1 NetBackup 7.6 for Oracle: Hands-On Lab Description This lab w ill provide you direct hands on experience w ith some of the NetBackup 7.6 for Oracle data protection features. This lab assumes some basic experience w ith NetBackup, and some general know ledge of backup and Oracle concepts. At the end of this lab, you should be able to Describe enhancements in Oracle backup policy View discovered Oracle Instances Register Oracle Instances for backups Perform backups w ithout creating RMAN templates Notes This is a self-paced lab. 3 Lab Layout: This demo is configured w ith 3 VMw are Workstation based OS images. They are described as follow s: NBMASTER - This is the NetBackup Master Server for this Lab Setup. ORAWIN - This system is an Oracle 11gR2 server and NetBackup Client. LINORA This system is an Oracle 11gR2 server and NetBackup Client. 4 Lab Exercise 1: Verifying registration of Oracle instance after automatic discovery 10 Minutes Additional information before w e perform this exercise: A dedicated node for 'Applications' has been added to the NetBackup 7.6 Admin Console. Oracle is listed under this node. Instances and Instance Groups nodes are listed below the Oracle node. NetBackup 7.6 periodically and automatically performs Discovery of Oracle Instances running on different Operating Systems in the current master server domain. Discovered instances are displayed under the Instances node. Up on Discovery of an Instance, application credentials are required before the instance can be backed up. The NetBackup administrator must register the instance by providing the required application credentials: OS, Oracle, and RMAN. Alternatively, if the administrator does not have access to the credentials, they can authorize the DBA to register the instance remotely using NetBackup CLI s. Instances having the same credentials can be grouped together under Instance Groups, w here credentials only need to be specified once. 4

5 NetBackup also provides a cool feature Automatic Registration of Instances upon Automatic Discovery. In this lab, due to time constraints, w e have created an Instance group Instances for Window s and pre-populated it w ith the automatically discovered instance WININST. Additionally, an instance named lininst running on Linux server is also discovered and registered under instances. Perform the follow ing steps to view registered Oracle instances. Perform this exercise on NBMaster server: 1. Login as Administrator w ith passw ord as symc4now 2. Launch NetBackup Admin Console 3. Navigate to Applications node and expand it 4. Now you should see the Oracle node, expand this node 5. Now you should see the follow ing nodes: a. Instances b. Instance Groups 6. Select the Instance node, it show s tw o instances - WININST and lininst as Registered and Active. Note that the Policy field is blank. 7. Expand Instance Groups, here you can see a group Instances for Window s created 8. Select Instances for Window s instance group, observe that the instance WININST is member of this group 5

6 Lab Exercise 2: Explore NetBackup 7.6 for Oracle backup policy 10 Minutes Additional information before w e perform this exercise: The Oracle backup policy has been enhanced in NetBackup 7.6. The Schedules tab now has an Archived Redo Log Backup schedule w ith a Frequency in Minutes! Note that the Default-Application-Bac kup schedule is not available any more. 6

7 Tw o new tabs have been introduced Instances and Oracle. The Instance tab has 3 choices: 1. Select Instances 7

8 2. Select Instance Groups 3. Select clients for use w ith scripts or templates As soon as this option is selected the Oracle tab in the policy vanishes. This option allow s you to use your ow n RMAN scripts or templates 8

9 The other new tab is Oracle. This tab allow s modification of one or more RMAN attributes more customization! Perform this lab on NBMaster: 1. Open NetBackup Admin Console 2. Locate and select Policies node 3. From Menu bar, select Actions New New Policy 4. A New Policy creation w indow pops-up, uncheck Use Policy Configuration Wizard ; supply Policy Name as Explore Oracle Backup Policy and click Ok to continue 5. In the Policy Type under Attributes tab, select Oracle 6. OBSERV E: This w ill remove Clients tab and w ill add tw o tabs Instances and Oracle 7. Select Instances tab, take a look at the choices available, go through each choice 8. Select Oracle tab and view available options 9. Exit NetBackup Admin Console NOTE: DO NOT SAVE THIS POLICY, WE ARE JUST EXPLORING IT! 9

10 Lab Exercise 3: Perform Backups w ith Oracle Policies 15 Minutes Perform this exercise on NBMaster: 1. Open NetBackup Admin Console 2. Create 1 st backup policy w ith Use Policy Configuration Wizard checked. 3. a. Select option Oracle and click Next b. Type Policy Name as Whole_Database, under Selection option Select Instances is checked, don t change snapshot backup settings and click Next to continue 10

11 c. In the Instance Selection w indow, click New, another w indow w ill pop-up, select both instances WININST and lininst, click Ok and then Next to continue d. Select Whole Database as Backup Selection, click Next to continue 11

12 e. Select Full Backup as Backup Type, click Next to continue f. Accept default values in Frequency and Retention, click Next to continue g. Continue w ith default values in Schedule Start Window, click on Next then Finish to create policy 12

Create 3 additional backup policies w ithout using Policy Configuration Wizard w ith follow ing attributes: Policy 2: Policy Name: Partial_database_Tablespaces ---Attributes Tab--- Policy Type: Oracle Policy Storage: STU_ADV_Orac le ---Schedule Tab--- Name: Partial_DB_TBLSP Type of Backup: Full_Backup SUNDAY Only, 02:00 to 03:00 ---Instances Tab--- WININST ---Backup Selection--- Partial Database Tablespaces USERS Tablespace Refer the diagram below to make appropriate selection 13

14 Policy 3: Policy Name: Partial_database_Datafiles ---Attributes Tab--- Policy Type: Oracle Policy Storage: STU_ADV_Orac le ---Schedule Tab--- Name: Partial_DB_Datafiles Type of Backup: Full_Backup SUNDAY Only, 02:00 to 03:00 ---Instances Tab--- WININST ---Backup Selection--- Partial Database Datafiles UNDOTBS1.DBF Refer the diagram below to make appropriate selection 14

15 Policy 4: Policy Name: Fast Recovery Area ---Attributes Tab--- Policy Type: Oracle Policy Storage: STU_ADV_Orac le ---Schedule Tab--- Name: FRA Type of Backup: Full_Backup SUNDAY Only, 02:00 to 03:00 ---Instances Tab--- WININST Refer the diagram below to make appropriate selection ---Backup Selection--- Fast Recovery Area - FRA 15

16 5. Change follow ing settings in the NetBackup Admin Console: Maximum Concurrent Jobs This is Storage Unit parameter. Go to Storage Storage Units Select STU_ADV_Orac le Change the default value of above parameter from default (1) to 32 Refer the diagram below to make appropriate selection Maximum jobs per client This is one of the parameters of Master server. Go to Host Properties Master Servers Select and Change nbmaster. Change the above parameter to 32 from default (1) value Refer the diagram below to make appropriate selection 16

17 Changing these settings w ill require NetBackup Services restart. Close the NetBackup Admin Console. On desktop, locate NB Service Stop icon.. Double-mouse click on this icon, this w ill open command-line w indow w ith cursor blinking; w ait for a couple of minutes, this w indow w ill close automatically up on all NetBackup services are stopped! Locate NB Service Start icon.. Double-mouse click on this icon, this w ill open command-line w indow w ith cursor blinking; w ait for a minute, this w indow w ill close automatically up on all NetBackup services are started! Note: Changing these settings will run backup streams concurrently resulting in reduced backup time for this exercise. 17

18 Now, open NetBackup Admin Console and perform backup! 6. Select Policy Whole_databse, click on Actions menu Select Manual Backup as show n in the diagram below Click OK tw ice 7. Sw itch to the Activity Monitor, it show s multiple streams being backed up one after another, and backup status is completed successfully. New column specific to Oracle backups introduced in Activity Monitor Instance or Database Parent Job Id column is now populated for Oracle backups You should see results similar in the diagram below. 18

19 8. Select and open the parent job, select Detailed Status, observe that the backup is performed using RMAN scripts 9. Sw itch to Instances under Applications Oracle node, refresh the screen; observe that the Policies column against both the instances is populated w ith value Whole_Database This finishes the hands-on labs! 19
