I N T R O D U C T I O N Quick Start Welcome to the Transcoder manual. Most people leave reading the manual until last, this manual is written with that in mind! If you are familiar with the basic concepts of Time Code, jump to Chapter 2 which describes how to operate the Transcoder. If you are new to Timecode and it's use, this chapter offers some example applications. Please remember to return your product registration card, so that we can keep you informed of new developments. This Manual This manual is divided into the following sections: Chapter 1: Chapter 2: Chapter 3: Chapter 4: Introduction. Provides several Transcoder application examples. The Control Surface. Describes the operation of CDTC's front panel. The Output Panel. Describes the operation of the Transcoder rear panel. The Menus. Describes the operation of the Transcoder's menus. 7 Audio Dubbing When dubbing multi-track audio with timecode, the timecode signal cannot be copied directly as the audio processing circuitry degrades the signal. The following block diagram shows a suitable setup to overcome this problem. The Transcoder should be set to: Reader Source = LTC. Gen Ref = Read. Jam = Enabled. Jam mode = Reshape if master contains good timecode. Jam mode = Free if the master tape is likely to contain errors. 3 Audio Signals LTC In LTC Out Video Dubbing When copying video with timecode, the timecode signal must be regenerated for the same reasons as above. A further complication is caused by the need to ensure that the regenerated timecode remains synchronised to the video signal The following block diagram shows a suitable configuration. The Transcoder should be set to: Reader Source = LTC. Gen Ref = Vid. Jam = Enabled. Jam mode = Free or Link. Video & Audio Signals LTC In Mixed Sync LTC Out Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. 8 Off-Line Editing It is often desirable, when recording video, to have a second video tape with time code displayed (burnt in) over the video picture. The second tape can then easily be used for logging drop in and out points prior to an on-line edit. The following block diagram shows a suitable configuration. The Transcoder should be set to: Gen Ref = Video. Gen Standard = Match video standard in use. Jam = Disabled. Master Tape Off-line Tape Audio Video In Video Out LTC Out Insert Out LTC Out Audio Visual Show Control The following block diagram shows an audio-visual control system allowing stage lighting, video walls, laser disc players to be synchronised to a recorded CD. Reader Source = CD. Gen Ref = Xtal. Jam = Enabled. Jam mode = Link. Denon/Sony/Philips C-Through/Trax/BSC Navigator/ Pathfinder SP-DIF In LTC Out MIDI MTC Out Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. 9 T H E C O N T R O L S U R F A C E Over-view The control surface of the Transcoder can be divided into three sections: Keyboard. Alphanumeric Display. Discrete Display. Keyboard The keyboard operates as follows: ENTER When the Transcoder is displaying timecode, the Enter key accesses the Main Menu. If the menus are already active, the Enter key is used to accept the currently selected option. The current menu selection is enclosed in flashing arrow icons. ESC The ESC key is used to cancel the current menu selection and revert to time code display. ESC has no function when the Transcoder is displaying timecode. LEFT RIGHT The Left and Right Cursor keys are used to make selections from the menus. They are also used to move the cursor character when editing numeric registers such as Offset and Drop-Out Filter. They have no function when the Transcoder is displaying timecode. If both are held down whilst turning on power, the Transcoder's memory is reset to default values. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 9

UP DOWN The Up and Down Cursor keys are used to increment and decrement the cursor character when editing numeric registers such as Offset and Drop-Out Filter. They have no function when the Transcoder is displaying timecode. RUN The Run key resets the Generator to the Gen-Offset value (see Utils menu) and then starts the Generator running. The Run key may be operated remotely via the AUX connector. If the Generator is paused, Pause is cancelled. If the Generator is jammed to the Reader, Jam is disabled. PAUSE JAM The Pause key pauses the Generator at the current time. A flashing `P' icon is displayed to indicate pause active. A second key press cancels pause mode. If the Generator is jammed to the Reader, Jam is disabled. The Jam key enables the last selected Jam mode. The arrow lamp is illuminated to show Jam active. A second key press cancels Jam mode. Activating Jam mode causes the reader time to be copied to the Generator (the Generator offset is added). Operation is then defined by the selected Jam mode. If the Generator is paused, Pause mode is cancelled. USER Discrete Display Operation of the User key is defined in the Utils menu. The User key may be operated remotely via the AUX connector. The Discrete display section shows the current selections for Reader source, Jam enable and Generator Reference signal. CD LTC The CD lamp indicates that the Reader is connected to the SP-DIF input. The LTC lamp indicates that the Reader is connected to the longitudinal timecode input. MIDI The MIDI lamp indicates that the Reader is connected to the MIDI timecode input. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 10

JAM The JAM lamp illuminates to indicate that one of the Jam modes is active. READ The READ lamp illuminates to indicate that the Generator Reference (frame rate) is synchronised to the regenerated Reader frame rate. EXT The EXT lamp illuminates to indicate that the Generator Reference (frame rate) is synchronised to the external TTL tacho pulse input through the AUX connector. VID The VID lamp illuminates to indicate that the Generator Reference (frame rate) is synchronised to the external video or mixed sync input. XTAL The XTAL lamp illuminates to indicate that the Generator Reference (frame rate) is supplied by the internal crystal oscillator. The frequency of the crystal oscillator is adjusted to give the correct frame rate for the selected Generator Standard. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 11

T H E M E N U S This chapter provides a description of each menu option. The Main Menu is accessed by pressing the ENTER key. Menu options and sub menus are accessed by selecting the required entry with the cursor keys and pressing ENTER. The current Menu selection is shown enclosed in flashing arrow icons. Main menu The Main Menu provides access to all the programmable features of the Transcoder. The options are: >READ< GEN JAM DISP UTILS Accesses the Reader source selection sub-menu. Options include CD, LTC, MIDI. Accesses the Generator frame rate and clocking options sub menus. Used to define the manner in which Reader and Generator link together. Used to select an option from five timecode display formats. Accesses a range of specialised options including User Bits, Inserter position etc. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 16

Read menu >CD< LTC MIDI The READ menu allows selection of the timecode reader source signal. The options are: CD LTC The reader input is connected to the SP-DIF Phono on the rear panel. The reader will read absolute disc running time and track number from a CD player. The reader input is connected to the XLR3 on the rear panel. The reader will read all four standards of longitudinal timecode including user bits. The reader will auto-detect the timecode standard. READER CD LTC MIDI The current Reader Source is displayed on the front panel. MIDI The reader input is connected to the DIN5 on the rear panel. The reader will read all four standards of timecode encoded to the MIDI Quarter Frame Format. The reader will autodetect the timecode standard. The MIDI Loop (Thru) connector is not affected by this menu option and is active for all reader selections. Generator menu >REF< STANDARD The Generator Menu accesses two sub menus. These sub menus control the generator reference and standard settings. Generator Reference menu >READ< EXT VIDEO XTAL The Generator Reference menu controls the frame rate clock signal that is used to output timecode. The options are: Read The frame rate of the incoming timecode is regenerated and used to generate timecode. This option is most often used to copy timecode from tape to tape in non video applications. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 17

Ext Video The external tacho pulse input (from the AUX connecter) is used to generate timecode. This option is useful for generating timecode synchronised to film projectors and tape transports fitted with a pulse control track. The video input is used to generate timecode. This option is used for striping and copying timecode in all video applications. When this option is selected the video inserter output is enabled. Xtal An internal crystal oscillator is used to generate timecode. The crystal oscillator frame rate is set automatically to give the frame rate required by the Generator-Standard menu. Generator Standard menu >FILM< EBU DF SMPTE The Generator Standard menu controls the type of timecode generated. The options are: Read Film EBU DF SMPTE The Generator timecode standard is linked to the the Reader auto-detect standard. This option is very useful, as it guards against Reader and Generator being set to different standards when jamming. (Default setting). Timecode is generated to the Film standard with a frame count in the range 0 to 23. This standard should normally be used with a 24fps generator reference. This option is most useful for synchronising audio and video to film projectors. Timecode is generated to the EBU standard with a frame count in the range 0 to 24. This standard should normally be used with a 25fps generator reference. This option is used for European video applications. Timecode is generated to the SMPTE Drop Frame standard with a frame count in the range 0 to 29. This standard should normally be used with a 29.97fps generator reference. This option is used for American colour video applications. Timecode is generated to the SMPTE Non Drop Frame standard with a frame count in the range 0 to 29. This standard should normally be used with a 30fps generator reference. This option is used for American monochrome video applications. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 18

Jam menu >CHASE< LINK FREE ONCE SHAPE The Jam menu defines the manner in which Reader and Generator lock together. Jam mode is activated by pressing the JAM key and when a selection is made in this menu. Jam mode is disabled by pressing the Jam key a second time or by pressing the PAUSE or RUN keys. Jam enabled status is shown by the front panel arrow lamp. Jam-Chase Jam-Link Jam-Free The Generator follows the Reader exactly. Any errors read will be echoed to the Generator. This option is only useful for system setup and testing. The Generator follows the Reader after it has been processed for dropouts. A Drop-Out is simply defined as the Reader detecting two consecutive frames that are out of sequence. When a Reader Drop-Out is detected the Generator free runs, generating code to mask the error. This situation continues until one of two conditions is satisfied: i) If the Reader locks on to good code, the Generator will revert to the Reader code. ii) If the Generator free runs for the number of frames defined by the Drop-Out Filter (see Utils menu), the Generator will stop. This option is particularly useful for accurately copying low level or degraded timecode, when the Generator must stop if the Reader stops. It is also useful when reading CD timecode, to mask Drop-Outs caused by surface contamination. A side effect of this Jam option is that the Generator will always run on for the number of frames defined by the Drop-Out Filter, when the Reader has stopped. In reality this rarely causes a problem. The Generator follows the Reader after it has been processed for dropouts. When a Reader drop-out is detected the Generator free runs for the number of frames defined by the Drop-Out Filter. Any change in the Reader whilst the Drop-Out filter is running will be ignored. After the Drop-Out Filter has expired two possible conditions may occur: i) If good code is detected by the Reader, the Generator will re-jam. ii) If bad code is detected by the Reader, the Generator will continue to free run. When the Reader stabilises the Generator will re-jam. This option is useful for extending timecode on a tape. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 19

Jam-Once Jam-Shape The Generator and Reader are independent. When the JAM key is pressed, the Generator is updated with the current Reader Time. This option is useful for re-striping tape with blocks of non sequential timecode. It is also the most useful jam mode when Reader and Generator are set to different standards. The Generator output is connected to the Reader input via a wave-shaping circuit. All Reader and Generator settings are ignored in this mode of operation. Whatever appears at the Reader input is connected to the Generator output. This option is used to copy good timecode between tapes, correcting the signal degradation caused by the tape transport's audio circuitry. In this mode the Generator still operates and produces MIDI timecode. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 20

Display menu >DUAL< RDR-T GEN-T RDR-U GEN-U The Display menu provides five options controlling the type and format of displayed timecode: Dual Display In Dual display mode Reader timecode and Generator timecode are displayed simultaneously. 2 2 : 4 5 : : 4 5 : READER TIME GOOD READ CODE INDICATOR GENERATOR TIME Reader Timecode Display In Reader timecode display mode, Reader timecode and auto-detected reader standard are displayed. 23 Utils menu >OFFSET< FILTER U-JAM U-BIT The Utils menu provides access to a number of specialised setup parameters. Generator Offset The Generator Offset is a timecode number that is added to the Generator zero time. If Jam is disabled, this value is used when the Generator is reset. If Jam is enabled, this value is added to the Reader timecode. The value allowed for Generator Offset is defined by the current setting for Generator Standard. For example, if the Generator Standard is EBU, the maximum value in the frames field is 24. The default value is zero. The LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys are used to select a digit. The UP and DOWN cursor keys are used to increment and decrement the digit. Press ENTER to accept the value entered, or ESC to cancel the change. The Generator Offset affects both the LTC and MIDI timecode output. NEW GEN OFFSET: 2 2 : 4 5 : Dropout Filter The Dropout Filter is a decimal number in the range 0 to 250 frames. It is used in Jam mode. The Default value is 30 frames. The LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys are used to select a digit. The UP and DOWN cursor keys are used to increment and decrement the digit. Press ENTER to accept the value entered or ESC to cancel the change. DROP OUT FILTER: 025 User Jam The User Jam option defines how the User bits are generated in Jam mode. The default value is enabled. When User Jam is enabled (YES), the Reader user bits are transferred to the Generator. When User Jam is disabled (NO), the static Generator User Bits value is used. Programming new Generator User bits will disable User Jam. This control does not affect MIDI timecode output. USER JAM? >YES< NO Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 23

Generator User Bits The Generator User Bits register is an eight digit hexadecimal (0 to 9, A to F) number output with LTC. The number entered here has no intrinsic meaning and is often used to code a date onto tape. The default value is zero. Entering a value in this register disables User Jam. The LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys are used to select a digit. The UP and DOWN cursor keys are used to increment and decrement the digit. Press ENTER to accept the value entered, or ESC to cancel the change. This control does not affect the MIDI timecode output. USER BITS: A B E F User Key The User Key is our answer to the oft' heard cry of `Why didn't they put a button on the front for that'. This option defines the function of the User Key. The User Key can also be accessed remotely via the AUX Connector. The current options are: DISPLAY: Cycles through all five timecode display modes. (Default). RESET: Loads the Generator with the Generator Offset and pauses. PAUSE: Pauses Generator. RUN: Runs Generator. The USER Key is unrelated to the User Bits. >DISPLAY< PAUSE RUN RESET Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 24

Video Inserter This menu option provides access to three sub menus used to define the operation of the Video Inserter. The Video Inserter `burns' text (usually Generator Time) into a video image for off-line editing and logging purposes. The Video Inserter can also be used in non-synchronous mode (Gen-Ref is not video) as a remote timecode display. In this mode the letters `NS'' are displayed after the time. This mode should not be used for off-line editing. The three sub menus allow for: Display Type. Display Position. Display Colour. >TYPE< POSITION COLOUR Video Inserter Type This menu is used to select the type of information to be inserted into the video signal. The options are: >TIME< TIME+USER TEST DISABLE Time Time + User Test Disable The Generator Time is inserted into the video signal. The letters `NS' are displayed after the time code if video is not the Generator Reference. The Generator Time is inserted into the video signal. The letters `NS' are displayed after the time code if video is not the Generator Reference. The Generator User bits are displayed on the next line. A row of arrows is displayed on the top line of the video display. The direction of the arrows reverse every second and the position of each arrow is defined by the Generator frame number. This function is useful for identifying errors in received time code (use Jam-Chase). Any frame drop outs are identified by diamond icons remaining on the display. Clearly this function is only accurate when video is used as the Generator Reference. The Inserter output contains only video. Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd. Timecode Transcoder manual Page 25

Video Inserter Position This option is used to set the position of the timecode display on the Video Inserter output. The position can be set without viewing the Video as the character and line position is displayed on screen. The default position is the top left corner of the screen. The LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys are used to set the horizontal position. The UP and DOWN cursor keys are used to set the vertical position. INSERT CHAR: 03 LINE: 05 Video Inserter Colour This menu is used to set the colour of the inserted text. The options available include: Black characters on a white background.
