1 OnlineAppllfuture This is a sample application for review purposes only. Once you have reviewed the sample application and are ready to answer the questions, please go online at to complete the official online application. Directions Sample Workshop Application Applications are now being accepted for Online and Onsite Workshops. Those not selected for a particular workshop will be notified. Applications will be kept for consideration of future workshops. There is no need to reapply. (Please note that for each Online Workshop, "meetings" take place over a 4- week period, averaging 6 hours per week, but only 1 hour being a fixed time.) Please take your time to read and answer all of the questions in this application. Any information left out may disqualify you from being considered for a workshop; this includes the two-page Institutional Endorsement Form at the end of the application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Applications for each will be accepted up until six weeks prior to the workshop. All applicants will be notified about the status of their application around that time. The application takes roughly 20 minutes to complete, however, there is no time limit and you should feel free to take as much time as you wish. Please be aware that there are four (4) essay questions that you should give some thought to before applying. Therefore, you should have already downloaded and reviewed a sample application. Helpful Hints: 1. Make sure you are happy with your answers on each page of the application before moving on to the next page. Hitting the back button on your browser may cause your answers to be submitted incorrectly. 2. When choosing Other as your answer, be sure to check the Other box in addition to filling out a description. 3. Toward the end of the application you will be able to download the required two-page Institutional Endorsement Form. However, feel free to skip the download and use the Institutional Endorsement Form included in the sample application. 6 Institutional Endorsement Form for First Name Last Name Dear Director, Supervisor or Administrator: Astronomy from the Ground Up is a National Science Foundation funded program from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in collaboration with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and the Association of Science-Technology Centers. All three nonprofit organizations are working together to provide informal science educators at small- to mediumsized nature centers, science centers/museums and natural history museums with new and innovative ways to communicate the excitement of modern astronomy to their visitors. We believe that administrative support leads to more successful partnerships between informal educators and the Astronomy from the Ground Up (AFGU) team. Completing a brief, online astronomy tutorial before attending the workshop (if selected). Taking part in approximately 30 hours of follow-up training through online and other applications. (Most of the follow-up training is self-paced and can be completed at the participant s convenience over a six-month period). Training and mentoring at least one additional staff or volunteer at our institution. ( Apprentices are expected to train 3 or 4 AFGU activities in order to become familiar with and practice the new activities.) Conducting an average of two astronomy-related visitor engagements per month, either as stand alones or enhancements to existing programming, for a minimum of one year after attending the AFGU workshop. (If the astronomy programs at your workplace are infrequent, perhaps there is a way to average 12 events per year. Contact AFGU staff at afgu@astrosociety.org for more information.) Participating in the online AFGU community, a support network of peers from all over the country that have participated in similar AFGU training. Submitting regular online activity reports and participating in evaluations of the program. Providing interest stories (and a few photos if permission is granted) of some astronomy education events/programming at our institution. For the onsite workshop, I understand that, if selected, this applicant s workshop materials, airfare, hotel and most meal expenses for this free workshop will be covered by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Meals covered are breakfast, lunch and one dinner; but otherwise, participants are responsible for covering all other meals on their own.
