3 Agenda Review the high-level capabilities added in release (March 2018) and 4.2 (September 2018) Overview of the event notification enhancements included in release Live demo illustrating how the event notification enhancements can be exploited to simply TS7700 operations

4 Summary of TS7700 Release and 4.2 Content Release was available March 2018 Enhanced compression options New compression options controlled through the Dataclas LZ4 and zstd 16 Gbps FICON adapters Reliability, Availability and Serviceably improvements Grid resiliency improvements This improvement intended to minimize the impact on a Grid environment when a single cluster is sick but not dead Event Notification Redesign and SYSLOG support Control Unit Initiated Reconfiguration (CUIR) is a software mechanism that automatically requests a supported zseries host to vary TS7700 distributed library devices offline and online automatically during normal Service Prep operations Release 4.2 was available in September 2018 for TS7760 Cloud Tiering

5 New TS7700 Event Notification Capabilities in R4.1.2 Introduces SYSLOG support Common method to surface messages to a SYSLOG server Used primarily for audit trail for both customer and IBM activities, but can be used for all events if desired Tunable Events Table of all supported events are made available through the MI Administrator can pick and choose which events go where Host messages MI events SYSLOG events SNMP events Administrator can override severities Administrator can backup configuration and restore it to other grids Intended to improved event descriptions and problem determination 1 5

6 Selecting Notification Settings Through the MI In the MI (web interface) go to: Settings > Notification settings 6

7 Notification Settings Management Interface Panel In the MI (web interface) go to: Settings > Notification settings 3 types of messages are being addressed: 1 ) Events 2 ) Host messages 3 ) MDEs calling home (Mcode Detected Error) IBM provides a default severity, but customer could change it using a Custom Severity A message can be enabled or disabled, if disabled it wont be logged anywhere. Each message can go to different notification channels: host, MI, SNMP, RSyslog. New Comments field was added, its an open 43 characters to be append to the messages. 7

8 Notification Settings Panel Actions Notification state and be enabled or disabled from the panel view: Modify Notification Settings The notifications state (enable or disabled) can be changed as a severity group: Modify Notification State by Severity Host Notification state can be changed by cluster, this applies to any external target: Modify Host Notification State by Cluster 8

9 Modify Notification Settings Modify notification settings option Select record and right click on it or Select the record and use actions Severity can be change to: Default Informational Warning Impact Serious/error Critical Can enable or disable the message Can Select all or some destinations Can append additional comments to it 9

12 Example of Messages With New Settings Host Messages These are messages that shows up in the host (zos) console They show up with an ID YYxxxx, under a CBR3750I xxxx: Number from 0000 to 9999 YY: Any Letters Example: AL0001, G0036, E0023. Was Enhanced to show Severity and if specified, customer comments (Host zos code level update may be required) This type of message does not show up in the MI interface 12

13 Backup and Restore The notification settings changed by an Administrator can be backed up to a file. The file can be restored to same or other GRID through a single cluster. Minimizing the effort required for propagate identical changes to other clusters To backup, in the MI go to: Settings, Cluster Settings, and use Backup settings then select Notification Settings To restore, in the MI go to: Settings, Cluster Settings, and use Restore Settings. 13

14 RSyslog New web interface panel to configure it Up to two targets can be configured Logs types sent to RSYSLOG include: user-level messages, security/authorization messages, MI events, host messages, call home messages Can be enabled or disabled Can Add, Remove or Modify targets Each target can be active or inactive 14

16 SNMP SNMP was enhanced to trigger traps for calling home and host notification messages SNMP trap for Events are enhanced to include description 16
