1 The Trailtalk social networking site is an excellent tool for groups as it provides an easy way to communicate with your members and, if you wish, promote your activities to the wider trails community. Groups can be formal e.g. incorporated groups such as The Perth Bushwalkers Club; or industry groups, such as the Trails Reference Panel Groups can also be informal e.g. you may have a group of friends that you paddle/walk with regularly and you wish to post photos and discuss where to meet next within your social group EASY CONTACT AND SHARING A key advantage to creating your own group is that you can your members simply by sending a broadcast message. Members can have discussions, post blogs and share photos within their own group, as well as contribute to the activity happening on the public site. EVENTS You can promote an event publicly so that all Trailtalk members can view it, or privately, so it can only be seen to invited members e.g. where you ll meet up for your next bike ride. CROSS-PROMOTION Bushwalkers may also be interested in canoeing, or bike riding, and vice-versa. Trailtalk caters to all trail users so groups and members can be informed of what s happening on WA s trails in one convenient spot. 2 STEP 1: Sign up your club/ organisation to become a member of Trailtalk STEP 1: Continued STEP 2: Set up the home page for your club/ organisation Your club s/ organisation s My Page is the starting point for you to add content (including photo s videos, discussions, blog entries, personal messages, add your profile photo and manage your Trailtalk site preferences.) From here you can personalise your page, manage s and notifications you receive from the Trailtalk website and upload information you want to share with the Trailtalk Community. Page 2
3 STEP 3: Upload a profile picture/ logo When joining the network, you have the option to upload a profile picture as you join the site. You can even use your company/club logo as your profile picture as illustrated above (use of Bibbulmum Track Foundation logo) To change your profile photo, click on the "Settings" link in the right column of the page. Next to the "Profile Photo" field, click the "Upload a photo" button. Click the "Browse" button to find your image on your computer. Photo should be sized to 175 x 175 pixels square. STEP 3: Continued STEP 4: Creating a group Groups are a great way to meet other members with the same interests as you. You can invite anyone to join your group, even people who haven't yet joined the site! To create a group, go to the Groups tab and click the link at the top right of the page to "Add a group." Page 3
4 STEP 4: Continued Next, fill in information about your group. Give your group a name and be sure to upload a group image that's roughly square in size. Fill out a description for your group, which members will see when looking for groups to join. If your group has another website, or a location, you can add it here! In the right side of the page, choose which features your group will have. You can add a comment wall, discussion forum, text box, and RSS reader to your group. Don't forget to choose the privacy settings for your group! You can allow anyone to join the group, or moderate membership. If you choose to moderate membership, new members will have to apply to join and you'll be able to review their request before they can join. You can allow members to invite other people to join and allow people to request membership if you'd like. If you turn off both of these options, the group will be invite-only - and you'll be the only one who can send invites to join the group. Finally, choose whether or not members of your group can send broadcast messages to the whole group. Click "Add Group" and your group will be added to the site! STEP 5: Inviting people to join your group To invite people to join your group, select the Invite More People tab. Page 4
5 To invite people to join your group you can: Import your contact list from a web address book Enter addresses in manually Invite your friends from the Trailtalk site or ; Import your contact list from an address book application If you would like to send people a message with your invitation to join the group it is recommended that you select the enter addresses manually option as illustrated below STEP 6: Adding an event To add an event select the Events tab in the top right corner. Then click on the Add an event tab further down the page STEP 6: Continued Fill in the required fields for your event. Required fields are marked with a red bar. You will also need to upload a photo for the event. Once you have filled in the required fields click Create event Page 5
