What is Logbook of The World? ARRL's Logbook of the World (LoTW) system is a repository of log records submitted by users from around the world.
What is Logbook of The World? When both participants in a QSO submit matching QSO records to LoTW, the result is a QSL that can be used for ARRL award credit.
What is Logbook of The World? Logbook of the World can accommodate every possible user scenario. Home Portable Mobile Maritime QSL Managers DXpedition or whatever, LoTW can be setup to properly process your logs and match QSOs for all of your operations.
Is LoTW Secure? To minimize the chance of fraudulent submissions to LoTW, all QSO records must be digitally signed using a digital certificate obtained from ARRL.
What about software? LoTW uses software called TQSL. TQSL is free to download and use. TQSL works with: MS Windows Mac OS X
What about software? Trusted QSL contains two programs 1. TQSL CERTIFICATES TQSL CERT is for requesting and managing your digital certificates 2. TQSL TQSL is used to electronically sign your logs and manage you stations geographic information such as US State, County, Grid square, Zones, IOTA, etc.
How much does it cost? Logbook of The World is FREE to all radio amateurs around the world. Membership in ARRL is not required. Users may upload logs and view data anytime with no charges or fees.
What About Application Fees? When applying for awards users pay the appropriate application fees and QSO fees. This is no different than when making a paper application for an award.
What About QSL Cards? LoTW does not replace QSL collecting. ARRL QSL Bureau is still a member benefit.
What About QSL Cards? LoTW saves money and time. No postage or IRCs. No QSL card printing expense. No waiting for QSL cards
What can I do with LoTW?
What can I do with LoTW? Apply for awards Track DXCC credits Track WAS credits Track VUCC credits View award Matrix Search QSOs and QSLs View QSL Details
How is LoTW different than e-qsl or other online QSL services? LoTW uses private key and public key technology. Data uploaded to the system is validated & secure. Log files must be signed by the user.
How is LoTW different than e-qsl or other online QSL services? LoTW users cannot simply dump log files into the system. There are no paper cards printed that have the potential to be altered.
How is LoTW different than e-qsl or other online QSL services? LoTW validation upholds the integrity of ARRL awards. LoTW is constantly comparing uploaded data for matches.
Trusted QSL files. TQ5 file is a certificate request. TQ6 file is a certificate response. TQ8 file is a signed log file.
TQ5 Certificate Request LoTW users enter their information using the TQSL Certificate program.
TQ5 Certificate Request The TQ5 request is uploaded to the LoTW system via the web or to
TQ6 Certificate Response Sent via from LoTW or download from your user account. Download is available for users who cannot receive a TQ6 file attachment in their . This is not a complete certificate and cannot be used to recover your certificate.
A TQ6 matches the TQ5 request. Think of the TQ5 and TQ6 like a train ticket where both halves must match.
TQ6 and TQ5 files are used one time only. Like burnt matches these files have no use after a gold ribbon certificate is obtained.
All certificates are managed in the TQSL Certificates program. There is no limit to the number of certificates you can manage in TQSL Certificates
TQ8 file is a signed log file Log files must be signed by the user certificate. Trusted QSL will sign ADIF or Cabrillo file formats. Users cannot simply dump log files into LoTW.
What Makes Up A TQ8 file? The TQ8 file contains: 1. Your call sign 2. Your DXCC entity 3. The QSO information (station worked, band, time & date.) 4. Your geographic information (US State, county, grid square, zones, etc.)
Think of a TQ8 as a complete QSL card. The TQ8 File contains: 1. Your call and DXCC entity. 2. QSO information. 3. Your geographic information.
What Makes Up A TQ8 file? Your callsign and DXCC entity is provided by your certificate.
What Makes Up A TQ8 file? The QSO info such as the station worked, date, time, band and mode is extracted from the ADIF file.
QSO Dates By using the correct QSO date(s) on your certificate TQSL knows which portion of a log belongs to a specific call sign.
What Makes Up A TQ8 file? Geographic information is provided by your station location.
Station Locations LoTW users supply geographic information about their operating to a STATION LOCATION
Station Locations You may have as many station locations as you need to accommodate your operating.

LoTW WAS Accounts Click DETAILS to see the details of this QSO.
LoTW WAS Accounts This QSO is from my operation in Pennsylvania. The rules for this account will only include QSOs from operations in Connecticut. This QSO does not match the rules for this account.!m*
LoTW WAS Accounts Black check box is a QSO that LoTW selected for the award in the cell to the right. White box lets you select a QSO for the award in the cell to the right. Checking a white box will unselect the QSO that has been auto selected for this award.
LoTW & VUCC
LoTW VUCC Accounts ARRL Logbook of The World can now accept QSOs for the VUCC and Fred Fish Memorial awards.
LoTW VUCC Accounts To comply with the VUCC rules all QSOs for a VUCC award must be made within a 50 mile radius.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Therefore you must create a separate VUCC award account for any operation outside of a 50 mile radius.
LoTW VUCC Accounts You do not have to create separate accounts for each band that you operated from a geographic location within a 50 mile radius. LoTW will manage you band awards for you in each account.
LoTW VUCC Accounts For example: You normally operate from home FN20 but you also operated portable from EL97.
LoTW VUCC Accounts You will have to create two separate VUCC accounts so that the QSOs you made from EL97 are not credited to your home operation from FN20.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Creating a VUCC award account is just like creating your Worked All States account in LoTW.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Accounts must have rules in order to tell the LoTW system how to select QSOs for a particular award.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Creating a VUCC award account is easy and only takes a few minutes. Let s get started.
LoTW VUCC Accounts After logging into your LoTW user account select AWARDS then select CREATE NEW VUCC AWARD ACCOUNT.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Give your VUCC award account a name. If you operate from more than one location it makes sense to include a geographic reference in the account name in order to distinguish your accounts. In this example we named the account W3IZ CT Click SAVE ACCOUNT CHANGES
LoTW VUCC Accounts Notice that you can delete this account from this screen. Click Add Rule to QSO Set
LoTW VUCC Accounts Use the drop down menu to select the rule that you want to apply to this QSO set. Once you ve selected a rule click the ADD RULE button
LoTW VUCC Accounts Select the information that applies to this rule. In this example it is grid square information that we see in the menu. After selecting the grid square click CHANGE
LoTW VUCC Accounts Because several grid squares are within the 50 mile radius rule we will ADD RULE to add the other grids that apply to this VUCC award account. Note: These are grid squares from where you operated. NOT the grids of the stations that you worked.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Because any of these rules apply we will change ALL to ANY. Now the rules read OR instead of AND. Click SAVE ACCOUNT CHANGES to lock in your rules.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Now your Award Credit Matrix will be populated with QSOs that match your rules. Remember, if you do not set your rules or have rules that conflict LoTW will not know how to select your QSOs for your award. LoTW only knows what you tell it, not what you meant to say.
LoTW VUCC Accounts Here is how an active VHFer s accounts would look like.
