1 Hardware Announcement August 29, 2006 IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 enhances System z virtual tape processing Overview The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700, the newest member of the IBM TS7000 Virtualization Family, is designed to provide tape virtualization capabilities for the IBM System z environment. As the successor to the highly successful IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS), the TS7700 Virtualization Engine is designed to provide improved performance and capacity to help lower the total cost of ownership for tape processing. It introduces a new modular, scalable, high-performing architecture for mainframe tape virtualization. The TS7700 integrates the advanced performance, capacity, and data integrity design of the 3592 Tape Drives, with high-performance disk and a new advanced IBM System p server, to form a storage hierarchy managed by robust storage management firmware with extensive self management capability. It includes functions such as advanced policy management to control physical volume pooling, cache management, dual copy, dual copy across a grid network, and copy mode control. The TS7700 offers a new standards-based management interface and enhanced statistical reporting, compared to the VTS. The TS7700 Virtualization Engine integrates the following components into the virtual tape solution: One IBM Virtualization Engine TS7740 Server (3957 Model V06) One IBM Virtualization Engine TS7740 Model CC6 (3956 Model CC6) Cache Controller Three IBM Virtualization Engine TS7740 Model CX6 (3956 Model CX6) Cache Drawer The TS7740 Server provides host connection of up to four FICON channels, and connections to the tape library and tape drives for backend tape processing. A TS7700 with Grid Communication features can be interconnected with another TS7700 to provide peer-to-peer copy capability between Virtualization Engines for tape using IP network connections. The TS7740 Cache, comprised of the TS7740 Model CC6 and the TS7740 Model CX6, provides over 6 TB of tape volume cache capacity before compression. Each TS7700 supports up to a maximum of E virtual tape drives and up to 500,000 logical volumes, each with a maximum capacity of 1.2 GB (assuming 3:1 compression) to 12 GB (assuming 3:1 compression and using the 400 to 4000 MB volume sizes). Key prerequisites The TS7700 Virtualization Engine can attach to FICON channels on selected System z servers with the appropriate levels of system software. From four to sixteen 3592 tape drives in a TS3500 Tape Library must be attached to the TS7700 Virtualization Engine via the 3953 Library Manager. Additional features may be required on the TS7700 Virtualization Engine components or automation frames. Refer to the Technical information section for details. Planned availability date September 29, 2006 At a glance The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 offers tape virtualization for IBM System z servers connecting over FICON channels. 2 Description Secure Data Erase TS3000 System Console No Yes The TS7700 Virtualization Engine is designed to: Bring efficiency to tape operations Reduce batch windows Reduce the cost of tape operations Support disaster recovery The TS7700 creates a storage hierarchy, managed by robust storage management firmware, with advanced capability through the integration of: One TS7740 Server (3957 Model V06), a System p RISC-based server 6 TB of high-performance TS7740 Cache from: One TS7740 Cache Controller (3956 Model CC6) Three TS7740 Cache Drawers (3956 Model CX6) A connection to the TS3500 Tape Library A connection to the high-capacity, high-performance 3592 tape drives. The TS7700 appears to the System z host as up to of 128 virtual 3490E tape drives and 500,000 automated tape volumes each with a maximum capacity of 1.2 GB (assuming 3 to 1 compression) to 12 GB (assuming 3:1 compression and using the 4,000 MB volume size and the larger logical volume size support). All tape volumes are initially stored in a tape volume cache contained in disk storage for fast access, then written to tape. Tape volume cache contents are managed to keep recently accessed volumes in the cache to minimize mount delays. Cache management is provided to allow expedited deletion from the cache of volumes not expected to be read after creation. You get advanced policy management that lets a storage administrator control: Media selection Collocation of logical volumes Dual logical volume copy creation Expedited deletion from tape volume cache Logical volume size selection Grid communication copy mode With z/os DFSMS, you get Dynamic policy selection using storage group, storage class, data class, and management class policies. The Grid Communication feature lets you interconnect two TS7700s to form a Grid configuration. The Grid configuration provides a solution for disaster recovery. The Grid-connected TS7700s communicate over the IP network. This allows flexible placement of each TS7700 to facilitate 24 x 7 processing requirements and a solution for remote backup and recovery. TS7700 Virtualization Engine summary Maximum number of Logical Volumes 500,000 Maximum Logical Volume Size 4,000 MB Number of FICON Channels 2 or 4 Maximum Logical Channel Paths 512 Cache Capacity (3:1 Compression) 18 TB Drive types 3592-J1A, E05 Number of 3592s 4 to 16 Number of Virtual Tape Drives 128 Export/Import No Cache management Yes Volume Pooling Yes Dual Copy Yes Selectable Logical Volume Size Yes Copy Mode Control Yes Grid Communication Copy Yes Data Compression Yes Product positioning The TS7700 Virtualization Engine tape solution is well suited for: Disaster backup Data consolidation Data protection Data sharing The TS7700 is designed to provide the following benefits: Low operating costs in areas such as: Power Maintenance Operations and support staff Small batch window Small amount of floor space consumed by tape operations High operational quality High level of tape automation Excellent tape data availability Fast access to data Cross server data sharing Remote dual copy for use with: Disaster backup and recovery Remote tape vault The TS7700 incorporates extensive self-management capabilities consistent with IBM on demand initiatives. These capabilities are designed to help reduce the cost of a TS7700 solution and avoid the potential impact of human errors. A TS7700 can help improve the efficiency of mainframe tape operations by efficiently using disk storage, tape capacity, and tape speed, and by providing a large number of tape addresses. These benefits help make the TS7700 a suitable repository for local and remote backups, and archival data. The TS7700 can also help support your business intelligence initiatives by allowing shared volume access between mainframe platforms. The enhanced performance and capacity features, provided with the TS7700, compared to the VTS, lets you place datasets in the TS7700, which can help eliminate direct use of conventional tape devices. The TS7700 supports the Grid Communication feature for remote dual copy that you can use for disaster backup and recovery. With the Grid Communication feature, the TS7700 operates in a grid configuration by interconnecting two TS7700s and automatically maintaining volume copies in both TS7700s. This option can help improve your sequential file data availability and recoverability. The redundant components of the TS7700 grid configuration can be separated, thus making it an excellent option for remote backup and recovery. If you have, or plan to have, a GDPS operation, a TS7700 cluster is compatible with GDPS and is well suited for the tape workload because of its remote dual copy capability. Alternatively, the entire TS7700 cluster can be used in a local environment to help improve data availability and recoverability. The TS7700 Grid Communication feature is the follow-on to the VTS Peer-to-Peer Copy feature. The TS7700 uses disk storage, and the unique performance and capacity of 3592 Tape Drives, to help reduce the total cost of ownership of tape solutions for System z environments
3 Statement of general direction It is IBM s current intent to enhance the IBM System Storage TS7700 Virtualization Engine by supporting the installation of a second TS7740 Server (machine type 3957, Model V06) within the 3952 Model F05 Tape Frame. This enhancement will support even higher levels of availability than is currently available with single server configurations.
