11 1 Introduction The VDP is a videophone development platform for video-phone applications that integrates full duplex audio and video phone functions and offers an embedded software framework, along with a demonstration and development platform. The VDP includes two VDP units and a 10/100Mbps fast Ethernet mini switch. Each VDP unit contains of a DM643 development board, a keyboard, an LCD screen, and a camera. The software is a modularized package of audio and video processing components. VoIP call control protocols and network protocols are integrated with TI s Reference Framework 5 (RF5) and run on a single processor, TMS320DM643. Video processing is designed to support industry-leading video technologies with an H.264 and H.263 based solution that is capable of full motion video up-to 30fps at CIF resolution. Voice processing supports narrow band coders, which are voice G.711 and G The user development APIs are designed to support customized designs of the user interface. The IP videophone commonly works on two modes: Non-GK mode: No gatekeeper (GK) is used GK mode: A gatekeeper (GK) is used The included demonstrations discussed below illustrate how the VDP works on the H.323 stack in both modes. It also shows how to set up a connection and create media channels between the terminals, how to use the H.263/H.264 algorithm to compress/decompress videos, how to use the G.711/G algorithm to compress/decompress voice and how to transmit a media stream using RTP/UDP/IP over the Ethernet. Demonstrations 1 and 2 illustrate how the VDP communicates with Microsoft Netmeeting (soft video phone) based on H.323 protocol, H.263 CIF format for video and G723.1 or G.711 for voice. Demonstration 3 and 4 illustrate how the VDP communicates with each others based on H.323 protocol, H.264 CIF format for video, and G723.1 or G.711 for voice. There are two connections to the camera and video display in each demo. The VDP board has its own camera and screen to capture and display video. The VDP also supports the connection of an external camera and a display unit (e.g., TV). 7

The caller sets up a connection to a callee (VDP or Netmeeting) using H.225, and then the caller and the callee exchange capabilities and define Master /slave, and open logic channels to transmit a media stream (both video and voice) using H.245. When the logic channels are open, the video and voice streams carried by RTP transmits to the other side. The following steps in section 3.5 produce video and voice stream: acquisition, capture, compression, and packets for the VDP. At the same time, the terminal receives 26
31 a streams sent by Netmeeting via RTP. Then through repacking and decompression, the video and voice analog is displayed. Since Netmeeting only supports video compression of H.263/H.261, and voice compression of G.711/ G.723.1, accordingly, this demonstration adheres to those guidelines. The video resolution is in CIF format (CIF: pixels in NTSC, pixels in PAL). In non-gk mode, the caller must dial the callee s IP address directly. 3.2 Requirement PC requirements Microsoft Windows (2000, XP) Code Composer Studio V2.21(or higher) Microsoft Netmeeting installed on your computer Graphical card Audio card Camera Microphone/speaker VDP Requirements TMDSVDP64X-2 VDP main board TMDSVDP64X-2 VDP camera/screen panel Handset 12V DC power adapter with power cord Ethernet switch with power adapter The cables: Video-In cable (camera/screen panel to main board) Video-Out cable (main board to camera/screen panel) 10/100 BASE-T category-5 Ethernet cable Auxiliary power cord (main board to camera/screen panel) 3.3 Installation and Connection Installation of the VDP Install VDP units as instructed in Section

Connect the switch s power adapter into an electrical power outlet. 4. Connect the plug end of 12V DC power adapter cord into an electrical power outlet. When the VDP units are properly connected and powered up, the four green activity LEDs on the main board should flash to indicate initialization. In a few seconds, the initialization results will be displayed on the screen. Then the video loop back will be on. 5. Press the Menu button to configure VDP as instructed in section 2.4.1Configure Netmeeting as instructed in section Call either from VDP or Netmeeting by dialing the callee s IP number. If using the VDP as a caller, press the Hook button and dial Netmeeting s IP number to call. From the Netmeeting panel, press the Hang Up button when you hear the ring. Then pick up the phone receiver, to be able to view and speak with each other. 7. Finish the call any time by pressing Hook at the VDP screen or by clicking Hang Down at Netmeeting panel. 4 Demonstration 2:VDP Talking with Netmeeting ( GK Mode) 4.1 Overview This demonstration performs visible talking between VDP and Netmeeting via Gatekeeper (GK) over the Ethernet. First, the VDP and Netmeeting are both registered on GK. To begin, the caller sets up a connection to a callee (VDP or Netmeeting) using H.225. Then they both exchange capabilities, define Master /slave and open logic channels to transmit media stream (both video and voice) using H.245. When the logic channels are open, video and voice streams carried by RTP will be transmitted to the other end. At the VDP terminal, the following steps in section 4.5 produce video and voice stream: acquisition, capture, compression and packet. At the same time, the terminal receives 29
34 the stream sent by Netmeeting via RTP, then through repacking and decompression, the video and voice analog is displayed Since Netmeeting only supports video compression of H. 263/H.261, voice compression of G.711/ G.723.1, this demonstration will adhere to those guidelines. The video resolution is CIF format (CIF: pixels in NTSC, pixels in PAL) In GK enable mode, the caller must dial the callee s phone number. 30

The caller starts by setting up a connection to a callee using H.225. They will then exchange capabilities, and define master /slave and open logic channels to transmit media stream (both video and voice) using H.245. When the logic channels are open, video and voice stream carried by RTP will transmit to the other end. At both VDP terminals, the following steps in section 5.5 produce a video and voice stream: acquisition, capture, compression and packet. Simultaneously the terminal sends and receives a stream via RTP. Then, through repacking and decompression, the video and voice analog is displayed VDP supports video compression of H. 263/H.264, voice compression of G.711/ G723.1, therefore this demonstration performs adheres to those guidelines. The video resolution is CIF format (CIF: pixels in NTSC,
38 pixels in PAL). In non-gk mode, the caller calling the callee only needs to dial the callee s IP address directly. 5.2 Requirements TMDSVDP64X-2 VDP main board TMDSVDP64X-2 VDP camera/screen panel Handset 12V DC power adapter with power cord Ethernet switch with power adapter The cables: Video-In cable (camera/screen panel to main board) Video-Out cable (main board to camera/screen panel) 10/100 BASE-T category-5 Ethernet cable Auxiliary power cord (main board to camera/screen panel) 5.3 Installation and Connection Installation of VDP Install VDP units as instructed in Section Connection Connect VDP units with each other via the Ethernet switch as shown in Figure 6. 34
