Make sure that the position of the DIP switches corresponds to the required settings. 24 V DC 11

Commissioning Connecting a PCV read head with the SSI interface Service USB 110 V / 240 V 24 V DC Figure 6.2 The read head has a USB interface for the internal parameterization of the read head functions with the "" software. The connection to the PC and the power supply of the read head is created with the parameterization cable (see accessories). The electrical supply of the read head is also provided via the parameterization cable during parameterization. The connection of the read head is made at the "Service" connector. 6.2 Starting the program and establishing communication Start the "" software. The software starts with an input window for the communication settings. Figure

Commissioning Basic settings for communication In the "PORT SETTINGS" windows, make the basic settings required for communication with the read head. 1. Interface: Select the command interface for the connected read head. 2. COM port: Select the communications port (COM port) used for your PC system. 3. Baud rate: Select the transfer rate for the connected read head. 4. Head address: Select the correct read head address. If you are unsure which command interface your read head has, refer to the relevant data sheet at If you are unsure which communications port to use, you can determine the correct setting as follows: COM port 1. Disconnect the read head from the power supply. Then disconnect the USB connection on the PC. 2. Click the "Refresh" button. Figure Open the "COM port:" drop-down list. A list of the COM ports currently in use will appear. In the example shown, these are ports COM1 and COM3. 4. Important: observe the sequence! Reconnect the read head to the PC and then switch on the supply voltage of the read head. 5. Wait until the read head has started operating. 6. Click the "Refresh" button again. 13

Commissioning Figure Open the "COM port:" drop-down list. An updated list of the current COM ports will appear. In the example shown, these are ports COM1, COM3, and COM6. The newly listed port COM6 is therefore the COM port to be configured. 8. Select this port from the "COM port" drop-down list. 9. Select the baud rate of the read head from the "Baud rate" drop-down list. Figure After all communications settings have been made, click on the "Connect sensor" button. 14

Commissioning Figure 6.7 The software now establishes a connection to the read head. Once the connection has been established successfully, a message will appear accordingly. Figure Adjusting the SSI telegram If you are using a read head with an SSI interface, then you have the option of adjusting the SSI telegram to meet your requirements. Adjusting the SSI response telegram 1. Select "SSI Protocol Config" in the program navigation to adjust the SSI telegram. In the window, a representation of the 25-bit SSI telegram appears with the bits assigned. The bits 1 (MSB) to 22 (LSB) are initially preassigned with the data from the X position of the read head. Bits 23 to 25 are configured as "No Position", "Warning", and "Error" status bits. 15

Commissioning Figure To change the bit assignment, click on the content under the bit number to be changed (in the example, bit 25, error). The list of possible selections that you can assign to this bit opens to the right. Click to make your selection. 3. In this way, you can configure the response telegram of your read head with the SSI interface. Note! The number of position bits required in the X-direction depends on the track length of your system and the required position resolution. Example: max. track length = 300 m, required position resolution = 1 mm. 19 bits is sufficient to represent the 300,000 possible X-position values. You can therefore assign 6 bits to display additional data. 6.3 Parameterizing the read head Within ten minutes of switching it on, start parameterizing the read head via the command interface. A time lock disables the read head when this time has elapsed. The time lock remains open for as long as you are parameterizing the read head. 16

Commissioning The time lock disables the read head only if no parameterization activities take place for more than ten minutes. If you transfer changed parameters to the read head after the time lock has disabled the read head, an error message will appear. Figure Parameter table Select "Parameter" in the program navigation To parameterize the read head To load or save parameter sets Figure 6.11 A list of all read head parameters and their current settings appears. 17

Commissioning Figure 6.12 The background colors of the parameter fields provide information about the parameters. Turquoise fields indicate parameters that cannot be changed. Light green fields indicate parameters that can be changed. The value entered in the program interface matches the entry in the read head. Yellow fields indicate parameters that can be changed. The value in the program interface has been changed and does not match the entry in the read head Sensor parameters Note! Changes in the parameter table on the program interface have no direct impact on the behavior of the read head. The parameters are transferred to the read head only when you press the "Upload changed parameters" or "Upload all parameters" button. The read head then operates with these parameters. The parameters are saved in the read head in a volatile state and are lost when the read head is switched off. The parameters are saved permanently in the read head only if the "store parameter in EEPROM" button is pressed. The changed parameters are then available after the read head has been switched off and on again. 18
