We selected Social Studies, then clicked GO. The topic tree for the subject area appears. Each main topic contains a list of subtopics. For example, note that the History topic at the top contains four subtopics: Early Peoples & Civilizations, Important Historical Periods, Individual & Group Contributions and Technology & Science. To open these subtopics, click the small arrow ( ) next to each. We clicked the arrow next to Important Historical Periods. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 9

The results folio includes Best of Web Links, bigchalk Library Articles and bigchalk Media Resources. To return to the Integrated Classroom main page for your grade level, click browse in the upper right-hand corner. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 11
b. Searching for Resources In addition to browsing for resources, Integrated Classroom also allows you to find things using keywords. Click search in the upper-right hand corner to begin. To begin, enter a word or words that describe what you re looking for in the search box. In this example, we re interested in weather. Type this keyword into the subject search box. Click GO. Several results appear. We clicked Weather to continue. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 12
A folio of Integrated Classroom resources appears. In most cases, the keyword(s) you searched for will be easy to find on this top-level results page. Note that the keyword earthquakes appears in several entries above. Sometimes the keyword(s) may also be found in the name of a Best of Web link under one or more subtopics. In these cases, open each subtopic by clicking the small arrows ( ) to find your keyword(s). Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 13
c. Integrated Classroom Resource Examples After completing a search, a folio of resources appears. Note than when you click a link, it will be displayed in a second browser window. When you re finished exploring the material, close this second window to return to your results. These results include: Best of Web Links Click a topic on the left (or click the small arrow) to display a list of sites. We clicked Bill of Rights. Click a link next to each bullet point to access a site. We clicked Adding the Bill of Rights. A new window will appear with the Web site inside. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 14
To return to your search results, click close window near the top. (A small number of the sites that we link to will appear in a new window without this link at the top. To return to your search results in this case, simply close the window.) bigchalk Library Articles Click a document title to display a document or resource from bigchalk Library. We clicked Hamilton, Alexander. A new browser window will appear with the document inside. To return to your search results, close the new window by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window. bigchalk Media Resources Click a link to display an image or audio/video clip. We clicked Inauguration of George Washington. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 15
A new browser window will appear with the media inside. To return to your search results, close the new window by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window. Link to bigchalk Reference Database If your school subscribes to a bigchalk reference database like bigchalk Library or elibrary, you can connect to a larger collection of articles related to the topic by clicking GO in the bottom right-hand corner of any results page. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 16
IV. Using bicmarks Integrated Classroom contains links to thousands of articles, maps, photographs, sound bites, video clips and more. After completing a few searches, you ll want to bookmark the resources you find so you ll have an easier time returning to them later. That s where bicmarks come in. You can save links to two things using bicmarks -- folios and individual resources. 1. Folios (also known as bicfolios) are collections of resources related to a textbook chapter or subject/topic. These resources appear together on a search or browse result screen, as in this example: Note the small green icon in the top-right corner. Click add to insert a link to this folio on your bicmark clipboard. As soon as you click the icon, a new one will appear, allowing you to remove this folio from your clipboard: Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 17
2. Resources are individual Best of Web links, bigchalk Multimedia clips and bigchalk Library articles. These resources appear when you click a link to an item within a folio. For instance, here we clicked a Best of Web link to Lipids: General Properties. Note the small green icon in the top-right corner. Click add to insert a link to the current resource on your bicmark clipboard. (A small number of the sites and lessons that we link to will appear in a new window without a bicmarks link at the top. In this case, you can use the standard bookmarking function of your browser. However, resources recorded in this manner will not appear on your bicmark clipboard.) As soon as you click the icon, a new one will appear, allowing you to remove this resource from your clipboard: Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 18
To access your bicmarks, click bicmarks in the upper right-hand corner of a page. Your bicmark clipboard will appear. Here you may click each link to connect to a folio or resource, or remove items from your clipboard. To remove an item, click a check box to the far right of the item under select. Click DELETE near the top. You may click the boxes next to several folios or pages and click DELETE to remove them simultaneously. (Plus, you can click the select all box to the right of DELETE to check all of the boxes to remove them all at once.) Once your bicmark clipboard contains your final selections, save it immediately. IMPORTANT: The bicmarks you create as a student user will go away when you leave (log out of) Integrated Classroom. To keep your bicmarks for later use, be sure to save your results or them to yourself every time you finish using Integrated Classroom. Click SAVE near the top to continue. A Save As box will appear. You may save your bicmark file to a diskette or your hard drive to continue. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 19
You may also click to send a copy of your bicmarks to any address. You ll be asked to type your name, the address you re sending it to and any message you wish to include. Click GO to send the . Sending yourself a copy of a bicmark file via gives you the power to save direct links to folios and resources on your computer. The ed bicmark files are formatted in HTML, which means you can open and use the links at a later time through your Web browser (Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer) or most word processing programs (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect). You can also access a menu of bicmark files created by teachers in your school. Click PUBLIC bicmarks near the top of the bicmarks screen. You may sort this menu by title, subject or creation date. Click these words to re-sort the list. Click the down arrow next to each name to access that person s stored public bicmarks files. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 20
Click a title to open a file. You may click on the folios and resources stored in this bicmarks file, select Save As to save a copy of the file to your computer or click to send a copy of the file to any address. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 21
V. Finding Tests Integrated Classroom makes it easy for your teachers to create assignments and tests that you can print or . These tests may contain learning resources and questions that are directly related to the state or national learning assessment tests you ll take this year. To access the tests your teacher has created, log into Integrated Classroom, click your grade level then select the bicmarks link in the upper right-hand corner. A list of your school s bicmarks files will appear. Click on the name of your teacher to continue. You ll see a list of both bicmarks and tests. (The tests have small orange T s next to them.) Click a test link to continue. Integrated Classroom Student User Guide 22
You may choose to print the test, or it to yourself or a classmate. Your test may contain only questions for you to answer, or it may also have links to articles, Web sites or other items to help you learn more about the topics covered in the assessment. 24 VI. Citation Guide Here are step-by-step instructions for citing the information you find using bigchalk research products and the Internet in your assignments or research paper. Step One: Keep track of the information you find. Write everything down in a notebook or create a marked list. To save paper and time, try sending yourself the information via . Keep everything in a single folder on your computer, or in a three-ring binder for safekeeping and teacher review. Step Two: Create your citations.
