Three new Canadian award lists were added. New British lists were added. Also, a number of American lists for state specific awards have been added. Note See the Sirsi Client Care web page for a comple~elist of available Recommended Reading Lists ( Available Reserve Items on the Hit List Previously, when a user searched a title in ibistro or ilink, the display included the total number of copies at the libraries searched, the total number of those copies that are available for general circulation, and a list of all the searched libraries which have at least one available copy. In academic

2 Page 2 of6 libraries, there might also be copies available on reserve, but those copies were not included in the display.available reserve copy infonnation now appears in the title display. "Available" Locations for Holds in Demand Management The Location policy has been modified to include an option that allows sites to control if items at specific locations are checked for availability when a hold is placed with demand management. In Unicorn there are specific locations that are not considered available when holds are placed, such as Checked Out or In Transit. This option allows sites to treat items at other locations as checked out or transit items are treated when a hold is placed and items are checked for availability. For example, your library may have a special location that is not available to the public (such as a closed stacks location) but is a holdable location. If your system is configured not to allow holds on available items, holds would not be allowed on items at this location because the system would consider the items to be available even though technically they are not available to the public. With this new option, your library could set this special location not to be checked for available items and the hold would be allowed. Barcode Validation - WorkFlows Java Client Only Libraries now have the ability to validate patron and item barcodes entered in the WorkFlows client using the Barcode Validation functionality. Barcode validation will enable the library to control what barcodes are accepted within the system. Libraries will be able to select from a variety of supported barcode formats and the system will accept only barcodes that comply to the selected format(s) and are appropriate for the type of record. For example, with barcode validation the system will be able to make a distinction between item and patron barcodes and will not let the user enter a patron barcode for an item or vice versa. When barcode validation is configured fonnal validation will be done any time a barcode (patron or item) is typed by hand or via scanning throughout the WorkFlows client. BWI e-book Integration Library users can search for and download BWI's ebooks directly through ibistro or ilink, just as they search for and retrieve infonnation about on-shelf materials. Library users can search specifically for works available in ebook fonnat or they can search for ebooks and bound books at the same time. Once users discover a BWI ebook in the e-library, they can check them out, download them for reading, and rely on the Sirsi-BWI system to automatically check them back in once the loan period has ended and the ebooks file that they downloaded becomes unreadable. And because BWI ebooks are fully integrated into the library's current Sirsi system, policies set in Unicorn govern how BWI ebooks are circulated; how library user information is associated with BWI ebooks; and how circulation statistics and reports are generated for BWI ebooks, just as they are for more traditional circulating materials. Call Number, Item, and MARC Holding Maintenance Libraries Three new Library policy attributes will allow you to restrict maintenance access to the Unicorn call number, item, and MARC holding records. Currently, the Unicorn Library policy provides display and maintenance attributes for acquisitions, bill, circulation, serials and user records. These attributes allow system administrators to restrict the various display and maintenance activities for these record types to the appropriate staff. Three new attributes - Call Number Maintenance Libraries, Item Maintenance Libraries, and MARC

3 Page 3 of6 Holdings Maintenance Libraries - will allow Unicorn administrators to restrict add, edit and remove access to these record types. For example, a staff member may be allowed to add and edit an item record for Library A, but not be allowed to add or edit a call number record for Library A. Charge History -WorkFlows Java Client Only Sites now have the option to keep the charge history for patrons. The charge history is a history of patrons' checkouts that is available for display. The system may also be configured to check the charge history records when items are charged to the user and alert the operator if the user has previously charged out a copy of the title. The librarian can view the charge history for the user at checkout through a helper, when removing a user and in the Display User wizard. The ability to save charge records is configured through the policies. Charge history can be set up on a library by library basis or for specific groups of patrons based on their patron profile. The charge history records can be purged through a report or by removing a user. If charge history is not configured, the WorkFlows client for the Java platform will not reference or display any screens related to charge history. Circulation Notices in Batch Report A new report has been added that will allow sites to create one notice for holds, bills, and overdues that can be sent by .this report is very similar to the Circulation Mailer report except that this report allows you to send the notice by . The report also has some additional output options that are not available in the Circulation Mailer report. For example, you can select what prints on the notice - bills, holds or overdues. You can also configure headers for each notice type (bills, holds, overdues) and a footer. Collection Exchange - WorkFlows Java Client Only Collection Exchange is Sirsi's answer to library resource sharing. Collection Exchange improves the management of materials that rotate among libraries who share a library system. Collection Exchange helps refresh library collections by creating a steady flow of material among participating libraries. There is also a cost benefit to using Collection Exchange. Libraries supporting many branches can purchase fewer duplicate copies of new titles. Libraries can also work together to share and rotate materials, creating a steady flow of new items for library users. A library system that implements Collection Exchange can use many flexible options to tailor configuration and workflow to suit the needs of individual libraries. Libraries determine the types and quantities of materials they wish to acquire from other libraries as well as the kinds of items they wish to exchange. The Unicorn system can suggest which items to exchange and objectively determine where to send them. The formulas for objective distribution can be as simple or as complex as the libraries involved determine; population, existing collection, and other identifiers may be used. The Collection Exchange module can be easily customized to manage the flow of materials among libraries. Libraries can form groups in order to organize exchange. For example, libraries might form groups based on regional proximity or because the participating libraries have complementary collections. Rules can be established in order to determine how materials are exchanged among libraries within a group as well as between libraries in different groups. The Collection Exchange module is a full package that includes a WorkFlows toolbar, policy

4 Page 4 of6 configuration, and a full spectrum of reports. Display Patron Information When Discharging Items-WorkFlows Java Client Only A new behavior property has been added to the Discharge/Checkin wizard to allow sites to display the user information platform within the Discharge/Checkin wizard on the WorkFlows client for the Java platform. If this property is set, when items are discharged, information about the patron returning the item, such as the user profile and other demographic categories, will display at the top of the Discharge/Checkin wizard. Display Title Hold Wizard and Display Hold Count Helper -WorkFlows Java Client Only The Display Title Hold wizard and Detailed Hold Count helper have been added. This wizard and helper are available only to libraries that use Demand Management and the WorkFlows Client for the Java Platform. Display Title Hold Wizard A new wizard allows sites to display holds at the Title level. The Display Title Hold wizard will display a list of all Title level holds for the title and a count of all holds against the title within the system broken down by hold range (system, group and library). The wizard also displays the number of items associated with the title and the number of holdable items associated with the title. Detailed Hold Count Helper A new helper provides the library with specific hold counts for the title based on the type of count (My library, My group, or system), the hold level (Title, Copy or Volume), and the specified library. The helper is available from the Display Title Hold wizard. The helper provides the library with the ability to display a detailed count of holds against the title along with the actual hold list For example, a library could configure the helper to return a count of holds for patrons at My Library and My Group followed by the associated hold list. The helper also provides a count of items owned by the library and library's group along with a count ofholdable items owned by the library and library's group. This helper is intended to provide the library with information about holds for collection development purposes and to assist the library in determining where a patron's hold may fall in the hold queue. Edit User's Date Suspended -WorkFlows Java Client Only A new wizard now provides libraries with the ability to waive or forgive loan suspensions that have accrued based on policy settings or created manually using the Suspend User wizard. This wizard will allow the librarian to issue an unsuspend record that will offset an existing suspension record and reduce the overall next allowed loan date. An unsuspend record can be created for a number of days or using a specific date. For example, if a user's next allowed loan date is May 30, 2005, the librarian can opt to waive a portion of the suspension by issuing an unsuspend record for 10 days. This would reduce the next allowed loan date to May 20, Expired On-shelf Hold Report A new report processes items that have been on the hold shelf for too long. Libraries will be able to control how long an item remains on the hold shelf for pickup using the new Pickup By date added to the hold record. This date is calculated based on library policy settings when the hold becomes available.

5 Page 5 of6 If the user does not pick up the item by the Pickup By date, the Expire Available Holds report will change the status of the hold to Inactive/Available. The hold would then be selected by the Clean Holds Shelf report and included in the list of items to be pulled from the hold shelf. The item can then be reshelved or trapped to fill another hold. Full User Birth Date Field The birth year field has been expanded to include a user's entire birth date. The full birth date is being added to Unicorn to provide libraries with the ability to retain accurate and updated patron records that comply with today's privacy standards. The birth date field will be available for display in the Display User wizard and as a selection option in various user reports. Sirsi will also provide the ability for sites to convert their existing birth date information to the new field. In the Circulation wizards and various reports, the Birth Year field has been replaced by the Birth Date field. The Birth Date field specifies the user's full birth date including the month, day, and four-digit year. The Birth Date must be entered in the date format configured for Unicorn (such as MMlDDIYYYY or DD/MM/YYYY). Holds Expiration and Suspension Dates When library users place their own holds in the OPAC, they may now specify a date on which the hold expires. They may also enter a range of dates for which to suspend the hold, so that if the item becomes available during the suspension dates, the user will be skipped without losing his place in the hold queue. If the user doesn't specify an expiration date for the hold, the default expiration date as calculated by the library's policies will be used. List OnshelfItems with Holds Report Selects Multiple Copies to Satisfy a Hold The List Onshelf Items with Holds report has been modified to allow librarie,sto select multiple items when selecting items to fill an individual hold. A selection option has been added to the report to allow the library to specify the number of copies to be selected when the report runs. All items will be selected based on hold policies and the report will select copies from different libraries. Place Hold Button Displays on Hit List It is now possible to display a Place Hold button on the brief hit list retrieved by a search in the e- Library. This time-saving feature will allow users to place a hold on a title without having to view its Full Details. Place Hold Button Displays Only when No Items Are Available It is now possible to choose only to display a Hold button or Hold link for users to place holds when a title has no available copies. This feature is convenient for sites that do not allow holds to be placed on items that are on the shelf, so that library users will not attempt to place a hold on an item that is already available. Place Holds on On-order Items - WorkFlows Java Client Only Now, patrons and staff have the opportunity to place holds on on-order materials. When a hold is placed for a title on open order, Unicorn will check the library, location, and item type information represented by the holding code in the order against the Demand Management policies to determine if the hold can be placed. The hold will not be filled until a copy has been added to the title.

6 Page6 of6 PocketCirc The Sirsi PocketCirc merges the simplicity of a handheld device with online and offline circulation functionality, including the ability to use wireless connections. Using PocketCirc, staffwill be able to perform basic circulation functions such as charging items, discharging items, renewing items, marking items used, inventorying items, and creating/modifying users. The Sirsi PocketCirc device provides libraries with flexibility in that staff are no longer tied to a desk to perform circulation functions. PocketCirc also gives libraries the ability to extend services by using PocketCirc in oftline mode for bookmobiles or during network problems. Sirsi PocketCirc is a separately purchased product. Renew without Prejudice -WorkFlows Java Client Only The Renew User wizard has been enhanced to allow the library to renew all items and assign a special due date to any items that would fail to be renewed because of policy limits. If this configuration option is set, library staff can enter a special due date which will apply to the first failed renewal and all other renewals that may fail due to policy limits. This feature makes the renewal process easier for renewals done when the items are not in hand, such as phone renewals. For example, a user may request to renew all items over the phone. Using this property option the librarian can renew the items and assign any items that may have reached renewal limits a special due date instead of overriding the limit and renewing them for the full loan period. Unicorn, Hyperion Server, and Remote ibistro/ilink OPAC on Linux Previously, the Unicorn server was supported only on the Unix and Windows Server operating systems. Now, you have the option to run the Unicorn server (running Oracle version 109), the Hyperion server, and the Remote ibistro/ilink server on the Linux operating system. Support will be provided for Red Hat@Enterprise Linux, version 3. Red Hat is a North Carolina company that offers software products, services, and support. Users Can Edit Holds It is now possible to allow users to edit the Hold Expires Date, the Date Suspended and the Date Unsuspended of their existing holds from the Review My Account page in e-library and Web2.
