POS Point of Sale Terminal RTSP Real Time Streaming Protocol Table 1 Abbreviations used in this manual 2.Objective Figure 1: Simple Network Setup The objective of this document is to enable an installer to configure the NVR (Network Video Recorder) and the VR100IP so that the NVR can stream video from the. These devices are circled in red in the network diagram in Figure 1. Configuration of the VR100IP and an IP Camera will be covered in another document. Please refer to Table 2 for a list of tested Compatible NVRs. If your NVR is similar then it may also work, please check the configuration of the NVR, if the options are similar to this document, then most likely it will work with these instructions. 5 4.Before You Begin 4.1.Setup Equipment The installer will need a computer on the IP video network with a browser. Use the browser to access the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the camera the NVR and the VR100IP. 4.2.Start with Camera and NVR Working Together Before you try to install the VR100IP into the video system, the NVR should already be configured on the network so that it can receive the IP video stream from the cameras that are to be used in the system. This may require the installer to setup the networking equipment for their local network, including routers and switches with cabling need to make all of the components communicate properly. Once this is done, the VR100IP should be configured on the network so that the Web GUI interface is available in the installeer's browser. Once all of the hardware is connected and configured on the local network, then the installer is ready to start configuration. IMPORTANT: We recommended that you configure the NVR and IP Camera first. Then the IP Camera to VR100IP Text Inserter next. Finally configure the NVR as the final step in the video processing chain. 5.Configure VR100IP and NVR Now we will configure both devices so that streaming can proceed from the VR100IP to the NVR. 5.1.Configure VR100IP Now we will configure the VR100IP settings. Log into the VR100IP webpage and select the Settings tab (see Figure 2 below). Use the same Username and Password in the NVR to access the video stream in the VR100IP. 5.2.Configure NVR The NVR can be configured in one of two ways. Either with an HDMI connection to a video monitor and using the mouse provided, or by configuration over the web GUI. For access to the Web GUI, some minimal setup will be needed to configure the network connection of the NVR. Once this is done then the Web GUI will be available. These instruction assume currently that you have configured the NVR on your network and are using the Web GUI. A future version of this document may include the alternate Native GUI steps Log into the NVR Configuration GUI. Figure 3: NVR Login Using your login and password, or the default login and password for the NVR, log in using the Internet Browser as shown in Figure 3. We have found the default user and password for these NVRs to be admin and admin. It is recommended to to change the default password once configured. Page 6 of 10

7 5.2.2.Check the Remote Device Settings First check the remote device settings for the camera that you plan to use for the. Confirm that the camera is working without the first. Once you have completed the quick check then you will be ready to configure the as another remote device. In this example the NVR GUI is set for viewing both the original IP camera video and the video. Figure 4: Remote, Add Device Setup From Figure 4 above channel 1 is configured as the raw IP Camera output using the Dahua protocol on port Channel 3 is the VR100IP output. Page 7 of 10

8 5.2.3.Add a Remote Device for the VR100IP Configure the NVR using the General Manufacturer setting. Once this is selected then use the URL of rtsp:// /vr100ip. Replace the IP address here with the actual IP address of the VR100IP on your network. The Username and Password will be identical to the IP camera Username and Password used to access the RTSP or video stream. Save the Settings. If the status shows a green check shortly as in Figure 4, then the connection is OK, otherwise troubleshooting may be necessary. Figure 5: VR100IP Device Setup Preview the Output Figure 6: NVR Preview Window If the is configured correctly, then you can preview the video output by going to the preview window. The green selection will be around one of the video window. Select the Camera Channel that you have configured to be the VR100IP. In the dropdown box select main stream. The video should start playback live in the selected video window. As can be seen in Figure 6 the video is shown and the alert character is visible in the lower right corner. The alert character looks like a play icon and will be present on the Text Insert output always as a visible indicator that the text Page 8 of 10

9 inserter is running. If data from the POS is flowing to the, you should also start to see transaction data as they are processed and sent from the POS terminal. 6.Test VR100IP Connection to NVR Now we will test the NVR and VR100IP connection settings. After configuring the VR100IP and the NVR settings, check the connection status by viewing the Camera Status page in the VR100IP webpage (select Status tab, then select the Camera icon on left). The page should be similar to Figure 7 below. If the NVR is connected and working properly then the number of Current Sessions should be at least 1 or greater. If it is not, then either the Camera Connection or the NVR connection is not configured correctly. See the RTSP Overlay Test Section below. Figure 7: VR100IP Camera Status Page 6.1.VR100IP Internal Test Signal Test In the VR100IP Camera Setting Page is a setting for RTSP Mode. This setting will allow the installer a way to generate an internal test signal within the VR100IP. Test patterns can be generated at 480p, 720p and 1080p resolutions as well as have a video passthru function without Text Insertion being present. To change this setting, select an alternate mode and restart the VR100IP to make sure the setting is active. NOTE: If no active connections are present, then the setting change immediately, but if any Current Sessions are in progress, then a reboot of the unit is required. 6.2.RTSP Overlay Test Refer back to the RTSP Overlay status in Figure 7 above. If the VR100IP is already connected to a NVR, then the State field should show Connected status, or Playing status, otherwise it will show Not Connected Using VLC to test RTSP Overlay Page 9 of 10

10 To test the video from the VR100IP, you can use a PC or laptop connected to the same network as the camera and VR100IP. Download and install the program VLC (this is a free download from This program can be used to check the RTSP connection. Launch VLC and select Media - Open Network Stream. In the text field labeled Please enter a network URL:, input the following RTSP address: rtsp://<username>:<password>@<ip>:<port>/vr100ip <username> = The username of the VR100IP User <password> = The password of the VR100IP User <IP> = The IP address of the VR100IP <port> = The RTSP port configured for both camera and VR100IP (default is 554) Figure 8: VLC Open Media example Example: for the VR100IP address in Figure 6, the URL to enter in VLC would be: rtsp://admin:admin@ :554/vr100ip [note: in this example, the <username> and <password> are admin ] Press Play and wait a few seconds for video playback to begin. If connected properly, you will see video from the VR100IP (ie, the camera s video with text overlay). If there is no video playback, recheck the RTSP settings in both the camera and VR100IP. If video playback in VLC is working, return to the VR100IP Web page Figure 9: Video in VLC, Inserted Text on work and refresh the Camera Status page.
