s expected position. This can be helpful for live performances and jamming with the sequence. Especially useful for creating impromptu drum fills at key moments. A3 : Sequencer Copy - This key toggles the Sequencer Copy button. When enabled the current Sequence Pattern will be copied to memory and replace the next selected Sequence Pattern. A#3 : Sequencer Stutter - When pressed this key momentarily causes the sequencer position to repeat or stutter over the current step. When released the Sequence Step returns to it s expected position.this can be helpful for live performances and jamming with the sequence. Especially useful for creating tension and builds along with live automating the master filter. B3 : Erase Step - While held, pressing a MIDI note assigned to a Drum Voice will erase any notes on the current step. This can be used for erasing sections of a pattern in real time. Plug-in Panel Revolution features 16 pages of mapped controls which are exposed to the controls of Maschine hardware and Komplete S-Series keyboards. Many of these controls are effected by the selected Drum Voice. This allows you to control many more parameters than would be possible in a conventional method. 39 Troubleshooting Revolution is stuck at the LOADING screen? This screen only appears when Kontakt cannot initialize or startup. Commonly this can be the case if your DAW or host has not completed it s startup sequence. Some of the common ways this can happen in different DAWS are as follows 1. The audio driver is not enabled or has been set to an inactive audio device. This can happen with some audio devices, such as the UA Apollo, when it is selected but not physically connected. 2. The DAW has entered a power safe mode. This will happen with Logic Pro when used with a MacBook that has been left idle on battery power. 3. The power button or audio device enable button has been set to off on your DAW. Below are three images of what this will look like in Ableton, Logic and Maschine

Revolution does not play when I press play in my DAW? Revolution features a sync play button. When this is enabled pressing playing in your DAW will automatically start play in Revolution. This is located at the bottom left next to the play button. I'm confused as to how to save my pattern presets in the Library. When I navigate to Users, name the file and save it, it does not appear in the Users list? After saving a pattern you need to restart Kontakt for your patterns to appear in the browser. The patterns should also be saved in this location "/Revolution/Data/Patterns/2 User After doing this the next time Revolution is loaded up it will appear in the browser.
