3 Summary information Repository: Title: University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections ID: Date: Physical description: Dates of creation, revision and deletion: (date of creation) 0.87 m of textual records; 88 slides Administrative history / Biographical sketch Note Oliver Botar was born in Toronto to Hungarian refugee parents and was raised in Northern Ontario. Botar specializes in early-20th century Central European Modernism, with a concentration on art in alternative media, and Biocentrism and Modernism in early- to mid-20th century art, particularly in the work of the Bauhausa László Moholy-Nagy. He spent two years studying and conducting research in various European countries, particularly Hungary and Germany. Botar has also studied in the field of Canadian Modernism. Botar has authored many art publications, has edited several special volumes of journals and has organized a number of exhibitions in Canada, the U.S. and Hungary. He has lectured extensively in Europe, North America and Japan. He is the author of Technical Detours: The Early Moholy-Nagy Reconsidered (2006; 2007 [Hungarian]), A Bauhausler in Canada: Andor Weininger in the 50s (2009), Biocentrism and Modernism (co-editor Isabel Wu#nsche, 2011), and "An Art at the Mercy of Light": Recent Work by Eli Bornstein (Winnipeg, 2013). Botar is a two-time recipient of the Canada-Hungary Exchange Fellowship and a recipient of a Standard Research Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He has been a Resident Scholar at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal and a Fellow at the Institut fu#r Literaturwissenschaft in Berlin. He is non-resident Curator of Hungarian Art for The Salgo Trust for Education in New York. He is currently a professor of Art History at the University of Manitoba.
