Installation & Activation There are two main steps to getting started with Evolution: Step 1 - Installation: 1. Download all 3 Evolution RAR files from your account. Ensure all 3 RAR files are 100% downloaded before moving on to point 2 below. 2. Unpack the RAR files together using an unpacking program such as Winzip / WinRAR (if on PC) or The Unarchiver If on Mac. 3. After successfully unpacking the RAR files you should now see a single folder named Evolution, which should be around 5GB (or slightly larger) in size. Take note of where this folder is located because you will reference this location in the next step. It is very important that the file structure is maintained within the Evolution folder. If you do not own Kontakt 5, you will need to install the free Native Instruments Kontakt Player which you can download here - Kontakt Player Download Link Step 2 - Activation: 1. Open Kontakt or Kontakt Free Player and navigate to the Libraries tab in the top left corner of Kontakt. Now click the Manage Libraries button directly underneath this. Native Access will now automatically launch. 2. Once logged in to Native Access, click the Add a serial header at the top left of the menu. You will now be prompted to enter your Evolution serial number. Copy and paste your Evolution serial into this box and then click the + Add Serial button. (Your serial number will be sent to your address automatically after purchasing Evolution. It is also available in your account on our website) 3. After entering your serial number, you will now be prompted to browse to the Evolution folder. Simply click the Browse button on this page and navigate to the Evolution folder that you have previously unpacked (see Step 1 Installation above). It is important that you select the Evolution folder itself and not any of the folders subfolders. Now click Open or Select Folder (if on PC). 4. Once you have followed these steps, Evolution should now be installed correctly in Kontakt s Libraries tab. To make sure it appears as a pane in the libraries tab, you may need to refresh the tab in Kontakt by clicking the refresh icon to the left of the Manage Libraries button. Please note: We highly recommend updating to the latest version of Kontakt / Kontakt 5 Player from within Native Access before activating Evolution. 4

Batch Re-Save Running a batch re-save after installing Evolution is highly recommended to speed up load times: 1. With Evolution loaded into Kontakt, click the Disk / File Icon at the top of Kontakt itself. 2. Select Batch re-save 3. Confirm the warning message by pressing Yes 4. Navigate and Select the main Evolution folder. Be sure to choose the same Evolution folder you referenced before when adding Evolution as a library within Kontakt. 5. Done. 7 Introduction Here you ll find documentation for everything needed to get started with Evolution. Evolution features three main pages (XY Pad Page, Mix Page & Sequencer Page), along with graphically dynamic pages for Drum Voice Controls, FX Sequencing, Drum Layering, Pattern Browsing, Effects, Macros and more. These pages are the core of Evolution s powerful engine - They host intuitive controls, parameters and functions for designing, layering, editing and processing drum sounds and creative sequencer patterns. Once installed, as per the instructions on Page 4, you will find 4 separate instruments in Evolution s Library Brower: Evolution (Main instrument) Evolution - Tape 1 Evolution - Tape 2 Evolution - Tape 3 Each of the instruments are completely identical in functionality; the only difference being that the Tape labelled instruments feature Analogue Tape Processed versions of Evolution s expansive Sound Library. Tape 1 being most subtle, and Tape 3 being most saturated. You ll find a detailed overview of each instrument page / section overleaf: 7

Mix Page - Overview Evolution: Mix Page The Mix Page is the heart of Evolution s powerful editing and sound sculpting engine. It allows you to deeply edit, sculpt and mix each of Evolution s 12 Drum Voices and Layers independently. It features the following areas which we will discuss in detail overleaf: Instrument Header Drum Selector Drum Voice Controls Insert Effects Master Effects Send Effects Drum Mixer Classic Drum Sequencer Sequencer Controls 8

Mix Page - Drum Selector Evolution: Drum Selector Evolution s Drum Selector is a graphically dynamic sound browser and visual display. It allows you to intuitively load any sound from Evolution s powerful sound library into any of the 12 drum voices. (See Drum Mixer section for how to select drum voices) Furthermore, each of the 12 drum voices has 3 independent Drum Engines - allowing you to load multiple sounds into each drum voice. These 3 engines are completely responsive, and make it possible to efficiently layer, edit, modulate, effect, mangle and mix each layer completely independent of one another. This introduces endless creative layering possibilities and sound design capabilities. Drum Engines Evolution: Drum Engines Evolution boasts 3 unique Drum Engines, each of which is accessed by clicking one of three Tabs: Drum - When selected, this will highlight yellow and indicates that you are currently viewing and editing the Drum engine. The Drum Type / Sub Bank buttons to the right of this will now dynamically show the corresponding available Drum Type / Sub Banks for this layer. Furthermore, the Drum Voice Controls will now reflect and control the Drum engine. Transient - When highlighted yellow, this indicates that you are currently viewing and editing the Transient engine. The Drum Type / Sub Bank buttons to the right of this will now dynamically show the corresponding available Drum Type / Sub Banks for this layer. Furthermore, the Drum Voice Controls will now reflect and control the Transient engine. Layer - When highlighted yellow, this indicates that you are currently viewing and editing the Layer engine. The Drum Type / Sub Bank buttons to the right of this will now dynamically show the corresponding available Drum Type / Sub Banks for this layer. 25 Convolution Reverb Evolution: Capturing Impulse Responses Unlike conventional digital reverbs which use algorithms to digitally re-create a reverb effect, Evolution uses Impulse Responses, which are samples / snapshots of real reverb and spaces. The world-class Impulses included in Evolution were captured in a wide variety of studios; using some of the best drum rooms, analog and digital hardware reverbs available, and processed with vintage Transistor and Tube EQs. This was achieved by sending specialized test tones into the room or reverb unit and capturing the sound. These recordings were then processed to create an Impulse Response, or IR file, which is used to recreate the actual sound of the reverb within the instrument. A total of 189 Impulse responses are included. Below is a comprehensive list of all the Impulse Responses included within Evolution: Reverb Source - Patch Name Length Channels 1. 30 Mix Page - Drum Mixer Evolution: Drum Mixer Evolution s Mixer is where you ll select which Drum Voice to edit, mix all 12 Drum Voices, apply Pan, send Drum Voices to Reverb / Delay Sends, Route Drum Voices to Outputs and more The Drum Mixer contains a dedicated Channel Strip for each of Evolution s 12 Drum Voices. The following controls can be adjusted independently for each Drum Voice: Drum Select - Clicking the Drum Type label at the top of any channel will select the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel for editing. The selected Voice / Channel is indicated by a Pink Line below the Drum Type name. Once selected, all Drum Voice Controls above will now affect this selected Drum Voice / Drum Channel. When Auto Play is enabled, selecting a Drum Voice / Drum Channel will also trigger the sound of the Drum Voice. Volume - The Slider directly to the right of the Volume Meter controls the Output Volume of the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel. Pan - Controls the Stereo Pan of the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel. Delay Send - Controls the Delay Send Level of the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel. Delay Select - Switches the corresponding Send between Delay 1 and Delay 2. This is displayed as the text DLY1 or DLY2. Reverb Send - Controls the Reverb Send Level of the corresponding Drum Voice/ Drum Channel. Reverb Select - Switches the corresponding Reverb Send between Reverb 1 and Reverb 2. This is displayed as the text REV1 or REV2. Mute - Mutes the Output of the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel. Solo - Solos the Output of the corresponding Drum Voice / Drum Channel. Retrigger - When enabled, the Drum Voice will not overlap when triggering sounds. Multi Output - This is a Blue Bulb directly to the right of the Multi Out text above the Drum Mixer. When Selected all Drum Channels will automatically be routed to their own output. When deselected all Drum Channels will be routed to the Master Output. See overleaf for more information on setting up Evolution for Multi Output. Multi Output Menu - This control / drop-down menu allows you to route the corresponding Drum Voice to one of 16 External Outputs or the Master Output. 30

Keyboard Pitch Mode - When enabled, the key range between C4 and C6 will play the currently selected Drum Voice chromatically. Pitch Mode also works with Sequencer MIDI input to record pitch changes into Evolution s Sequencer Pitch Lane in real time. Multi Output Routing Evolution can be configured for multi-output, so that Drum Voices can appear on separate tracks in your DAW Mixer. For users familiar with Kontakt, this can be setup in the standard method used for creating multiple outputs. For users who are new to Kontakt, we have created a simplified approach for getting started. Please Note: Using multiple outputs will bypass the Master Effects. To configure Multi Output Routing: (First close all instances of Evolution.) 1. Navigate to the Main Evolution folder on your computer and go to the Extras folder. 2. Here you can open the Kontakt Multi Output Config.nkm file. 3. This will open Kontakt with 16 stereo outputs. From here go to the Workspace menu (This is the icon at the very top of Kontakt to the right of the 'cog' icon). Now select Outputs from this drop-down menu. 4. This will reveal the Output window and show the routing of the 16 channels available from loading this Multi-Output instrument. From here select Presets / Batch Configuration and Save output section preset as.... A dialog will appear asking you where you would like to save the preset. You can give it a name and save it in the default location. 5. Open the menu Presets / Batch Configuration again, and now click Save current output section state as default for -> All Formats. Now restart Kontakt in order for the changes to be configured. Point 5 is very important. 31

Classic Drum Sequencer Evolution: Classic Drum Sequencer The Classic Drum Sequencer is available on every page in Evolution. It mirrors Evolution s main graphic Sequencer Page and allows you to easily sequence drums whilst on any page of the instrument. Adding steps here will automatically add steps on the main Sequencer Page and vice versa. Classic Sequencer Steps Evolution: Classic Sequencer Steps Clicking on any step button will add or remove a Drum Note on the corresponding step. Clicking once will show a Yellow light which represents a velocity of 64, and clicking twice will show a Red light which represents a velocity of 127. Clicking again once a step light is Red will remove that step. Sequencer Transport Controls Evolution: Sequencer Transport Controls Sequencer Play - When the Sequencer is enabled, pressing this button will begin Playback. Additionally, the Play button can be triggered by sending MIDI note C-1 to the instrument. Sequencer Stop - Pressing this button will stop the Sequencer. Sequencer Host Synchronization - When enabled, Starting / Stopping playback in your DAW / Host will start and stop playback on the Sequencer. Sequencer Record - When enabled, live MIDI input will be recorded to the currently selected Sequence. Sequencer Global Controls Evolution: Sequencer Global Controls Evolution features a number of Global Sequencer Controls, all of which are displayed via a graphically dynamic display screen and accessed using the 7 buttons underneath. The display screen will show a different set of controls depending on which button is pressed: 32

Pattern - Displays numbers 1-12 in the display screen for switching the currently selected Sequence Pattern. Alternatively, sequences can be selected by sending MIDI notes within the range of F2 to E3 to the instrument. Pattern Loop Mode: Sequence Pattern Start - Allows one to set the first step in the Sequence Pattern on which Sequence playback will begin. Pattern Loop Mode: Sequence Pattern End - Allows one to set the last step in the Sequence Pattern afterwhich Sequencer playback will return to the beginning of the pattern. Sequencer Rate - Sets the Synchronized Rate of the Sequencer between 1/1 and 1/112. Sequencer Swing - This control increases the Swing / Shuffle time of the Sequencer. Swing is based on dividing two steps by a triplet subdivision rather than on dividing two steps perfectly in half. In practice this means increasing the Swing value delays every second Step to push it closer to the following one. Clicking the INV button in the display screen switches this function to Shuffle. Global Accent - Displays the Global Accent state for corresponding step. This is displayed as a number (which corresponds to the Step Number) in the display screen. Clicking a number will highlight it and apply the Global Accent to this step. When activated, every drum on the corresponding step will be increased between negative 6.0db accent to +6.0dB. This value can be set with the Global Accent Slider on the main Sequencer Page. Global MIDI Controls Evolution: Global MIDI Controls The footer of Evolution hosts the instruments Global MIDI Controls. This area is used for MIDI Drag & Drop, Auto Play, MIDI Select and for accessing the Options page. MIDI Export / Drag & Drop Clicking this button will build an exportable MIDI sequence of the current Sequencer Pattern. Once the MIDI build process has completed, this button will turn Green. You can now click and drag from this area to export a MIDI sequence to your DAW. This is very useful if you prefer to sequence directly in your host or DAW. Please note that any changes to the Sequencer will require the MIDI Build Process to be retriggered. Auto Play - When enabled, selecting a Drum Channel will automatically play its associated Drum Voice. MIDI Select - When enabled, playing a MIDI note within the range C1-B1 will automatically select the assigned Drum Channel / Drum Voice. 33

NKS Colour Guide Clicking the Colour button will enable / disable NKS colours for all waveforms, Drum Mixer meters and Sequencer Lanes. 34

XY Pad Page Evolution: XY Pad Page Evolution s powerful XY Pad Page is located by pressing the X+Y navigation button found at the top left the left-hand side of the Instrument Header. The XY Pad page is home to Evolution s powerful Macro System and XY Pad. It allows you to visually layer drums and intuitively assign Macro Controls for performance, sound design, or FX step-lock sequencing. It features the following areas which we ll discuss in detail overleaf: Drum Voice Select XY Pad Macro System 35

XY Pad Page - Drum Voice Select Evolution: Drum Voice Select The Drum Voice Select controls on the XY Pad Page have the exact function as Drum Select in the Drum Mixer on the Mix Page. Clicking a Drum Type name will underline the name with a Pink Line, and this selects the corresponding Drum Voice for editing. Once selected, the XY Pad and Macro Controls will control / affect this selected Drum Voice. XY Pad Page - XY Pad Evolution: XY Pad Evolution s XY Pad allows you to intuitively and visually mix the volume between all 3 Drum Engines within a Drum Voice. The current Mix Position in relation to each Drum Engine (Drum / Transient / Layer) is displayed by the Pink Dot. Clicking anywhere in XY Pad area, or simply dragging the Pink Dot will alter the Mix relationship between all 3 Drum Engines on the currently selected Drum Voice. This allows you to visually and quickly mix the volumes of all 3 Layers. 36

XY Pad Page - Macro System Evolution: Macro Controls Evolution features a powerful Macro System that allows you to freely assign various parameters to 8 Macro Knobs for performance, sound design, or FX step-lock sequencing. Each of Evolution s 8 Macro Knobs features 42 available parameter destinations, independent modulation depth sliders, and a Macro Amount control. Macro System Getting Started To set up a Macro Control: 1. Click the parameter name that is displayed directly underneath any of the 8 Macro Knobs. 2. You will now be presented with a drop-down menu of 42 available parameter destinations. Select a parameter destination from the drop-down menu that you would like the currently selected Macro Knob to control. 3. You will now see that the parameter name undeath this Macro Knob has updated to display your chosen parameter destination. You will now need to set the Modulation Depth Sliders in order for the Macro Knob to have an effect over the selected parameter. See below: Macro Depth Sliders Evolution: Macro Destination Parameters Evolution: Macro Depth Sliders Each of Evolution s Macro Controls features 3 Modulation Depth Sliders directly above / to the sides of the Macro Amount Knob. T Clicking and dragging this slider sets the Macro Depth amount for the Transient Engine. D - Clicking and dragging this slider sets the Macro Depth amount for the Drum Engine. L - Clicking and dragging this slider sets the Macro Depth amount for the Layer Engine. 37

This is very powerful and allows you to set exactly how much influence the Macro Knob will have over each of the 3 Drum Engines independently for the selected parameter destination. As an example: Let s say we have clicked a Macro Knob and have selected Pan from the drop-down menu of parameter destinations. We now turn the D Macro Depth Slider to 100%, and both the T and L Macro Depth Sliders to 50%. In the above example, turning the big Macro Knob will now give you full range of Drum Pan (100%) and 50% range of Transient and Layer Pan. Meaning, in this scenario, turning the Macro Knob Fully right will pan the Drum Engine fully right in the stereo field, and the Drum and Transient Engines 50% right in the stereo field. Macro Amount Knob Evolution: Macro Amount Knob The Macro Amount Knob controls and effects the selected parameter destination for all 3 Drum Engines, the range of which is determined by the Macro Depth Sliders as discussed above. Available List of Destinations Below you will find a full list of all Parameter Destinations available for each Macro Control: Drum Voice Drum Pitch Drum Filter Mixer EQ Compressor Shaper Volume Fine Tune Filter Freq LF Freq Threshold Shaper Flt Freq Pan Pitch LFO Filter Res LF Gain Ratio Filter Drive Amp Attack Pitch LFO Rate Filter LFO Rate LMF Freq Comp Attack Bit Crush Amp Hold Pitch Envelope Filter Envelope LMF Gain Comp Release Redux Amp Decay Pitch Decay 1 Attack Curve HMF Freq Comp Mix Drive Pitch Break Filer Attack HMF Gain Heat Pitch Decay 2 Filter Hold HF Freq Trans Attack Filter Decay HF Gain Trans Sustain 38

Macro Visual Guide Evolution: Visual Macro Guide Evolution features a slick visual guide that clearly shows which parameters are being controlled by a Macro. Once a Macro is assigned on the XY Pad Page, and a Depth has been set, the corresponding parameter on Evolution s Mix Page will display a visual colour-coded Macro Ring around the knob. This indicates that the parameter is currently linked to a Macro Knob. Macro Ring - This is dynamic and corresponds directly to the Macro Depth Amount as set on the XY Pad Page. It shows a visual guide of the range that the corresponding Macro Knob has over this parameter. Macro Dot - You will see a Grey Dot overtop of the Macro Ring. This displays the true position of the Macro Amount Knob on the XY Pad Page. This is important as it gives you a visual representation of the Macro Knob whilst viewing the Mix Page. Sequencing Macros As well as being able to assign, alter and automate Macros, Evolution also allows you to sequence them. This is very powerful and essentially gives you 8 lanes of totally modular parameter lock / FX sequencing. See Sequencer Page section overleaf: 39

Sequencer Page - Overview Evolution: Sequencer Page Enables the Global Sequencer view for a more thorough and complete view of the Drum Sequencer and its associated controls. Evolution s Sequencer Page is located by pressing the SEQ navigation button found at the top left the left-hand side of the Instrument Header. The Sequencer Page is home to Evolution s powerful Note / FX sequencer and Pattern Browser. It features the following areas which we ll discuss in detail overleaf: Note Sequencer FX Sequencer 40

Sequencer Page - Note Sequencer Evolution: Note Sequencer Evolution s Note Sequencer mirrors much of the same functionality of the Classic Drum Sequencer, but in a much more visual way. The Note Sequencer is located by pressing the Note Icon button found at the left-hand side of the Sequencer. Once selected, the Note Sequencer matrix shows note velocity data for all 12 Drum Voices simultaneously. This view offers an extremely quick workflow for sequencing multiple Drum Voices. Sequence Lane Evolution: Sequence Lane Each of the 12 Drum Voices features an independent 32-Step Sequence Lane which allows for drawing per step velocity for the corresponding Drum Voice. Unlike the Classic Step Sequencer which has two values, this lane allows the fine tuning and drawing of all 127 velocity levels. By using a key command these lanes take on a secondary function: Command / Control - Clears the selected Sequence Lane. Drum Name - This shows the selected Drum Voice for each lane. When Auto Play is enabled this control will trigger the sound of the Drum Voice. Sequence Lane Clear - When pressed, Sequence Data for the currently selected Sequence Lane will be deleted. Sequence Lane Randomize When pressed, Sequence Data for the currently selected Sequence Lane will be randomized. 41

Sequencer Zoom - Clicking the Zoom (+) Icon expands the selected Sequence Lane to fit the space of the entire Sequencer Matrix. This enables extremely fine visual editing of any Sequence Lane. The Zoom View can be toggled on and off by clicking the Zoom Icon. Mute - Mutes the Output of the corresponding Drum Voice. Solo - Solos the Output of the corresponding Drum Voice. Global Accent Evolution: Global Accent The Global Accent section displays the Global Accent state for corresponding step. This is displayed as a rectangle light above the Sequence Step. When activated, every drum on the corresponding step will be increased between negative 6.0db accent to +6.0dB. This value can be set with the slider to the left. Sequencer Slop Sequencer Slop Randomize - Moving the fader at the left-hand side of this feature randomizes the Global Slop value of each Sequence Step. This value can be offset on individual steps by using the Slop Step 1-32 Controls above the Sequence Lanes. See below: Sequence Slop Fine - This controls the Flam Time or 'Slop' manually for each step. Positive Values cause a delay between each step from Drum Voice 1 to Drum Voice 12. Negative Values cause a delay between each step from Drum Voice 12 to Drum Voice 1. To use this feature, simply click and drag (up or down) the 1-32 Slop Controls / Numbers above the Sequence Lanes. Sequencer Global Options Evolution: Sequencer Global Options Sequence Copy - Copies the currently selected Sequence to memory. When enabled, the current Sequence Pattern will be copied to memory and replace the next selected Sequence Pattern. Duplicate Sequence - When the Sequence Length is less than 32 Steps, the current Sequence will be duplicated until it is double its current length or until there are no available steps remaining. Sequence Clear - When pressed, all Sequence Data will be deleted. Sequence Length The displayed numbers 1 through 32 can be used to set the number of Steps in the Sequence. For example, clicking on the number 1 will set the total Sequence Length to 1 Step. When Option / Alt is held on the keyboard and one of these buttons is selected, the Sequence will be reordered such that the selected Step becomes the first Step of the Sequence. 42

Sequencer Page - FX Sequencer Evolution: FX Sequencer The FX Sequencer allows you to sequence Evolution s 8 Macro Controls, as well as Pitch, Reverb, and Delay. This gives you a fully modular step-lock parameter sequencer Evolution s FX Sequencer is located by pressing the FX Icon button found at the lefthand side of the Sequencer. Drum Voice Selector Figure FX Sequencer Drum Selector The currently selected Drum Voice is visually indicated with a Pink Underline / Overline. Clicking any of the 12 Drum Voice names will select the corresponding Drum Voice for FX Sequencing, and the Sequencer Matrix will allow you to sequence various parameters and FX for this Drum Voice. FX Sequence Lanes The FX Sequencer Lanes function in the exact same way as the Note Sequencer Lanes, only they sequence Parameters and FX instead of Notes. The first FX Sequence Lane will always display the Drum Voice Note Lane, such that you can see the pattern of the selected Drum Voice. Lane 2 always displays Pitch and allows to you sequence Pitch. Lanes 3-10 are Modular and allow you to sequence Macro Controls. Changing a Macro Control Destination on the XY Pad Page will dynamically update the FX Sequencer to show this Parameter on the corresponding Lane. Important: These lanes are turned On / Off by clicking the blue text at the left of each lane (FLT FREQ for example). Lane 11 always displays Delay Send and allows you to sequence Delay. Lane 12 always displays Reverb Send and allows you to sequence Reverb Send Level. 43

Troubleshooting Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding install process and troubleshooting: 1. Evolution is stuck at the LOADING screen? This screen only appears when Kontakt cannot initialize or start-up. Commonly this can be the case if your DAW or host has not completed its start-up sequence. Some of the common ways this can happen in different DAWS are as follows 1. The audio driver is not enabled or has been set to an inactive audio device. This can happen with some audio devices, such as the UA Apollo, when it is selected but not physically connected. 2. The DAW has entered a power safe mode. This will happen with Logic Pro when used with a MacBook that has been left idle on battery power. 3. The power button or audio device enable button has been set to off on your DAW. 2. Upon loading Evolution, Kontakt displays a message that files are missing. This Suggests that the RAR files did not extract properly or the files did not 100% download / complete before extracting. Please ensure that all 3 RAR files are fully downloaded to the same location on your computer before extracting them. Please ensure that each RAR file is the following size: Part 1 should be: 2GB Part 2 should be: 2GB Part 3 should be: 1.3GB 50
