2 Joanne Troutner reports that references to digital literacy can be found throughout the Common Core standards and encourages teachers to use the vast array of digital images available on line as one way in which those skills can be acquired. Resources on the internet can help students learn to read digital images and that incorporating various media into lessons produces better learning experiences as students gather information not only from text. For instance, museums have long been a staple destination for classroom field trips for students of all ages. If a field trip was not possible, teachers have been relegated to slide shows and or overhead transparencies. But since the inception of the World Wide Web, museums have increasingly given anyone with internet access a glimpse into their treasures. Through these online images, more and more people have the chance to experience what use to be reserved for only museum goers. Museum portals are only one way in which students can benefit from the myriad of graphic resources available online. With more students having access to tablets and smartphones, images can be accessed easier than ever. But getting the right image for the right project might not be as easy as it seems. While Google images can yield some desired results, it is important for teachers and librarians to bring the best and most appropriate images to their students. When teachers encourage the use of museum websites, for instance, doubts of accuracy and copyright compliance can be alleviated. For students, this type of study and inquiry lead to the development of what experts call visual literacy. According to Milbourn, skills involved in visual literacy include: a) visual learning- which is the understanding of visual characteristics and conventions as well as how images interact with text and other types of information b) critical viewing -which involves evaluating the context, authorship, and audience of images c) visual communication - which involves thinking and effectively conveying meaning in visual terms I have created an annotated list of a variety of sources for teenagers. Some are well known staples, but I also included a few sites that are likely lesser known yet still will provide a wonderful experience for that group of students either looking for images to augment an assignment, to post to social media, or to serve as inspiration for their own creative endeavors. The marketing materials that I developed to accompany this list are a poster that would serve as my display and then a brochure card that a student could take with them with the various website information necessary to access the site. It strives to contain the full breadth of human expression, from the written word, to works of art and culture, to records of America s heritage, to the efforts and data of science. The DPLA aims to expand this crucial realm of openly available materials, and make those riches more easily discovered and more widely usable and used. For teens looking for the right image, the DPLA provides more that a search engine and allows students to search by map, timeline, format or topic.

5 Open Pics App for iphone and ipad from Say Goodnight Software Open pics is a great mobile app available for ipad and iphone. From the first image below, you can see that the user can look for images from a number of popular sites from the LOC to DPLA to LIFE magazine and Flicker Commons. The user simply puts in a term such as sailboats and an array of images pop up that can be chosen. Or on the Currently Popular Images page, the user can see what images have been recently searched for. This is a great one stop shop type of app that would be useful for a number of projects.

6 Wikimedia Commons When you need a image and don t want to worry about copyright infringement, Wikimedia Commons is a great place to go. You can find images from something as simple as an icon for a smart phone to a photo of modern day Tokyo. The search is simple and you have a choice of millions of images.

7 Cool Infographics Gallery at Pinterest Pinterest has so many great boards full of interesting images but this one is particularly useful if you are designing an infographic for a school project. You ll find very elaborately designed one but also so with just great use of simple graphics. Sure to help inspire you with any design project.

8 Designs Seeds Do you need color inspiration? This site allows you to search by theme such as Winter or The Sea or by color. Beautiful photos accompany each palette and can serve as inspiration for your own photography or art work. Pin the palette you like right to your own Pinterest Board

9 Morgue File You have a food and nutrition report due in your Health Class next week and you would like to add some visual elements. Your touting the benefits of almonds and whole grain bread. Add some focal interest to your report by visiting Morgue File where you can find stock photos free for you to use in educational pursuits. There are thousands of images to use and one sure to fit almost any project.
