6 Questions or Comments Anyone? ARE CUSTOM OR COTS APPS BETTER? Where is the easy button? FLEX or Silverlight? Our data is better! How accurate does it have to be! What about security? THAT S NOT HOW WE USED TO DO IT! JavaScript or HTML5? Can we take off our blinders and get out of our comfort zone? How agile is our GIS group? If you can keep your head in all this confusion, you simply don t understand the situation!

8 Back to the Fundamentals The basic ingredients to any project * People The most difficult component because it can vary from day to day. Business people, not GIS professionals, must ultimately own and control the application. Does the business entity have a GIS savvy person on staff? How experienced? * Process If not documented, then just follow the informal. * Technology Avoid vaporware or beware of counting on the next version to make it easier. * Data What do we have? What do you need? Where do you get it? We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations. (Charles Swindol)

9 Project Management Best Practices Manage expectations (internal & external) Communicate, Communicate, Communicate Use all available tools for communications and information exchange Make meetings matter--have clear agendas, good moderation, summary notes and action items Adjust schedule/plan if necessary but clearly document and communicate no open ended, fuzzy tasks Stay focused and don t gold plate Show interim results as early as possible Celebrate and communicate accomplishments and successes
