1 Ascension Vacation bidding Clarification The following Ascension bidding guide was created by Heather Harris (Wiseman) and the AFA Compass Scheduling Committee in a collaborative effort with Compass InFlight. We are providing this guide to Compass Flight Attendants as an eline while, at the same time, InFlight has pushed it to our tablets. This Ascension user guide was created to resolve the confusion that resulted from unanswered questions that the Ascension documentation does not address. These unanswered questions created massive confusion in both the Compass Flight Attendant and Compass Pilot ranks. If left unanswered InFlight and AFA Compass recognized that there would be massive fall out. Both Flight Attendants and Pilots would be seeing vacation awards, not based on seniority preference, but by a roll of the dice. Greetings All, We have had a number of questions regarding bidding vacations in Ascension, while the user guide covered many topics it is clear it did not provide a clear enough picture of the logic and/or strategy involved in the requesting process. Please find below a more detailed description of the request process which covers several typical examples and important points about bidding. This information was compiled with the help of AFA scheduling representatives who have been fielding many of the questions about bidding. We appreciate their effort and assistance in providing more clarification to all of our crewmembers. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! General information: Each request is an all or nothing bid. This means that multiple choices within a request don't represent your choices for just one single week of vacation, but for multiple weeks of vacation taken in preferential order. Your choices within a request should be limited to the amount of weeks vacation you have available: 1-7 days vacation: 1 choice per request 8-14 days of vacation: up to 2 choices per request days of vacation: up to 3 choices per request days of vacation: up to 4 choices per request Example: You have 21 days vacation, you can bid 3 choices (weeks) of vacation in 1 request. CAUTION! If you cannot hold all three weeks/choices in a single request, it will throw out the bid request and go to your next request. Page 1

3 An alternative strategy for bidding is to make separate requests with a single choice in each and to make as many request as needed in preferential order: Page 3

4 Partial weeks: It s important to note that full weeks are taken in preferential order over partial weeks. Example: You have 8-13 days vacation. Your vacation bids will be taken in this order Page 4

5 Bidding consecutively: Again remember, choices within a request are considered all or nothing. To achieve a consecutive award, your choices within a request should be limited to the amount of weeks vacation you have available, ie: you have 8-14 days vacation = 2 weeks/choices per request, days vacation = 3 weeks/choices per request. Example: I want my 10 days of vacation in June consecutively. Your bid might look like this: Page 5

6 Bidding separate weeks: The simplest way to bid is to have multiple requests with a single choice in each request. If your first request is not available it will move to your next request until all your vacation weeks (including partial weeks) are satisfied. Example: Page 6

7 If you bid multiple choices within a request, again keep in mind that your choices within a request don't represent your choices for just one single week of vacation, but for multiple weeks of vacation. You may want to make multiple choices within a request if you want to take your multi-week vacation in specific months. Example: You have 14 days vacation. Your wedding anniversary is on June 5th and you need to have surgery December 1st. In this scenario, both are important but your anniversary week is your 1st preference. You might bid this way: Page 7
