I hope these are useful. Nominet: As you know, Nominet is a private not for profit business with a public purpose constitution and a stated mission to promote the growth of a safe, secure UK internet. Any surplus generated by the company is donated to the Nominet Trust and we will be running the new.cymru and.wales registries in the same manner. UK internet users have a wide variety of choices of Top Level Domain, including.com,.net,.eu,.org etc as well as.uk. Nominet's stated objective is to maintain.uk as a secure and trusted space for UK internet users in this highly competitive environment. Businesses and consumers almost always register domain names through one of our,800 registrars (some large businesses and domain investors will register with us directly). The retail market for.uk domain name registrations is therefore highly competitive and the vast majority, if not all, of the registrars who offer.uk domain names registrations also offer registrations in other Top Level Domains such as.com,.net,.org etc. Prices: The main competition to domain name registrations in.uk comes from generic top level domain such as.com,.net or.org. There are many reasons why a company or individual may choose one of these generic TLDs but price is not one of them as registrations in.uk are generally cheaper than these generic TLDs. Nominet basic wholesale price for registrations of domain names in.uk is.50 per year ( 3.50 if the domain is only registered for one year). This price level has been maintained by Nominet since September 1999 which is a real terms price cut of around 46% over 14 years. In contrast the wholesale price of a.com domain name is $7.85 (c. 4.9), a.net domain name is $5.6 (c. 3.5), and a.org domain name is $8.5 (c. 5.17). These prices are regulated by ICANN with input from the US Department of Commerce. New competition: The competitive landscape of the domain name industry is about to change significantly. There are currently more than 0 generic Top Level Domains in addition to the 50+ country codes (some of which are open for generic registrations such as.co and.me). ICANN s gtld programme has seen applications for over 1,400 new Top Level Domains, including around 960 generic strings such as.shop and.web etc. There have also been four applications for new geographic Top Level Domains in the UK. While Nominet has applied for.cymru and.wales, other bodies have applied for.london and.scot. These new Top Level Domains are expected to become available over the next 6 18 months and will offer even more choice for businesses and consumers looking for the best domain name for their business. 1
