3 INTRODUCTION OVERVIEW Tricky Traps is a collection of 16 creative contraptions spanning sequencers, instruments and MIDI effects that are tons of fun to play. They re designed to be chained together to trigger unexpected reactions and happy accidents and they bring a new level of customized control to Push. Each MIDI device and audio effect can be accessed via a customized Push grid, giving you a range of tactile sequencing options that are totally new to Push. It works well with other controllers too, or your MIDI keyboard. 4 INSTALLATION / ACTIVATION Register your product at SonicFaction.com for updates and special offers. ***BEFORE INSTALLING THE.ALP YOU DOWNLOADED FROM CONTINUATA: 1) FIRST, visit ableton.com to authorize your version of Tricky Traps. 2) If necessary, login to your Ableton account. 3) Manually type your serial number into the fields and click Register Serial. 4) NOW, Double-click the Tricky Traps by SonicFaction.alp to install the device into Live. 5) If you installed before authorizing: open Live s Preferences > Licenses tab and click Authorize at ableton.com to automatically authorize Tricky Traps. NOTE: This is not necessary if you downloaded the pack from Ableton directly. If you downloaded the pack directly from Ableton, simply open the.alp to install Tricky Traps. ***YOU MUST HAVE ABLETON LIVE 9.5 AND MAX FOR LIVE 7.2 TO USE TRICKY TRAPS. NAVIGATION Once you have installed Tricky Traps, you can find it using Live s built in browser by following the steps below: 1) Simply navigate to Packs located in the Places section and find the pack, Tricky Traps by Sonic Faction. 2) Look inside the pack by hitting the disclosure triangle on the left side. 3) There you will see Audio Effects, MIDI Effects, Tricky Traps Instrument and Sounds. 5 MIDI SEQUENCERS At the heart of the collection are five quirky sequencer MIDI effects for quick creation of unexpected patterns, either on-screen or from Push: 4PLAY A melodic step sequencer with four simultaneous play heads, each with its own speed and direction. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the MIDI sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. FULL VIEW: Opens an alternative pop-up viewing window. TAB : Located in the upper right corner, this will change which playhead controls are currently being viewed. ENABLE: Turns the currently selected playhead on or off. DIRECTION: Changes the direction of the currently selected playhead. Options include forward, backward, palindrome, rotate and random. 5

6 RATE: Controls the speed of the currently selected playhead relative to live s transport. GATE: Controls the length of the notes being played for the currently selected transport. OCTAVE: Controls the octave of the notes for the currently selected playhead. LOOP: The range slider below the sequence. Controls the range of the sequence being played by the currently selected playhead. SCALE: Determines the scale being used for the sequence. KEY: Determines the key being used for the sequence. BANK: Changes which bank of notes your currently viewing. Bank up for an additional 8 notes. SWING: Shifts the in-between notes of the currently selected playhead. Use this to create grooves in you pattern. SCALE: Determines the scale being used for the sequence. KEY: Determines the key being used for the sequence. ISO ARP Create pseudo-random progressions within a scale and key. Great for generating melodic soundscapes that fluctuate over time. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. 6

7 CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the MIDI sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. FULL VIEW: Opens an alternative pop-up viewing window. SWING: Shifts the in-between notes of the sequence. Use this to create grooves in you pattern. RATE: The number boxes below the sequence matrix. Determines the speed for the correlating column. MASTER RATE: Determines the speed of all columns simultaneously. SCALE: Determines the scale being used for the sequence. KEY: Determines the key being used for the sequence. RADAR A rhythmic circular sequencer where each lane can run at its own speed or direction. Assign each of the four lanes to any drum rack. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the MIDI sequencer. 7

8 RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. FULL VIEW: Opens an alternative pop-up viewing window. NOTE: The keyboard to the right of the sequence. Determines the note being played by the color correlating sequence (i.e red, blue, yellow or pink). OCTAVE: The addition and subtraction symbols located to the right of the Notes. Shifts the Note Keyboard up or down an octave. MUTE/SOLO: The M and S buttons located to the right of octave. Mutes or solos the correlating sequence (i.e red, blue, yellow or pink). RATE: Controls the speed of the currently the correlating sequence (i.e red, blue, yellow or pink) relative to live s transport. DIRECTION: Changes the direction of the correlating sequence (i.e red, blue, yellow or pink). Options include forward, backward, palindrome, rotate and random. SWING: Shifts the in-between notes of the correlating sequence (i.e red, blue, yellow or pink). Use this to create grooves in you pattern. C: Clears all sequences. 8

9 RIPKORD Combined chord generator and arpeggiator/sequencer. Quickly build in-key chord progressions and run the chord set through an expressive arpeggiator/sequencer for transcendent melodic patterns. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the MIDI sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. CHORD SECTION CHORD ON/OFF: Determines whether the chord function of Ripkord is being used or not. TRIGGER: Determines which key trigger is being viewed. Each key trigger can be used to create different chord shapes. The available notes to trigger chord shapes are C2-B3. Can be determines by this numberbox, or the orange keyboard at the bottom of the device. FOLLOW: Determines whether the currently viewed key trigger can be determined by a MIDI input. CHORD SELECT: Chooses a chord shape for the selected key trigger. 9

10 INVERSION: Inverts your chord shape to different degrees. ARP SECTION RATE: Determines the speed of the arpeggio. ARP ON/OFF: Determines whether the arp function of Ripkord is being used or not. SWING: Shifts the in-between notes of the arpeggio. Use this to create grooves in you pattern. STYLE: Determines the arp style being used. Choose from a wide variety of styles. ARPEGGIATOR TAB: Determines whether your viewing the Velocity sequence, the Length sequence, or the Octave sequence. VELOCITY SEQUENCE: The blue multi-slider, allows the velocity of your arpeggiation to change over time. VELOCITY RANGE: The blue range slider located to the right of the velocity sequence. Determines the range at which the velocity will change over time. LENGTH SEQUENCE: The yellow multi-slider, allows the length of the notes in your arpeggio to change over time. LENGTH RANGE: The yellow range slider located to the right of the length sequence. Determines the range at which the length will change over time. 10

11 OCTAVE SEQUENCE: The red matrix, allows the octave of the notes in your arpeggio to change over time. GATE SEQUENCE: The pink toggles below the multi sliders. Allows you to gate specific notes within your arpeggio/sequence.?: Randomized the currently viewed sequence. C: Stands for clear; will reset the currently viewed sequence to it s initial value. RETRIG: Determines whether the sequence will re-trigger when a MIDI input received. RIPPLE Generates sound ripples that echo on a grid. Set up notes and repeaters to create selfoscillating ripple patterns. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the MIDI sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. FULL VIEW: Opens an alternative pop-up viewing window. RATE: Controls the speed of the sequencer relative to live s transport. SCALE: Determines the scale being used for the sequence. 11

12 KEY: Determines the key being used for the sequence. TAB: Located below the sequence grid. Determines the input mode of the sequence grid. TRIGGER: Begins a ripple, that will play notes as it passes through them. NOTE: Allows you to input notes for the ripple the play as it passes through them. RE-TRIG: Allows you to input re-trigger ripples. These will cause a second ripple to start as the Trigger Ripple passes through them. ***NOTE: This tab allows for the key modifiers shift and option. This means that you can hold shift and click the matrix to input notes, and you can hold option and click the matrix to input retriggers. LENGTH: Determines how often the ripple will repeat when repeat is activated. This is based on whatever the rate is set to. OFFSET: Determines when your ripple sequence will start relative to Live s transport. SWING: Shifts the in-between notes of the sequence. Use this to create grooves in you pattern. REPEAT: Determines whether your ripple will repeat or not. C: Located to the right of Full View, this will clear your current sequence. 12

13 AUDIO CONTROLLERS/FX GRID NINJA Assign eight Push or keyboard-mapped macros to any parameter in Live and get tweaking: when the knob is released it snaps back to zero, so it s great for hands-on triggering of momentary effects. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the device. ***Grid Ninja also can be triggered by MIDI. To do so, select MIDI under Controller Select. Then grab MIDI NINJA from the Tricky Traps Grid Ninja Presets folder and drag it onto a separate MIDI track. Make sure both are on the same channel, and you can then use MIDI from the MIDI track containing MIDI NINJA to trigger value changes on GRID NINJA. MIDI will trigger grid ninja from the notes C1- D#6. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. TRIGGER/SLIDE: Determines whether the macros reset or stay at whatever value they were at when released. SLIDE TIME: When in slide mode, this determines the amount of time it takes for the macro to change from value to value. 13

14 MAP/UNMAP: Enable mapping for the corresponding macro. To assign the macro, toggle map to it s on position and select a parameter in Live. This will cause the corresponding macro to assign to the control clicked within Live. RANGE: Determines the range of control for the corresponding macro. To select which range you are viewing (for macros 1-8) by click on the macro who s range you want to change. Hold Shift to adjust one end of the range Hold Command to change the minimum and maximum simultaneously, while keeping the current constraints. Hold Option to change the minimum and maximum simultaneously, losing the current constraints. SEQ MOD Assign this 64 step sequencer to any parameter in Live. Use the Push grid to draw in your sequence and the slider to manipulate the modulation range. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. 14

15 MAP: Enables mapping for the sequencer. To assign a parameter to be manipulated by the sequence, toggle map to it s on position and select a parameter in Live. This will cause the sequencer to begin manipulating the control clicked within Live. RATE: Controls the speed of the sequencer relative to live s transport. DIRECTION: Changes the direction of the sequence. Options include forward, backward, palindrome, rotate and random. CURRENT PAGE: The blue row below the sequence matrix. Controls which page of the sequence you are currently viewing PAGE AMT: Determines how many pages are being used in the sequence. Sequence up to 64 steps. ***Hold Shift and click the Current Page control as another way to change the amount of pages being used in the sequence. RANGE: Determines the range of control for whatever the sequencer has been assigned to. Hold Shift to adjust one end of the range Hold Command to change the minimum and maximum simultaneously, while keeping the current constraints. Hold Option to change the minimum and maximum simultaneously, losing the current constraints.?: Randomized the currently viewed sequence. 16 XYZed Inspired by modular X-Y sequencers, this unorthodox 16-step sequencer can be assigned to any parameter in live and then fed different values and directions often with random and unpredictable results. CONTROLLER ENABLE: The toggle above Select Device, Determines whether the selected controller is on or off. CONTROLLER SELECT: The menu located below Controller Enable. Selects the controller being used with the sequencer. RESCAN: Utility to rescan the controllers registered within live. Useful when the MIDI sequencer has been dragged into Ableton Live before a controller has been plugged in. MAP: Enables mapping for the sequencer. To assign a parameter to be manipulated by the sequence, toggle map to it s on position and select a parameter in Live. This will cause the sequencer to begin manipulating the control clicked within Live.?: Randomizes the values of all dials. PLAY MODE: Controls the general direction algorithm used to trigger various dial positions. X Direction: Controls the direction or the sequence relative to the X axis. Options include forward, backward, palindrome, rotate and random. X OFFSET: Determines where the sequence starts for the X axis relative to live s transport. Y Direction: Controls the direction or the sequence relative to the Y axis. Options include forward, backward, palindrome, rotate and random. 16

17 Y OFFSET: Determines where the sequence starts for the Y axis relative to live s transport. RATE: Controls the speed of the sequencer relative to live s transport. RANGE: Determines the range of control for whatever the sequencer has been assigned to. 18 INSTRUMENTS 808 BASS Kicks, toms, booms and subs inspired by the iconic drum machine. SELECT: Changes the 808 Bass sound you are using. PEAK: Determines the amount of pitch decay. DECAY: Determines the amount of time it takes for the pitch to reach it s sustain level. ***This is a great tool for emulating the beater for a kick drum END: Determines the amount of pitch release. RELEASE: Determines the amount of time it takes for the pitch to reach it s end value, after receiving a Note Off message. Also determines the amount of time it takes for the amplitude to reach a value of -inf db after receiving a Note Off message. SHAPER: Add distortion to the 808 Bass sound. 18

19 AMBN Mellow, ambient tones made for contemplative generative sequences. SELECT: The big dial on the left of the device. This determines which AMBN sound being used. DELAY X TIME: Controls the delay time in a synced manner. DELAY X MIX: Adjust the balance between processed delay signal and unprocessed signals. DELAY Y TIME: Controls the delay time in a synced manner. DELAY Y MIX: Adjust the balance between processed delay signal and unprocessed signals. VERB X TIME: Controls the decay time of the reverb. VERB X MIX: Adjust the balance between processed reverb signal and unprocessed signals. 19

20 DIRTY TALK Gritty vocal synth that can morph between vowels. VOWEL: Controls the Vowel Filter Shape. Will morph between A, E, I, O and U vowel sounds. SOUND: Control which type of Complex Waveform gets passed through the Vowel Filter. VOWEL ATTACK: ControlS the time it takes for the vowel filter shape to reach the value determined by the Vowel Envelope Amount. VOWEL DECAY: Control the time it takes for the vowel filter shape to reach it s sustain level. VOWEL SUSTAIN: Controls the shape of the vowel filter, after it s reached the end of the decay stage. VOWEL RELEASE: Controls the time it takes for the vowel filter shape to reach it s minimum value, after a Note Off message is received. VOWEL ENVELOPE AMOUNT (Env Amt): Determines how much influence the Vowel Envelope has on the Vowel Filter Shape. VOWEL REPEAT RATE: Determines the amount of time it takes before the envelope starts repeating itself. This will only have an effect if Vowel Repeat is enabled. VOWEL REPEAT: Determines whether or not the Vowel Envelope will repeat over a certain amount of time (determined by the Vowel Repeat Rate ), or only be triggered by a Note On message. 20

21 AMP ATTACK: The amp envelope attack time; The time it takes for the amplitude to travel from it s initial value (-inf db) to it s peak value (0 db). AMP DECAY: The amp envelope decay time; The time it takes for the amplitude to travel from it s peak value (0 db) to the sustain level. AMP SUSTAIN: The amp envelope sustain level; the level reached at the end of the amp envelope decay period. AMP RELEASE: The amp envelope release time; the time it takes the amplitude to travel to the end value (-inf db) after a note has been released. AMP REPEAT RATE: Determines the amount of time it takes before the envelope starts repeating itself. This will only have an effect if Amp Repeat is enabled. AMP REPEAT: Determines whether or not the Amp Envelope will repeat over a certain amount of time (determined by the Amp Repeat Rate ), or only be triggered by a Note On message. SATURATOR: Controls the Gain of the saturation effect. FREQ: Sets the frequency of the coloration filter for the saturation effect. DELAY (DLY): Adjust the balance between the delayed signal and unprocessed signals. DELAY TIME: Controls the delay time in a synced manner. 21

22 GLITCH THING Glitchy, twitchy, robotic and psychotic sound generator. TRANSPOSE: Transposes all sample up or down 48 semitones. DECAY: Adjust the decay time of all Glitch Thing samples. XY CONTROL: Adds a bit crushing effect as you increase the value of the Y Axis. Adds a delay effect as you increase the value of the X Axis. LOOP: Causes the samples to repeat. Repeat values range from 1 second to 10 milliseconds. 22

23 MAD FM Thick bass and lead tones with extreme FM modulation and sound mangling. SELECT: Selects the Mad Fm sound being used. SCAN: Scans through the selected Mad Fm Sound. Each sound is full of modulations, this can be a great tool to find the perfect articulation. OSCILLATION AMOUNT: The number box below the XY Control. This controls the amount of oscillation applied to the select Mad Fm sound. OSCILLATION WAVE TYPE: Controls the oscillation wave type that is applied to the selected Mad Fm sound. XY Control: Controls the Oscillation Amount and Oscillation Wave Type simultaneously. OSCILLATION TUNE: Adjusts the tuning of the oscillation applied to the selected Mad Fm sound. FM/AM: Determines whether you re using frequency modulation or amplitude modulation. FM ATTACK: The time it takes for the modulation intensity to travel from it s initial value (0%) to it s peak value (determined by the Modulation level). FM DECAY: The time it takes for the modulation intensity to travel from it s peak value (determined by the Modulation Level) to the sustain level. FM SUSTAIN: The level reached at the end of the modulation envelope decay period. 23

24 FM RELEASE: The time needed to travel to the end value (0%) after a note has been released. AMP ATTACK: The amp envelope attack time; The time it takes for the amplitude to travel from it s initial value (-inf db) to it s peak value (0 db). AMP DECAY: The amp envelope decay time; The time it takes for the amplitude to travel from it s peak value (0 db) to the sustain level. AMP SUSTAIN: The amp envelope sustain level; the level reached at the end of the amp envelope decay period. AMP RELEASE: The amp envelope release time; the time it takes the amplitude to travel to the end value (-inf db) after a note has been released. SYNDRUM Analog drums sounds recorded from a massive modular synth rack. SELECT: Determines which drum sound is being used. PITCH: Determines the pitch of the drum sound being used. Ranges from -24 to 24 semitones. VOLUME: Controls the amplitude of the drum sound being used. DECAY: Controls the amount of time it takes for the drum sound to reach and amplitude of -inf. FX 1: Controls the gain of a saturation effect. This effect is applied to Drum 1 and Drum 2. 24

25 FX 2: Control a bit crushing effect. This effect is applied to Drum 3 and Drum 4.?: Allows you to randomize each drum sound, or all drum cells simultaneously (Master Random is located in the upper right corner of the device). TRANCEBOT Deep and trancey lead sounds for big arpeggios. GLIDE: Determines the amount of time it takes to transition between the pitch of any playing notes. MONO/POLY: Determines whether or not Trancebot is monophonic or polyphonic. OSC: Controls which basic oscillation waveform is being used. Options include Sine, Triangle, Saw and Square. WAV: Determines which complex waveform you are using. Choose from over 25 different waveforms. BLEND: Adjusts the balance between the two oscillators. OCTAVE UP/DOWN (+ -): The addition and subtraction symbols next to the oscillators. Controls the octave of each oscillator independently. CUTOFF: Controls the frequency at which the low pass filter will begin to attenuate signals. RESONANCE: Controls the strength of frequencies lying near the filter s cutoff. FILTER ENVELOPE AMOUNT: Controls how much influence the filter envelope has on the filter s cutoff. 25

26 FILTER DECAY: Controls the amount of time it takes for the filter cutoff to travel from it s peak (determined by the envelope amount) to it s sustain (determined by the filter cutoff). DELAY: Controls the delay time in a synced manner. DELAY MIX: Adjust the balance between processed delay signal and unprocessed signals. VERB TIME: Controls the decay time of the reverb. VERB MIX: Adjust the balance between processed reverb signal and unprocessed signals. TROPIX Sounds of marimbas, steel drums and other melodic percussion. SELECT: Determines which Tropix sound is being used. AMP DECAY: The amp envelope decay time; The time it takes for the amplitude to travel from it s peak value (0 db) to -inf db. FILTER FREQUENCY: Controls the frequency at which the low pass filter will begin to attenuate signals. MATERIAL: Selects the resonant object being simulated. Options include Beam, Marimba, String, Membrane, Plate, Pipe and Tube. PITCH: Adjusts the tuning of the Material in semitones. 26
