1 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 1/18 Starting IPCheck Server Monitor To start IPCheck Server Monitor Click on the IPCheck Server Monitor icon on your desktop or point your browser to the hosted version at Enter your login information Upon successful validation of your credentials, IPCheck Server Monitor 4 will be up and running Adding a Group Once you ve started IPCheck Server Monitor, the first step is to add a new group. To add a group Select the Add Group option from the menu toolbar at the top of the page click the Add New Group link at the bottom of the server list. This opens the Group Data Window. Name enter the name of the group Comments enter a description of the group

2 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 2/18 Monitoring Status use the drop-down to set the group to o Active o Inactive When finished select the OK Button to save your group. Adding a Network Resource Once you have the group created, you need to add a network resource in that group. To add a new network resource Select the link under the Group you would like to add a sensor to. Or click the icon of the group you want to add the server to Or click the Add Server link in the top toolbar This opens the Server Data Window.

3 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 3/18 Associated Group use the drop-down menu to select a group to which to add this server Name the name of the server Comments a description of the server Monitoring status use the drop-down menu to select the status of the server o Active o Inactive Server Data o DNS Name (or IP Address) enter the DNS name or IP Address of the server to be monitored (it is recommended to enter a DNS name, this way with each check also the correct DNS resolution of this name will also be checked automatically) o Location enter a descriptive name of the server location o Icon select an icon to represent the server When you have filled out all the appropriate information click the OK Button to save your server. Adding a Sensor With a group and network resource defined, the last step in putting IPCheck Server Monitor to use is to add one or more sensors to the network resource. To add a sensor Click the icon of the server you want to add the sensor to Or click the Add Sensor link in the top toolbar This opens the Sensor Selection Window.

4 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 4/18 The first step in adding a sensor is to select the type of sensor you would like to use by clicking the appropriate radio button. Options include: o PING--Sends standard PING to the server/device. o PORT--ICMP ping to check any TCP service. o HTTP--Simple HTTP/HTTPS request. o HTTP Global--HTTP request time measured from various locations around the globe. (cannot be used for a free account) o HTTP Advanced--Advanced HTTP Sensor (features content check, proxy and authentification settings). (cannot be used for a free account) o HTTP Transaction--Check several pages in sequence (e.g. shopping cart). (cannot be used for a free account)

5 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 5/18 o DNS--Checks DNS server. o SMTP--Checks SMTP server. o POP3--Checks POP3 server. o FTP--Checks FTP server. o SNMP Reads SNMP values of the device. o CUSTOM Custom sensors (e.g. scripts etc.) See the Sensor Types in Detail section for more information. Once you have made your selection click on the OK Button to continue adding the sensor. This opens the Sensor Details Window.

6 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 6/18 Associated Server use the drop-down menu to select a server to which to attach this sensor Name enter a descriptive name for the sensor Comments enter a description for the sensor (i.e., what it does or when it will check) Monitoring status use the drop-down to set the status of the sensor. Options include o Active o Inactive Interval use the drop-down to select an available interval. Warning level specify a time (in seconds) when the response time of the sensor should generate a warning notification. If you have the On Warning Notification set to active, this will determine when the notification is sent. Timeout specify a time (in seconds) when the sensor should stop trying to accomplish its objective and send a failure notification Notifications o On Error use the drop-down to select if this level of notification is on and what IPCheck Server Monitor should do o On Warning use the drop-down to select if this level of notification is on and what IPCheck Server Monitor should do o On OK use the drop-down to select if this level of notification is on and what IPCheck Server Monitor should do o On Escalation use the drop-down to select if this level of notification is on and what IPCheck Server Monitor should do Click the OK Button when finished to add the sensor. Modifying Notification Settings Now that you have a sensor (or two) up and running, you need to make sure that you will be notified by IPCheck Server Monitor in the best manner possible. To modify your notification settings Click the My Account Button from the menu toolbar. This will open the My Account Window.

7 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 7/18 o Under the Notifications Heading you will see your default notification. o To add a new notification click the Add another notification option. o To edit a notification select the Edit Button next to the notification that you would like to change or click the name of the notification. o This will open the Notification Data Window.

9 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 9/18 Basic Data o Name enter a name for the notification o Comments enter a description for the notification o Monitoring Status use the drop-down menu to select the state of the notification. Options include! Active! Inactive o Dependency use the drop-down menu to select a sensor to depend on. If this sensor is down no notifications will be sent (e.g. it does not make sense to send a notification if a server somewhere in the Internet cannot be reached simply because your DSL line is down). See the Dependencies in Detail section for more information! o Notification Status use the drop-down menu to select the state of the notification. Options include! Active! Inactive o To Address Enter the address where the notification will be sent. To send the to multiple addresses simply enter all addresses separated by a comma "," o Message Subject and Message Body Enter the subject and the message body of the notification. This message can include basic text as well as IPCheck Server Monitor Custom Message Tags. These tags allow you to include detailed environmental information. For more information, see the Notification Message Tags Section. o Priority Use the drop-down to select the priority of this message. Options include:! Highest! High! Normal! Low! Lowest. SMS/Pager o Note: In order to use the SMS option you must set up the SMS account in the administration control panel! o Note for the hosted version: In order to use the SMS option you must upgrade your account to a full account! o Notification Status use the drop-down menu to select the state of the notification. Options include

Inactive o Country Code enter the country Code of the mobile phone/pager number (e.g. "1" for USA, "33" for UK, "49" for Germany etc.) o Number enter the mobile phone/pager number (without a leading "0") o Message Enter the message text of the notification. This message can include basic text as well as IPCheck Server Monitor Custom Message Tags. These tags allow you to include detailed environmental information. For more information, see the Notification Message Tags Section. ICQ o Note: In order to use the ICQ option you must set up the ICQ account in the administration control panel! o Notification Status use the drop-down to specify the status of the ICQ notification. Options include:! Active (ICQ notification is on)! Inactive (ICQ notification is turned off). o ICQ# Enter the ICQ number to send the message to o Message Enter the message text of the notification. This message can include basic text as well as IPCheck Server Monitor Custom Message Tags. These tags allow you to include detailed environmental information. For more information, see the Notification Message Tags Section. Once you have entered all of the appropriate information click the OK Button to save the notification. Adding a New User With everything set up, it s time to add a user who can manage servers and groups (so that you don t have to do it all yourself). To add a new user From the Account Homepage, click the My Account Button in the toolbar. This opens the My Account Window.

11 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 11/18 From the settings heading click the Administration Link. This opens the Administration Window. Click the Add User Link. This opens the User Data Window.

Password the password associated with the /login name. Coupon code if you have been provided a coupon code for ordering service, enter it here (hosted version only) First Name the account holder s first name Last Name the account holder s last name Company the account holder s company Street the account holder s street address Zip the account holder s zipcode City the account holder s city Country the account holder s country State the account holder s state Phone the account holder s phone Fax the account holder s fax VatID the account holder s vatid (only for purchases made in an EU country) Timezone the account holder s timezone Report Schedule use the drop-down menu to select a frequency of report generation Latency for warnings specify a time (in seconds) after a sensor has reached its warning threshold when the warning notification will be sent Latency for errors specify a time (in seconds) after a sensor has reached its error status when the warning notification will be sent Latency for escalations specify a time (in seconds) after a sensor has reached its escalation threshold when the warning notification will be sent Credit Card enter the account holder s billing information (hosted version only) o Card select the credit card type for this account o Number enter the account holder s credit card number o Name enter the account holder s name as it appears on the credit card o Signature enter the three or four digit card verification number as it appears on the back (Mastercard/Visa) or front (American Express) of the credit card o Valid Until (Month) use the drop-down menu to select what month the credit card expires o Valid Until (Year) use the drop-down menu to select what year the credit card expires

14 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 14/18 o Currency the currency of the transaction (based upon what country was selected in the account information above). Click the OK Button when finished Viewing Messages and Generating Reports With your IPCheck Server Monitor humming along, all you need to do is keep track of network resource status messages and, occasionally, generate a report. Viewing status messages is carried out right from the IPCheck Server Monitor home page in the Activity Messages Window and Error Messages Window. To view additional messages, simply click on the More Button in the appropriate window. Generating reports provides you graphical illustrations of sensor activity. To generate a report Click the Link of the sensor's name for the sensor for which you would like to create a report. This will open the Generate Report Window.

16 IPCheck Server Monitor Guided Tour 16/18 The Report Generation Window lists the following information: o Server name, Server group,server Location, Server Comments: As entered during configuration o Sensor name, Sensor type: As entered during configuration o Last Check: The date and time of the last request sent to this sensor o Last Good: The date and time of the last successful request sent to this sensor o Last Request Result: The result of the last request sent to this sensor o Last Request time: The request time of the last request sent to this sensor o Report Date: The date and time this report was created on o Sensor History: This Graph shows the hourly averages of the request times and the number of failed requests during the last 72 hours. To generate a customized report, you can specify the following information: o Type select the type of report you would like generated.! Graph! Value list o Graphing: Select the type of graph you want to have created! Single Values: Draws a graph for all individual results (recommended for time spans up to 2 days)! Hourly Averages: Draws a graph with the hourly averages of the monitoring results (recommended for time spans of up to 14 days)! Daily Averages: Draws a graph with the daily averages of the monitoring results (recommended for time spans of more than 14 days) o Sensor use the drop-down menu to select the sensor for which you would like a report generated. o Compare IPCheck Server Monitor allows you to generate reports that compare different data. To create a comparison report! Use the drop-down menu to select a group, server, or sensor! If you don t want to generate comparison data, select the None Option. o Start select the start date for the report. o End select the end date for the report. When finished click the Generate Report Button. This will open the Report for Sensor Window.
