Welcome This is a small packet of information concerning some of the simpler uses of technology in the department, how to transfer files, change your password, that sort of thing. In this department, we have 25+ imac computers with LCD Flat Panel displays, which have installed on them Mac OS , each of the Flat Panel Display models is equipped with a CD-RW drive. Six of these are currently in the Tech Lab, and eight are currently in the seminar room. The following applications are installed on all imac Machines: Adobe Acrobat Professional CS3 Flash CS3 Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Flash Video Encoder CS3 Fetch Microsoft Office 2004 (Excel, imovie Powerpoint, Word, Entourage) itunes Quicktime Player iphoto Realone Player Dreamweaver CS3 Safari Fireworks CS3 Windows Media Player We have 6 Dell Windows Machines in the Tech Lab. They are equipped with 250MB internal Zip Drives, 48x CD-RW drives, 512MB of ram, and Windows XP.
How to use FTP on a Macintosh Computer This step-by-step assumes you are using Fetch, an FTP program you can download for free from the University at click Software Downloads on the right. Select the Finder icon in your Dock. 1. In the left pane, select Applications 2. In the right pane, locate and double click Fetch Folder 3. Double click the Fetch icon 4. Click Cancel 5. Select the Fetch menu at the top of the screen and select Preferences 6. Click the Firewall tab at the top. 7. Make sure Use Passive mode transfers is NOT CHECKED. 8. Click OK. 9. Click File-New Connection 10. In the Host box enter slis.uiowa.edu in the User ID box, enter your mingo username, and the password in the box below it. 11. Click OK 12. The program should connect to the mingo server and present you with a list of files currently in your account. 13. To upload a new file, click the Put Files button 14. In the new window that appears, browse to find your file(s) to upload. (You can select multiple items but holding down the Apple key (just to the left of the space bar). 15. Once you have selected your files, click Choose. 16. You will be presented with a box, unless you want to change the name of the file, click OK 17. The file will be uploaded to the server, congratulations! 18. When you are done uploading files, go to the Fetch menu, and select Quit Fetch.
WS_FTP from the Tech Lab If you wish to upload files from the tech lab, we already have them configured to connect to mingo, all you ll need is your username and password. 1. Double Click the Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional Icon on the desktop 2. You ll be presented with a login prompt that looks like the image below. Enter your mingo username and password and click OK. Wait for a moment and it will connect, allowing you to access your files. 3. Close the program when you re finished, and your username and password will not be saved on the machine.
WS_FTP Pro From Home Mingo is the name of the departmental server. The easiest way to access files on mingo is using a program called an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. As a student at the University of Iowa, you are given free access to such a program, called WS_FTP Pro. You can download it at or it is installed on all the windows machines in the tech lab. 1. Click the Start button. Select Programs WS_FTP Pro WS_FTP Pro. 2. Click Connect in the upper left corner. 3. Click Create Site 4. In the Site Name box enter Mingo and click next 5. Leave the Connection type as FTP and click next. 6. In the Server Address box enter slis.uiowa.edu and click next 7. Enter your mingo username and password, click next. 8. Click advanced. 9. In the left pane, click Advanced 10. Make sure the box labeled Use Passive mode for data transfers is CHECKED 11. Click OK, Click Finish 12. Any time you open the program, you should be able to click Connect in the upper left corner, and you should have a connection labeled Mingo, allowing you to connect to mingo in the future. 13. You will get a listing of files and directories on mingo on the right, your computer on the left. The first time you log in, you will see 8 directories. They are: Desktop Your desktop when you log into an imac in room Documents A private folder for you to store your documents on mingo. Library A system folder, you should have no reason to put anything in this. Movies A standard imac folder, used in some cases for imovie, you do not need to use this. Music Similar to Movies, a folder you shouldn t need to use. Pictures If you import photos, in room 3092, using iphoto, they will be stored here. Public A public folder that can be used to share files with other users on mingo. Anything in here is viewable by everyone, do not put any private information in here. Sites Your web folder. Anything you put inside this folder will be visible on the web from the URL You will learn more about these features in other classes, (Foundations, User Education: Multimedia, etc) 14. To transfer a file, in the right pane, navigate to the folder you want to put the file in by double-clicking on a folder name. Click the arrow pointing toward the right to transfer the file to mingo. 15. The file should transfer, congratulations, your file is now on mingo. 16. Click Disconnect in the toolbar at the top. 17. Exit the program (your login information will not be saved). Mounting Mingo on a Tech Lab Windows Machine
When using one of the Windows computers in the Tech Lab, you can connect to the departmental server (mingo) as if it were a directory on your computer. Note: This is not possible on any machines other than the Windows boxes in the tech lab, this procedure will not work on any ITS machines, your home computer, etc. To access mingo from those (and other) locations, refer to the FTP help sheet. 1. On the desktop, double click the My Computer icon. 2. Select the Tools menu, and click Map Network Drive 3. Leave the Drive: box as it is. In the Folder box, type: \\mingo.slis.uiowa.edu\users\username (replacing username with your mingo username) IMPORTANT NOTE: Those are not forward slashes, they are backslashes. The backslash key is located directly above the Enter key. 4. Click Finish 5. It will prompt you for your mingo username and password, enter it and hit OK. 6. You will now have access to all of your files on mingo via the Z: drive. You may use this just as you would any other drive in your computer, saving files to it, etc. 7. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, Double click the my computer icon, find the Z: drive near the bottom, right click on it, and select Disconnect. If you do not, whoever sits down at that computer next will have access to your files.
