The new 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive is designed for automation and will be supported with the 3590 Model A60 Controller in the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library 3494 and StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS) solutions. If you require a stand-alone drive outside of a library, the 3592 Model J1A will also be available for installation in a stand-alone rack with the 3590 Model A60. The new 3592 Model J1A has a new high-technology design that increases the native data rate to up to 40 MB/sec versus the 14 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 E or H Model Tape Drives or the 9 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 B Model Tape Drive. With the use of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592, the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive provides a native cartridge capacity of 300 GB, five times more than the maximum capacity of the 3590 H Model Tape Drive. The form factor of the 3592 cartridge allows it to be used in 3494 or StorageTek Silo solutions. The smaller size of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive enables more drives to be installed in a rack or frame than with the 3590 Tape Drive. With adjacent frame support in the 3494, up to twelve drives can be attached to a single Model A60 Controller. The 3590 Model A60 attaches to ESCON and FICON channels of select S/390 and zseries servers. The 3592 Model J1A attached to a 3590 Model A60 is designed to allow an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to 60 GB. Supported environments include OS/390 and z/os with DFSMShsm and DFSMSdfp OAM. The effect of capacity scaling to 60 GB capacity is to reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to less than 30% of the normal locate time. Key prerequisites The 3590 Model A60 Controller can attach the new Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A for connection to ESCON and FICON channels on selected S/390 and zseries servers with the appropriate levels of system software. An IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch 2109 Model F16 or S16 is required to attach the 3592 Tape Drives to the 3590 Model A60. Additional features may be required on the Model A60 or automation frames. 2 Description The Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 will now attach the Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A which is designed to provide new levels of performance, cartridge capacity, and attachment capability for S/390 and zseries customers. The new Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A with the 3590 Model A60 can attach to ESCON and FICON channels on selected S/390 and zseries servers. The 3592 Model J1A with the 3590 Model A60 is supported in a 3494 Tape Library or StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn tape library. For customers that require a stand-alone drive outside of a library, the 3592 Model J1A will also be available for installation in a stand-alone rack with the 3590 Model A60. The 3590 Model A60 can be installed in the following frames for 3592 Model J1A attachment: 3494 Model D24: The 3590 Model A60 can be installed in a 3494 Model D24 frame with up to eight 3592 Model J1A drives. In an adjacent frame configuration, the 3590 Model A60 can be attached to up to twelve drives by attaching to additional drives in an adjacent 3494 Model D22 or L22 Frame Model C10: Up to two 3590 Model A60s can be installed in a single Model C10 Frame. A single 3590 Model A60 can attach to up to twelve 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives in a 3592 Model C20 frame for use with a StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn tape library. Stand-alone rack: A 3590 Model A60 can be installed in a stand-alone rack with 3592 Model J1A tape drives as follows: Up to twelve Model J1A drives with an Model A60 in a 2 m rack Up to eight Model J1A drives with an Model A60 in a 1.8 m or 1.6 m rack This attachment of 3592 Tape Drives to a 3590 Model A60 requires an IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch, which must be separately ordered and is installed in the rack or frame containing the Model A60 Controller. A 2109 Model F16 or S16 Switch can be used, although the Model S16 Switch is no longer marketed by IBM as of September 13, The 2109 Model F16 Switch is required to support a 2-Gbps link speed to the Model A60 Controller. The F16 or S16 switch must have the appropriate number of Gigabit Interface Convertors (GBIC) features as follows: 2109 Model F16: The 2109 Model F16 includes eight shortwave GBICs, enough to connect to the two 3590 Model A60 Fibre Channel Attachments and up to six 3592 Tape Drives. Feature number 2210 (Additional Shortwave Transceiver), which provides one additional GBIC, should be ordered for each drive (beyond six) that will be attached to the 3590 Model A Model S16: The 2109 Model S16 includes four shortwave GBICs, enough to connect to the two 3590 Model A60 Fibre Channel Attachments and up to two 3592 Tape Drives. Feature number 2010 (Shortwave GBIC) which provides one additional GBIC, must be included for each 3592 Tape Drive (beyond two) that will be attached to the 3590 Model A Tape Drive The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 is a follow-on to the highly successful Enterprise Tape Drive It is designed for high-performance tape applications, including: High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape. Large-scale automated tape environments where performance and reliability are required. These are primarily half-inch tape drive environments. Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. Examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications. The 3592 Model J1A is the first model of a new family of tape products that are designed to meet the growing needs of both new and existing IBM tape customers across a wide number of environments. Advantages of the new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A include: Higher performance, which can help reduce the number of tape drives required Larger capacity, to help you reduce the number of cartridges required and floor space needed Smaller form factor, which can help reduce the automation foot print Dual-ported native switched fabric interface, designed to enhance attachment flexibility High reliability, to help you improve operations Performance The new 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive employs a new design that increases the native data rate to 40 MB/sec versus the 14 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 E or H Model or the 9 MB/sec data rate of the 3590 B Model. The 3592 Tape Drive is designed for improved access characteristics such as load/ready time, search velocity, and rewind versus the 3590 Tape Drive. The 3592 Tape Drive has other enhancements designed to help aid small file and Hierarchical Storage Manager performance. In order to exploit the improved performance of the 3592 Tape Drive, there must be a 2-Gbps Fibre Channel infrastructure. This includes 2-Gbps FICON adapters on the Model A60 and drive attachment via the 2109 Model F16 switch, as well as 2-Gbps capability on the zseries server or Fibre Channel Director. Note: The actual throughput you may achieve is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, SAN, and the system or application software being used. Although the drive is capable of a 40 MB/sec native data rate, other components may limit the actual effective data rate. Media and Cartridge Capacity The 3592 Model J1A will use a new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 with an advanced metal particle tape specifically optimized for the Enterprise Tape environment, providing a native cartridge capacity of 300 GB (up to 900 GB, with 3:1 compression). This is a significant improvement over the 10 GB to 60 GB native cartridge capacity available with the 3590 B, E, or H Models. This can be very beneficial in space savings and economy of data storage since it can help lower the cost of storage per megabyte. For applications that fill current data cartridges this can help reduce the number of tape cartridges required. The reduced number of cartridges may also help free up floor space for other requirements and reduce the number of automation slots used. The cartridge has a similar form factor as the 3590 and 3490,

3 allowing it to be used in 3494 and StorageTek ACS solutions. Capacity scaling The 3592 Model J1A attached to a 3590 Model A60 allows an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to 60 GB. The effect of capacity scaling to 60 GB capacity is to reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to less than 30% of the normal locate time. Customers using OS/390 V2 R10 and z/os can exploit the capacity scaling capability of the 3592 Model J1A. A new data class parameter will determine if a tape is to be scaled to 60 GB. OPEN processing will scale a tape when the associated data class requests it and the tape is being written from load point (DISP=NEW, file sequence 1). On a subsequent reading of a performance scaled MEDIA5 tape, the data will be entirely contained in the first 60 GB of the tape, yielding very fast locate and read times. DFSMShsm and DFSMSdfp OAM can exploit this new feature, as well as other applications that use standard Open/Close/EOV processing. Refer to the publication DFSMS Software Support for IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 (SC ) for more information about software support for the 3592 Model J1A. For more information on using capacity scaling, refer to the capacity scaling considerations section of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 Introduction and Planning Guide, GA Dual Path Attachment The 3590 Model A60 Controller in an Enterprise Tape Library 3494 can be connected to the Attachment Concentrator. This provides an internal communications path between the library manager and the 3590 Model A60, or 3494 VTS Models B18, B10, or B20, which is a single Ethernet interface. The Dual Path Concentrator feature on the 3494 Model Lxx Frame provides an additional Ethernet concentrator switch for redundancy, if you require maximum availability and minimum down time. The 3590 Model A60 can be connected to this completely separate and redundant communications path to the 3494 library manager by ordering the Dual Path Attachment feature on the Model A60. This redundancy allows failure of any component without causing a subsystem degradation or outage, and in many cases the repair can be accomplished without a system outage. In addition, enhanced error management and reporting are benefits of these features. Product positioning IBM provides the 3590 family of products in a range of product offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements. The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 with the new Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A provides new levels of performance, cartridge capacity, and attachment capability for S/390 and zseries customers. The 3592 Model J1A has significant performance and capacity benefits over the IBM 3590 Tape Drives, as well as other 1/2 inch tape drives such as the IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E. The 3590 Model A60 has up to eight times the throughput of the 3590 Model A50 Controller and supports both ESCON and FICON host attachments in the following offerings: Enterprise Tape Library 3494 (in a 3494 Model D24 or D14) StorageTek Libraries (in a 3590 Model C10) Stand-alone (in a standard 19-inch rack or 3590 Model A14) 3592 attached to a 3590 Model A60 Controller The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 attached to the Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 provides attachment of IBM s highest performance, large capacity tape subsystem, to ESCON or FICON channels. It should be the tape drive of choice in any ESCON or FICON environment on zseries and S/390 systems where a reliable, affordable fast tape data rate or high capacity is needed. The 3592 offers significant enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity, reliability, and availability over IBM 3590, 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives. The 3592 may also relieve backup time and space constraints and provide the increased capacity needed to support today s growing disk backup requirements. Note: Although the 3590 Model A60 with 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives provides the capability of very high tape performance, the actual throughput achieved is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, SAN, and the system or application software used Tape Library The 3590 Model A60 can be installed in a 3494 Model D24 for attachment of 3592 Tape Drives to ESCON and FICON channels on zseries and S/390 systems. With adjacent Frame attachment, up to Tape Drives can be attached to the 3590 Model A60. The 3590 Model A60 can alternatively be installed in a 3494 Model D14 for attachment of 3590 Tape Drives to ESCON and FICON channels on zseries and S/390 systems. With adjacent Frame attachment, up to ten 3590 Tape Drives can be attached to the 3590 Model A60. IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server managed 3590s, 3590 Tape Drives, 3592 Tape Drives, 3490E Tape Drives, and 3590 Controller (3590 Model A00, 3590 Model A50, or 3590 Model A60) attached tape drives, can all be intermixed within an Enterprise Tape Library Silo Compatible Tape Subsystem One or two 3590 Model A60 Controllers can be installed in a 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment of 3592 or 3590 Tape Drives to a StorageTek ACS. The 3590 Model C10 is specifically designed for ESCON and FICON attachment of 3590 and 3592 Tape Drives through the 3590 Model A60. This enables you to enjoy the performance, capacity, reliability, and attachment benefits of 3592 and 3590 Tape Drives and still protect your StorageTek automated library investment. The 3590 Model A60 has a 3490E emulation option that allows the tape drives to be presented to a host as though it were a 3490E device, thus eliminating the need for any major software upgrades to support the 3590 device. This is critical to the C10 Silo Compatible solution, as the Host Software Component (HSC) for the StorageTek ACS does not require any modifications to enable the 3590 solution when attached to the ACS. Configuration flexibility has been enhanced to allow up to Tape Drives in a 3592 Model C20 Frame to be attached to a single 3590 Model A60 Controller. Alternatively, from one to four 3590 Tape Drives in a Model C12 or C14 frame, and up to eight SCSI attached or up to twelve Fibre Channel attached 3590 Tape Drives can be attached to a single 3590 Model A60 Controller. This provides, by feature option, the ability to configure the number of tape drives required to leverage your StorageTek ACS investment. The 3590 Model A60 and 3592 or 3590 Tape Drives can be migrated to an IBM

4 automation solution consisting of IBM automation, 3592 and 3590 drive technology, IBM DFSMS, and where appropriate a Virtual Tape Server. Integration of 3592 and 3590 drive technology in StorageTek libraries allows you the immediate benefit gained from 3592 and 3590 technology, while planning a migration (at your own pace) to a total IBM solution. Stand-alone The 3590 Model A60 can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack such as the IBM 7014 Model T00 or T42 for attachment of up to or 3590 Tape Drives. The 3590 Model A60 can also be installed in a 3590 Model A14 Frame for attachment of up to eight SCSI attached, or up to twelve Fibre Channel attached, 3590 Tape Drives. Moving 3590 to different storage solutions The 3590 offers configuration flexibility and long range customer investment protection in its unique ability to be used, and re-used, in multiple storage solutions. The 3592 and 3590 products are storage assets that can be moved from storage solution to storage solution. Through feature numbers and model conversions, the 3590 Model A60 Controller and 3592 or 3590 Tape Drives can be transformed to fit into stand-alone subsystems (stand-alone racks or 3590 Model A14), StorageTek Silos, or IBM 3494 automated solutions (including the Virtual Tape Server). An initial investment can now grow with your ever changing business requirements.
