1 Online Instructions for Written Composition Benchmark This document is a supplement to the benchmark written composition instructions that were shipped with the student test booklets. These instructions will only address how to enter the developmental writing stages (K-2) and the overall holistic ratings online. Scantrons will not be printed or scanned. Specific directions for how to administer the writing benchmarks to Grades K-2 students will be contained within the test administrator manuals. All teachers for Grades 3-11 will use the TAKS writing rubric to score their students writing compositions. Grades 1-11 will test in November 2010 and Grade K will test in January 2010, as noted on the testing calendar. Please enter the online ratings by 4:30pm on Friday, November 19, Results will be posted to MyData Portal. (Please refer to the September 24, 2010 action memo from the Reading Department). BEFORE YOU BEGIN The following steps should be completed by teachers before attempting to enter the ratings from the writing benchmark compositions. 1. Activation of user account to access MyData Portal. 2. Successful log in using the correct user name and password. 3. Student writing samples that have been reviewed and assessed. 4. Review the writing rubrics that will be used to score the comping. Rubrics for Grades K-2 will arrive with the testing materials shipped to your campus. Contact your test coordinator to activate your MyData Portal account. 2. Contact your campus account manager to unlock your account after several failed log in attempts. 3. Reset your password, if you forgot it or it is invalid

2 (Step 1) ENTERING YOUR SCORES ONLINE - Access the benchmark web site at: - This web site is ONLY accessible from a Dallas I.S.D. Intranet computer. - Click on the button marked TEACHER LOGIN. Local Assessment Office Home Page (Step 2) - Enter your user name and the correct password. - This log on is the same user information used for MyData Portal access. - Click the Log On button. 3 Entering your scores online cont. (Step 3) - Verify that the corresponding employee and school information is correct. - Report any errors to your campus test coordinator immediately. - Click on the Written Composition button. Elementary Application Page - or - Secondary Application Page - 3 -

5 Entering your scores online cont. (Step 3) cont. - A pop-up window appears to ensure that your correct class section was chosen. o Click OK if correct. o Click CANCEL if incorrect. (Step 4) Grades K-2 only - Verify that your class roster is correct for the selected homeroom. - To remove students who are not in your class, click the Delete button. - To add students who are missing from your class, scroll down, below the line number of the last student, and type in the ID, Last Name, and First Name. Click the Add button to submit. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the Language. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the Developmental Writing Stage. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the Overall Holistic Rating. - Click the Submit button to forward your final entries. (Step 4) cont.- Grades 3-6 only - Verify that your class roster is correct for the selected homeroom. - To remove students who are not in your class, click the Delete button. - To add students who are missing from your class, scroll down, below the line number of the last student, and type in the ID, Last Name, and First Name. Click the Add button to submit. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the Language. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the Developmental Writing Stage. - Click the drop down arrow and choose the correct Overall Holistic Rating. - Check the box that identifies your observations of your class s writing traits. NOTE: This information is for Reading Department internal use only, and will not be displayed within MyData Portal. - Click the Submit button to forward your final entries. (Step 4) cont.- Secondary grades only - Verify that your class roster is correct for the selected course. - Middle schools with Grade 6 will not have a column for Language. - To remove students who are not in your class, click the Delete button. - To add students who are missing from your class, scroll down, below the line number of the last student, and type in the ID, Last Name, and First Name. Click the Add button to submit. - Click the drop down arrow and highight the correct Overall Holistic Rating. - Click the Submit button to forward your final entries. - Check the box that identifies your observations of your class s writing traits. 8 FINAL NOTES - Resolve any log in problems immediately. This will save you time on the backend. If you do not have an account profile for MyData Portal, contact your test coordinator immediately. - Ensure that all of your students have written their names on the front cover of the benchmark, and that all tests are accounted for. - Review your results within MyData Portal. Submit any reqeusts for corrections to your test coordinator. - This web site and online entry system are not managed by the Dallas I.S.D. TAC.
