EDIT202 Digital Media Lab Assignment Guidelines 1. Create a new folder on your desktop labeled Media. 2. In order to import (see prep sheet for definition) video files into IMovie your movie files will be converted to the.mov video file type Below you will find three options for downloading some usable clips for use in your lab A) Find a video on YouTube and convert it to.mov using Media Converter ( Please note this website is limited to only 5 conversions a day. B) Find a video on YouTube and convert it to.mov using Bender Converter ( Please note this website is limited to only two conversions a day. C) Search and download video using Open Video ( The first two options allow you to use YouTube, ( the very popular video sharing site and convert using Web 2.0 applications to convert to the correct format. Choosing one of these options will give you more clips to choose from that relate to your topic, although you will have to do more searching. The third option, downloading from Open Video has a more limited selection but is more of a streamlined search process.

A) Using YouTube and Media Converter To find a video related to your topic type in a search phrase and click on the Search button. This should bring up a page of search results, hopefully with videos that are related to your search. Note: You may have to try several different searches before finding a video related to your topic To preview your video click on the title link of the clip. Note: If you are viewing this video in a computer lab on campus you will need a pair of headphones to hear any accompanying audio. If the video you found is not to your liking or will not work. You can click on the back browser in your YouTube window to try another search or you

can choose from the list of related videos in the bottom right hand corner of the video window. To preview the related video single click on the title of the video. Once you have found the video you will be using copy the address for the video inside the address bar by selecting it and typing CTRL+C to copy. Now to convert the video to an.mpg file we recommend opening a new tab in your browser (CTRL-T for Internet Explorer) and type in the following address for the Media Converter site. You should now see the following browser window:

To enter your copied link click on the enter a link button and you should see the following window. Paste in the link as shown below using CTRL-V as shown below and click on ok. You should now see the following window. Notice that you see the link to your video in the conversion list. To convert the video click on the go to next step button. Note that the advertising has been blacked out in the image above. Once again because this is a supposed free site you may have to endure some advertising, just ignore and dismiss. After clicking on the go to next step button you should see the following conversion option screens. Make sure.mov is your chosen file type and click on ok.

Click on the start button to proceed as shown below: You will now see a progress bar as shown below: Once the conversion has been completed you should see the following confirmation message.

To download your converted video click on the download link as shown above. After clicking on the download button you see a File Download window. To save your video click on the Save button and once the save window appears be sure to navigate to your media folder and save the folder (as an option you could rename your file). Remember that you need two clips for editing inside imovie. Once you have converted and saved two video clips proceed to step three downloading your audio.mp3 file. B) Using YouTube and Bender Converter To find a video related to your topic type in a search phrase and click on the Search button.

You can click on the back browser in your YouTube window to try another search or you can choose from the list of related videos in the bottom right hand corner of the video window.

To preview the related video single click on the title of the video. Once you have found the video you will be using copy the address for the video inside the address bar by selecting it and typing CTRL+C to copy. Now to convert the video to an.mpg file we recommend opening a new tab in your browser (CTRL-T for Internet Explorer) and type in the following address for the Bender Converter site. After arriving at the Bender Converter website, use CTRL+V to paste in the address for your YouTube video into the Video page link: field as shown below: Click in the QuickTime Movie for Mac (.mov) radio check box to specify the correct file format and click on the Convert button as shown above. Once you video has been successfully converted you will see the following screen. Click the Download button and save your converted

movie into your Media folder. Please note that the Bender Converter website only allows for two conversions per day, so this may force you to use one of the other available video download options for this lab. Remember that you need two clips for editing inside imovie. Once you have converted and saved two video clips proceed to step three downloading your audio.mp3 file. C) Finding and Download using Open Video To start locating video clips for use in your movie, go to the following web address: Once you have successfully connected to the Open Video website you will see the following search page:

It is important to note that this image may not be exactly as you see it when viewing it on the web. If you are unable to connect to the Open Video Project website contact your lab instructor for an alternative method of downloading your video clips. Click on the Educational link to narrow the web search to just educational video files. After you have clicked on the Educational link select the following video search options to help narrow the search in the Modify Search window. Make sure your duration is set to Less than 1 minute and the Format is set to MPEG-1 or Quicktime. Once you have the correct search options click on the Search button. Please note you can search for any educational related term not just Water or Robots.

Open Video will now search for clips relating to your search term(s) and display the results. To download these clips first click on the clip frame.

To preview your clip left click on the MPEG-1 link in the Download section of the window (Be sure you select the MPEG-1or the Quicktime file type as this is the file type that can be successfully imported into imovie), this should open your video in the default video player. If you like the video and want to use it click on MPEG-1 link or the Quicktime link for your chosen clip and save it into your Media folder. Remember that you need two clips for editing inside imovie. Once you have converted and saved two video clips proceed to step three downloading your audio.mp3 file.

3. Download any one of the available sample mp3 files from the Needed Files section of the Digital Media lab page on the course WebCT site. Save this file into your newly created Media folder. Note that as an option you can always provide your own audio file in.mp3 format. 4. Using imovie, create a movie that is anywhere between seconds in duration. Your new movie should have the following criteria: An opening Title credits that runs for 5 seconds, which provides a title for your movie and names you as director. At least one visible transition between clips (a good suggestion would be between your two converted clips) Video effects? An End Credits that runs for 5 seconds. An.mp3 file for your sound track which replaces any existing audio from your imported clips. To launch the program, locate the IMovie icon, and double click: Once you have launched imovie, you will see the program interface with a blank project screen labeled Untitled. After you have launched imovie you should see the following imovie interface window. If you are completing this project from home you may see a list of past projects in your project window.

To begin creating your movie, select New Project from the File menu. This will bring up the following options window.

Apply the following setting for your new Project: o At this moment we will not be adding a theme to your movie so ensure that the No Theme option is selected as shown above. o Name: slscott - EDIT 202 (replace slscott with your own campus computing id) o Aspect Ratio: Standard (4:3) o Frame Rate: 24 fps Cinema To finish creating your new project click on the Create button. You should now see the following imovie editing window titled with the name of your new project. Once your project has been created proceed onto the next step. 5. Create a Title for your new movie that names yourself as director. Click on the Title browser button as shown below to begin creating your title

This should bring up the following Title browser window where you can scroll through the various title screen animations. In the example shown below we are going to select the Far Far Away title animation. Note: When you place your cursor over top of the animation you should see a preview of the animation effect. Click and hold down on your chosen title animation and drag it to the project window as shown below. You should see a green line appear at the start of your project window

After you place your title animation in the Project window you will see the following Choose Background window appear. Single click to select your choice of background (Stars) in the example below and you should see your title clip successfully added to your project as shown below.

As soon as you add your title slide you can customize it by typing in your own text. Type in he following information with the name of the course and naming yourself director. Once you are done typing click on the Done link in the top right hand corner. You should now see your title added to your project window as shown below:

With your title successfully added proceed onto the next step. To set the duration of your Title credits, double-click on the Inspector (highlighted in yellow above) bar just above your clip and the following Inspector window will appear. Type in 5.0 seconds in the Duration: text box and click on Done. You will now see your title credits set to be 5 seconds in duration. On to the next step of importing your movie clips.

6. Import both video clips. To begin importing your video clips select Import>Movies from the File menu. This will bring up the following Import window. Open your Media folder and select the following options: o If you are working in a campus computer lab be sure to save your new IMovie event to the Temp Space as shown above.

o Single click to select the Create new Event: radio button and title your new event as shown above. o You should note here that you can select both videos before clicking on the Import button by holding down the Shift key on the keyboard, or you can import one video at a time. o Single click to select the Move Files, as this will move any existing clips into your new event folder. By doing this you will more easily be able to back up your work in progress and continue working on your project at different times. After clicking on the Import button you will see that your clips have been added to the EDIT Movie Project window as shown below:

7. Select movie content from your Imported clips and add them to the project timeline. Remember that the total length of your video needs to be within the seconds time range. When adding clips you may or may not want to add your full clip to your project. Due to the fact our complete movie has to be within the second time frame it is easier to select specific section of our clips that will add up to the correct time To begin adding your content single click at the approximate point where you would like to start your clip. This will bring up a yellow selection box with two available pull tabs which you can use to select your clip content. Now you can use those pull tabs to select specific content from the clip you have imported. Once you have the right clips selected single click to Add Selection to Project button and your chosen clip will be added to the project timeline.

Repeat the previous steps for both clips until you have sections from both clips in your timeline. Remember your full movie (including 10 seconds of credits) is up to seconds in length. With your content added to your project timeline proceed onto the next step to add your end credits. 8. Add your choice of end credits to your movie citing YouTube as the source of your clips.

To add your end credits to your movie single click to select the Titles button, select your style of credits, and click and drag to your Project timeline. In the example below the Scrolling Credits title has been selected. Be sure to drag your credits clip to the end of your project timeline and type in the following text. You can now proceed onto your next step adding your soundtrack.

9. Import your chosen.mp3 sound file to your project and add it to your movie. Note here that we want this audio file to fade in and fade out during your movie content and not your credits. Also it should replace any existing audio from your imported movie clips. 1. Remove existing audio from movie clips already imported. Note here that this step is only necessary if your existing movie clips have audio content. To remove any existing audio from your imported movie right-click on your clip in your project timeline and select Detach Audio from the context menu. You will now see two separate clips in your project timeline. To delete your audio content single-click to select your audio content and hit the Delete button on the keyboard.

Now if you it spacebar to preview your clips your movie will have no audio content. 2. To begin importing your audio.mp3 file into your movie you will first need to play your movie in ITunes so that your audio file will be added to IMovie audio library. Note: If you are completing this lab from home and already have an existing audio library in ITunes you can safely move onto the next step. To play your song in ITunes open your Media folder and double click on the audio file you downloaded at the beginning of this lab. Once ITunes has been launched and your audio starts playing you can quit ITunes right away. We just needed to add it to the audio IMovie library for the next step 3. Add your audio file to your IMovie project. Once back in IMovie (hint you can use Alt + Tab on the keyboard to cycle through the open applications) select the following menu options: o Single click to select the Show/Hide music button. o Single click on the ITunes drop down menu

o Single click to select the Music option to show the audio track you just played in ITunes as shown below. Once your audio file is available in the audio listing single click and drag to add to your project timeline in the same fashion to add your video files. Please not here that your Project timeline screen will change color and that the entire song will not be added. It will just play as long as the length of your existing video clips.

It is important to note here that you can only shorten a clip, not lengthen it, so if a clip is 10 seconds in length you cannot increase it to play for 12 seconds but you can shorten it to play for only 8 seconds. If you add a single picture file you can stretch out the length of the clip along the timeline to play as long as you want. Each clip does not have to be exactly 10 seconds in length; we simply want 20 seconds of movie combined from those 2 separate video clips. 4. Adjust your audio so that it fades in and fade when your movie is played. To begin adding your audio effect single click to the select the Inspector tool button available in the top left of your audio clip as shown below and select Audio Adjustments from the available drop down menu: Select Audio Adjustments from the available drop down menu. With the Audio Adjustments window open adjust your Fade In: and Fade Out: points for your audio to 5 seconds to match the durations of your

credits clips and click on Done. Your audio clip will now fade in and fade out automatically when your movie is played. 10. Add a visible transition between your two imported video clips. To begin adding your transition single click on Show / Hide Transitions button to view the available transition effects within IMovie. To preview your transition effect simple put your mouse over top and you will view a sample of the effect. To add the effect single-click on your desired effect (Mosaic as shown below) and click and drag to your Project timeline.

When adding your transition looking for a highlighted green line for where your transition will be placed. After you have added your transition you should see the transition effect in your Project timeline as shown below.

11. Export your completed project and save it n the proper format for assignment submission. If you like you can preview your movie by click inside your Project timeline window and select Play from beginning from the View menu. Once you have previewed your movie to begin exporting select Export Movie from the Share menu and the following export screen will appear. To properly export your movie and make it ready for submission: o Make sure to name your movie by typing in the Export As: field. o Change your save location to the Desktop in the Where: drop down menu. o And choose the appropriate size export option (Medium is recommended for most projects as it will later be suitable for upload to YouTube).

o Once all the above options have been added single click to select the Export button. Once your movie has finished exporting the complete movie will now be saved with the.m4v file extension and be ready for assignment submission. 12. Submit your completed EDIT202-Movie.m4v to the course Eclass/Moodle site. Before submitting your finished movie file it is highly recommended that you click and drag your finished product into your Media folder and back up your Media folder to a permanent and safe location (i.e. USB Stick or Your U of A online file space).
