1 Customer User Addendum for Text & Graphics Xerox EX Print Server Powered by Fiery for the Xerox igen 150 Press, version 1.0 This document describes the (High Definition) Text & Graphics feature of the Xerox EX Print Server Powered by Fiery for the Xerox igen 150 Press. NOTE: This document uses the term digital press to refer to the Xerox igen 150 Press. This document uses the term EX Print Server to refer to the Xerox EX Print Server Powered by Fiery for the Xerox igen 150 Press. Some elements used in illustrations are excerpted from the SpencerLab Printer Test Suite (v.4.4) Color Spectrum file, used by Electronics For Imaging under Limited License, June Text & Graphics The Text & Graphics feature offers the ability to process the elements of a job at 1200 dpi, to preserve detail and reduce the jaggedness associated with halftoned, nonsaturated objects. The areas of a job that contain a high level of detail are passed at high resolution from the EX Print Server to the digital press. effectively increasing the native resolution of the digital press. Text & Graphics functions equally well on both black-only and color elements of a job. Examples of both are included in this document. You can select the setting for Text & Graphics for a job in the Image Quality tab of the printer driver or in Job Properties Electronics For Imaging 31 July * *

2 Page 2 Non-saturated text and graphics For non-saturated text and graphics, Text & Graphics provides different levels of enhancements (Low, Medium, or High). The Low setting does not enhance graphics and applies some enhancement to text. The Low setting is for jobs in which the text needs to be enhanced but graphics do not. The Medium setting applies some enhancement to graphics and the highest level of enhancement to text, to reduce the jaggedness of edges typically associated with halftones. The High setting applies the highest level of enhancement to both graphics and text. The High setting is suited to jobs that demand edge definition for non-saturated lines, such as architectural drawings. For most jobs, the Medium setting is the most suitable as it gives clear, sharp text with moderate enhancement for line art. The High setting should be used when detailed line work is critical. The Low setting provides a softer look without sacrificing sharpness for fully saturated text and knockout text. Differences between the settings are most clearly illustrated with non-saturated text and graphics, where halftone patterns appear. For examples, see the following sections: Non-saturated graphics with different levels of Text & Graphics on page 3 Non-saturated text with different levels of Text & Graphics on page 4 Saturated text and graphics and Edge Enhancement For fully saturated or nearly saturated text and graphics, Text & Graphics provides the same enhancement to text and line quality regardless of setting (Low, Medium, or High). In addition to Text & Graphics, the EX Print Server offers Edge Enhancement, which also enhances the definition of text and lines. Edge Enhancement applies an internal Xerox igen 150 Press process. Edge Enhancement and Text & Graphics are mutually exclusive (enforced by a software constraint). To get the most from the EX Print Server and your digital press, it is important to understand the effects of each of these features and choose the appropriate option for your job. The effects are most clearly illustrated with saturated or nearly saturated text and graphics and with knockout text and graphics. 3 Page 3 Text & Graphics = Low Non-saturated graphics with different levels of Text & Graphics The example graphic is a line drawing with various line types. With Text & Graphics at the Low setting, the lines of the internal elements of the car are faint. Text & Graphics = Medium With Text & Graphics at the Medium setting, the lines of the internal elements of the car are more defined.

4 Page 4 With Text & Graphics at the High setting, the lines of the internal elements of the car are clearly defined. Text & Graphics = High Text & Graphics = Off (Edge Enhancement = Off) Non-saturated text with different levels of Text & Graphics The example shows text with several levels of saturation. Without Text & Graphics, the halftone dots interfere with the edges of the letters.

6 Page 6 Fully or nearly saturated text and graphics The example graphic is a solid black graphic containing thin lines. A similar effect could be seen for any solid color. With neither Edge Enhancement nor Text & Graphics, the area of the graphic where the lines converge exhibits undesirable patterning. With Edge Enhancement, the patterning is slightly reduced. With Text & Graphics at any setting, the patterning is significantly reduced. 7 Page 7 Knockout text and graphics in fully or nearly saturated background The example is knockout text on a solid black background. A similar effect could be seen for any solid color. With neither Edge Enhancement nor Text & Graphics, the edges of the text are blurred and the fine details in the lettering are lost to the extent that smallest text is illegible. With Edge Enhancement, edges are sharper and preservation of detail is increased. With Text & Graphics at any setting, the most edge sharpness and detail preservation is achieved.
