1 ECOM 2314 COMPUTER PROGRAMMING II Object Oriented Programming with JAVA Instructor: Ruba A. Salamh Islamic University of Gaza

2 Course Description The course is a continuation of ECOM 2314 (computer programming 1). The emphasis in ECOM 2324 is on solving more complex problems using object oriented programming in JAVA. Object oriented principles will be covered such as abstraction, composition, classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, and interfaces. We will study how these concepts can be implemented in the JAVA language. Along the way, we will have the occasion to visit many of the JAVA library classes that can be organized to solve a variety of problems. Additional topics include exception handling, and building GUIs with JAVAFX, and files input output streams will be introduced.

6 Grading Your grade will be determined as follows: Labs and Quizzes (20%) Projects and Assignment(15%) Midterm Exam (25%) Final Exam (40%) 6

7 Teaching & Learning Methods: Pay attention to the following issues to make the teaching and learning processes successful: Resources: textbook, references, class lectures, lecture notes, and other resources such as the web. Comprehension: attendance, class participation, and weekly preparation are your way to success. Responsibilities: keep an eye on what the class is covering, be alert for the announcements, watch your performance and see your instructor in the office hours if needed and don t delay things. Communication: sort out your problems and concerns with the instructor as soon as possible either in the class, in office, or by if necessary. Grading: there will be no grade curving or bonuses in both exams. The exams are designed in such a way to allow a student to achieve excellent grades if he/she studies sufficiently and thoroughly.

It disturbs everyone, and makes it hard to concentrate. If you have a question, just ask me! Please turn your cell-phones off! Don't hesitate asking any question about the lesson, I will clarify any thing you didn t understand 8

9 Attendance and Participation: Excellent attendance is expected. JUST policy requires the faculty member to assign a ZERO (40%) if a student misses 10% of the classes without an acceptable excuse accepted by the dean. Attendance will be taken by calling names or by passing around an attendance sheet. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out about any announcements or material you may have missed. Participation in the class will positively affect your performance.

13 Unstructured Programming Writing small and simple programs consisting only of one main program. Here '' main program'' stands for a sequence of commands or statements which modify data which is global throughout the whole program.

14 Drawbacks This programming technique can only be used in a very small program For example, if the same statement sequence is needed at different locations within the program, the sequence must be copied. If an error needed to be modified, every copy needs to be modified This has lead to the idea to extract these sequences(procedure), name them and offering a technique to call and return from these procedures

15 Procedural Programming With procedural programming, you are able to combine sequences of calling statements into one single place. A procedure call is used to invoke the procedure. After the sequence is processed, flow of control proceeds right after the position where the call was made.

16 Procedures (methods) With parameters and sub-procedures (procedures of procedures), programs can now be written more structured and error free For example, if a procedure is correct, every time it is used it produces correct results Consequently, in cases of errors you can narrow your search to those places which are not proven to be correct

17 Procedure Program view Now a program can be viewed as a sequence of procedure calls The main program is responsible to pass data to the individual calls, the data is processed by the procedures and the resulting data is presented Thus, the flow of data can be illustrated as a hierarchical graph, a tree.

19 Object-Orientation Thinking in OOP It is a kind of thinking methodology Everything in the world is an object (Pure OOP) Any system is composed of objects The evolution and development of a system is caused by the interactions among the objects inside or outside the system
