2 Introduction: Photoshop is part of the Adobe Creative Suite programs used for creating and editing images. Photoshop also includes options for editing videos. Launching Photoshop: Click on Start Menu Type Photoshop in the search box Click on Photoshop to open it Photoshop Interface: Image Source: 2

3 Toolbar: The toolbar contains variety of tools for editing images. Following are descriptions of all tools and their usage: Image Source: 3

4 Creating a Blank Document: Click on File menu Click on New Select the desired length and width of your file and click OK Opening an Image/Video: Click on File menu Click on Open Navigate to the file location that you want to open Click Open 4

5 Filter Menu Options: The Filter menu includes various commands to apply filters to your image. Examples of some filters include blurring, sharpening, adding clouds, adding fibers etc. Working with Layers Using layers makes Photoshop a powerful tool. Each object can be added to a separate layer enabling you to apply different filters to each object and combine different objects together in one image. If you cannot see the Layers Panel on the right side of the screen, display it by clicking on Window menu and selecting Layers option. 5

6 Layers Panel Layer Menu Options: Click here to view the menu options of the Layers Panel. Some options include: adding/duplicating/deleting a layer, flattening an image, creating a layers group etc. 1. Click here to select options for filtering your layers. Filtering makes it easy to search for layers especially if your file includes many layers 2. Adjust the Opacity from here. Decreasing the opacity makes the selected layer more transparent 3. You can lock one or more layers using the Lock options. Locking layers is helpful when you are editing one layer and do not want to mistakenly change settings of another layers. You can lock transparent pixels, image pixels, position, or all. 4. Click the eye icon next to a layer to make it visible/hidden 5. Slowly double click a layer name to rename it 6. Click here to apply style to the selected layer 7. Click here to create a layer mask 8. Click here to add fills or apply other adjustments to a selected layer 9. Click here to add a layer group (layer groups are used for organizing multiple layers under one group if they have a common characteristic to make locating the layers easier) 10. Click here to delete a layer Adding an Image to your Photoshop File: In order to add an image to your current Photoshop file, follow these steps: Click on File menu Click on Place Navigate to the file location that you want to open Click Open Your image will be automatically placed into its own separate layer Saving Photoshop Files: You can save your Photoshop file in different formats. Click on File menu Save As From the File Type drop down menu, select the desired file format Some popular file formats are: JPEG: Most common image format PNG: Image format used for showing transparent parts. Commonly used for logos and icons GIFF: Another common image format which supports animation PSD/PDD: Photoshop file format saving all your file layers and settings enabling you to make changes to it at a later time Editing Videos with Photoshop The newer versions of Photoshop also include video editing capabilities. Switch your workspace to Motion located on the top right corner of the screen Open your video file by clicking on File menu Open 7

8 This will import your video file as one layer and you can make changes to the video such as trimming, adding audio file(s), muting the audio, combining several videos/video parts together etc. You can also import a video as separate layers which will enable you to make changes to each single layer of the video by applying filters, adding text (i.e. captions) etc. To import a video file in separate layers, click on File menu Import Video Frames to Layers Trimming Videos: On the timeline, hover over the right or left corner of your video until your mouse pointer changes into a two headed black arrow Click and drag the arrow to trim your video 8

9 Adding Audio: To add an audio (i.e. background music), click on File menu Place Navigate to your audio file location and click Open Adjusting Audio Volume: On the timeline, click on the desired video/audio name Drag the volume slider to the desired position or drag it all the way to the left to mute the audio Combining Multiple Audio/Video File Together: You can combine multiple video and audio files together by clicking on File menu Place Navigate to your audio/video files locations and click Open Place them to the desired positions on the timeline Saving your Video File: Once finished editing you video, click on File menu Export Render Video Select the location to save the video Select the desired video format (i.e. QuickTime, AVI, MPEG-4) 9
